In the tri-state area you hear these terms. In Brooklyn, it has always been hero. Why so many names? And grinders? I hear that in Connecticut..what the hell is that?

Imaging yelling at the deli guy "Meatball Parm grinder"!
And a hoagie? I hear that in Philly. Maybe the cheesesteaks are great, but that's about it. They call Italian Ices "Water Ice"!

I'm originally from Maryland, so of course I call them Subs.
I can see calling them Heros cuz it probably comes from the correct pronunciation of "gyro".
Hoagie and Grinder people are obviously freaks.

Here in Connecticut we just call it a wedge...but in upstate ct they're influenced by the Massholes, so they say wicked and call them hoagies and grinders and shit.

There was a great sub shop in the town I grew up in called "Hoagie's Heroes". I thought that was a cool name for a grinder place.

I grew up on Long Island and
we called them heros.
I went to school at Fordham in
DA BRONX and there was this
little sandwich shop called
"Little Shop of Heros" in the
Italian neighborhood across
the street.

Hmmm it depends. When I get a big cold sandwich it is a sub. When I get something that is hot though it is a hero. Ie...chicken parm HERO, etc...
Im over here now!!

In Northern NJ they're called "Heroes", almost exclusively. Of course, Subway is everywhere now, pretty much killing my whole point....but HERE'S something funny-when I lived in Minnesota 25 years ago, meat sandwiches were called "Pasties". For all I know, they still are-but somehow, I hope they're not. Just doesn't seem right, now does it?

I moved to CT in April and they call them Grinders - I used to live on Strong Island and they were Heroes. Grinder sounds like somebody just pinched the thing out of their Ass - I hate that term!
Like there's a guy in the back with that shitting tense look on his face, "one ggggrrrriiinndeer...(POP!)...aaaahhhh...comin' up!"
I think we should refer to Turds as Grinders and Heroes...well....as Heroes

I remember being in another state, and asking for a Hero, and being corrected. What the FUCK is a WEDGE?????? I'll wedge this thing up your ass!And a friend I knew from Phili introduced me to Grinders. But what sense does that make?
Now I'm Starving! Gotta go to Blimpie!!

They called them wedges in the Bronx and Westchester as well. Wedge and hero where interchangable. Sub was something you got from a chain place, like Subway ( aptly named ) or Blimpies. Grinder and Hoagie are obviuosly regional ( possibly New England and Philly respectively ) and did get a reference in Adam Sandler's " Lunch Lady " with the line " Hoagies and Gringders, Hoagies and Grinders , navy bean, navy bean ...... "
Went to college in Louisiana and they pretty much knew what a hero was, but their regional name for a sandwhich was a " Po'boy ". Anybody who's been to Mardi Gras or New Orleans would know that term. Its basically a hero, wedge, sub, etc ....
A Muffulata though is kinda like an Italian Combo on a big round roll ( the ones used for bread bowls with soup ) with a dressing of like an olive relish and ham, salami, and pepperoni.
I have balls !!!

In Buffalo, the big sandwich is "Beef on Weck". They are so proud of this and their damn chicken wings!
