Damn country-drinkin'!!!
Maybe they'll pull a Ryan Adams and put out a full-length of sonic ASS and then save the good stuff for a pair of EP's...I seem to recall THAT debacle began after Adams' last album was "pushed back"...

if you're familiar with soulseek, the album available for download ....
i'm a little conflicted over the album, you can feel the absence of jay bennett, and the dominance of jim o'rourke's influence/presence .... at times, it feels more like a follow-up to the loose fur album (which i loved) rather than 'yankee hotel foxtrot'
i realize bands evolve in to new sounds, but i'm not sure i care for wilco's new direction .... with bennett tweedy crafted wondeful songs with a rich range of style, it would appear that a little o'rourke goes a long way into quirky tunings and dissonance (his work with sonic youth a better fit)
there are some wonderful songs on the new album, maybe two great ones and a few that seem miscalculated (the 8 minutes of noise that follows the three minutes of beauty of the late greats)
there are times when the album sounds like a great neil young record from 1975, it often sounds too much like loose fur, but it rarely sounds like a wilco record

I always thought O'Rourke had a great "alterna-pop" type of sound.
His solo album was fantastic.

i love o'rourke's work: i think sonic youth is even better with him as a member -- 'murray street' is just a brilliant record; the non-experimental albums are great (just for the cover art alone) and 'insignificance' is one of my favorite records, but, as a wilco fan, 'a ghost is born,' feels a bit off ....
i've listened to it for the last two weeks, it's a damn good record, but a bit of a letdown as a wilco fan ....

I feel the same way about Ryan Adams AND Wilco...not enough of the ol' alt-country "twang." Both acts have almost totally crossed over to the "alternative rock/pop" world, and I can't help but long for the olden days with each new album...but I've accepted it with Wilco. "Summer Teeth" converted me to the "new" sound, big time. Adams and the only other two semi-permanent memebers of Whiskeytown (I think the fiddler and her husband, the drummer) have talked about kindasortamyabe getting together and putting out another Whiskeytown album...and then keeping it going as a sort of "second job" and putting out Whiskeytown albums every 3 or 4 years...so there's hope for ol' Ryan yet.

Can somebody help me out with this band? I have no idea what kind of music they are, but they were at this festival I went to this summer and the other day I decided to download one of their recent live shows (9-3-04). I haven't burned it onto disc yet so I haven't given it a listen, but it's a band that I keep hearing about so I wanted to try and expand my musical horizons so to speak. What kind of music are they? Seriously, are they any good? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Can somebody help me out with this band?
a.m., their first record was a sweet, almost innocent collection of alt-country gems ...
being there is a more of a transitional record with more stones influence than willie nelson ...
summerteeth is a series of dark lyrics wrapped around lush, quirky pop jangles ...
yhf is a brilliant collection of songs with a more muted feel ... much as been made over the production and blallyhoo, but there are simple, beautiful song on that record ...
agib tries to copy yhf and falls short and comes off a bit amatuerish but after listening to it a couple dozen times, it's beginning to grow on me ...
mermaid ave are two collections of amazing song put to unpublished woody guthrie lyrics ...
from the show you downloaded, the following are essential:
tweedy has used each record to carve out his own sound, and after the nth lineup change, the current crew is a more 'jam'/'experimental' type band in the vein of sonic youth and jim o'rourke ...
At Least That's What You Said / Via Chicago / I Am Trying To Break Your Heart / A Shot In The Arm / Jesus, Etc. / Heavy Metal Drummer / Theologians / I'm The Man Who Loves You / Poor Places / Sunken Treasure / The Late Greats / War On War / Christ For President / Be Not So Fearful
other songs to look out for:
passenger side, pick up the change, casino queen, misunderstood, the lonely 1, dreamer in your dreams, she's a jar, nothingsgonna..., reservations, not for the seasons, hoodoo voodoo, california stars, one by one, secrets of the sea, airline to heaven, remember the mountainbed, please tell my brother ...

I actually hated alot of the new Incubus stuff. That was more of a joke. Honestly, the only thing I've heard of Wilco is the stuff ESD played on the show, and It was ok but i was a big fan<br />
