View Full Version : Cheap Trick is the most overrated band ever.

I'm following suit with blakjeesis' Beastie Boys' thread in regards to "threads that seem woefully out of place and time."
Anyone here have VH1 Classic? What a great channel. Nothing but videos and performance clips from a window that's roughly 1963-1989. Unfortunately, amongst all this awesomeness, lies about half a dozen Cheap Trick videos every goddamn day.
Now, I love "I Want You To Want Me." It may be the catchiest, greatest pop song ever put to wax. But everything, literally, EVERYTHING else they've done? Sheer sonic awfulness. These guys didn't find a shitty musical genre in the 70's and 80's that wasn't already awful that they didn't think they could take to even more horrible depths. Why is this band somewhat legendary? They're a fucking joke.
There's plenty of old people on this board who maybe can clear this up. Someone explain to me, if possible, why the public hasn't laughed Cheap Trick off of the planet?

But that is about it.

As I recall, other than the occasional fluke 80s hit, everybody pretty much stopped caring about Cheap Trick around 1978.

Oh, yeah -- as far as the "legendary" part, I never really got it. I always took it to come from the alt-rockers from the early 90s (like Billy Corgan) giving major support to the cheese-rock that influenced them during their formative years.

I agree Mojo, VH1 Classic is fucking awesome. I watched it dumbfounded the other night when they played one of my faves from the 80's..."Six Months in a Leaky Boat" by Split Enz. I love watching that channel.
Regarding Cheap Trick? My only explanation is that they are a Midwest band, and Midwesterners are passionate to the point of obsession (much like Boston people) with bands, be they good or bad, that come from their neck of the woods.

I disagree. There are bands that are much more overrated than Cheap Trick, but you're right, other than I Want You to Want Me, they suck rocks.

Pah. Mojo made his point. Time to derail...
First of all Rat, you never let on how much you like a girl. "Oh, Debbie. Hi." Two, you always call the shots. "Kiss me. You won't regret it." Now three, act like wherever you are, that's the place to be. "Isn't this great?" Four, when ordering food, you find out what she wants, then order for the both of you. It's a classy move. "Now, the lady will have the linguini and white clam sauce, and a Coke with no ice." And five, now this is the most important, Rat. When it comes down to making out, whenever possible, put on side one of Led Zeppelin IV.

Us old timers like them because of integrity. They were who they were and never strayed from that. They still have the same line-up (Rick Nielsen is considered a phenomenal guitar player). In the late 70s there was god-awful AOR or disco. Cheap Trick was low-profile and "pop" without being bubble gum.
Mojo, I know you're going to choke on this, but they're up there with The Replacements.

PSHAW!
I know TOO much about this goddamned band, because they rank up there as one of my Dad's favorite bands, so I've probably heard more of them against my will than the average fan.
AWFUL. AWFULAWFULAWFULAWFULAWFUL.
Like I said, "I Want You To Want Me"? Possibly the greatest song ever. Definitely the greatest power pop song ever. But everything else sounds like a band that has no idea what they want to sound like, so they co-opt EVERYTHING that's ever used a guitar, and made them all equally shitty and lame.
The Replacements and them don't even live in the same UNIVERSE, much less the same planet.

Bah. Nonsense. I own and love several hundred "classic rock"-era albums (ie-anything before 1980). I just can't stand Cheap Trick. Or any of those other bands above (Except for my beloved The Police, and Deep Purple is decent, though their "greatness" is based on TWO fucking songs). I listen to literally every modern genre under the sun. Some may say snobbery...I simply say taste. I appreciate my ears, and don't wish to sonically rape them with aural ass. How you figure anyone that hates bloated, empty dinosaur rock as only liking "tortured, pale, whiny vegans?" I want some SNAP to my music, some fucking SPINE. Those bands above are pretty fuckin' pussy when you get down to it.

It might have been intentional. If you remember, the character who was trying to follow the "rules" in the movie, Mark Ratner, wasn't exactly the most smooth guy ever.
As I've stated before, due to a lack of funds in college, this was one of the only two movies my roommates and I owned, and I bet I've seen it 50-60 times. Hence I tend to focus too much on it.

I believe the reason that he says that and they play something else is that Cameron couldn't get the rights to Zep 4. He was friends with the band after covering them for Rolling Stone.
It's very rare for Plant and Page to allow people to license any of their music. There's only about 3 or 4 movies to have Zep songs in them (covers don't count, nor do concert films). They still wouldn't let Cameron use Stairway in Almost Famous, but the scene is in the deleted scenes on the dvd.

O.K. i think it's safe to say that Cheap Trick is not in the rock god status of Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple, but they had their moment of success with their debut LP "Live at BudoKan" and some moderate hits in the 1980's and would've faded away by now, but and i repeat BUT!!!! The most overrated band in my opinion is U2 UGH!!!!!! I've had enough of Bono's holier than thou preaching about the state of the world. He barely lifts a finger about things that happen only a few miles away from his home in Dublin since he cares sooooooooo much about the AIDS situation in africa.
