I find it difficult to believe, but I checked the past year and no one had posted this. Forgive me if I missed it. This is for main characters only. The Niles Cranes, Dan Connors, Meatheads and Rev. Jim Ignatowskis of the world have their places too, just not here. Also, there's no one here from shows like News Radio or Cheers because of the ensemble nature of the shows there's really no standouts. Seinfeld is different because although an ensemble cast, all 4 were individual main characters. So without further blustering:
10. Arthur Fonzarelli
9. Roseanne Connor
8. George Costanza
7. Homer Simpson
6. Cosmo Kramer
5. Alex P. Keaton
4. Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce
3. Lucy Ricardo
2. Ralph Cramden
1. Archie Bunker

10. Ray Barone
9. Joey Tribiani
8. Doug Heffernan
7. Al Bundy
6. Alex P. Keaton
5. Jerry Seinfeld
4. Eric Cartman
3. George Costanza
2. Archie Bunker
1. Homer Simpson
I agree, Ralph Cramden belongs somewhere on the list, but I am not that familiar with the honeymooners. As for Lucy and MASH, never liked either one of them. I would have liked to include students from Welcome Back Kotter (damn funny show), but they were all really supporting characters.

Alright, to respond:
Al Bundy - A huge oversight on my part. Bump The Fonz, Al slides into #5 between Keaton and Hawkeye.
Eric Cartman - Another good one, but I don't think he makes top 10.
Joey Tribiani - Tripped up by the ensemble curse, and if I was going to pic one Friend it would be Chandler.
Ray Barone, Doug Heffernan - NO!
Jerry Seinfeld - Arguably the 3rd, 4th or 5th best character on the show. Not on my list, buddy.
Cant forget Jack Tripper
Yes, I can.
Arnold Jackson - Better than anyone else on my amended list? I really don't think so.
Phil Hartman - I'm not trying to short him here. He was fantastic on News Radio, but once again the ensemble was terrific. And it's kind of like Sean Penn's Oscar, he deserves recognition for previous work and it would be an aggregate award. No doubt he was a better comedic actor than a lot of people on my Top 10, but this list isn't for great acting, it's for great characters. I'm afraid he just doesn't beat any of the others out.
Dan Fielding - I would argue that he wasn't the main character in the show. He was great, but Judge Stone really was the center of it all.
Bob Hartley - Tough to argue.
Oscar Madison? No. Felix Unger? Yes.
Maxwell Smart - Maybe Top 20, not Top 10.
Larry David - Has potential, so does Cheryl, but hasn't been around long enough.
Larry Sanders - Another huuuuuge oversight. Might even be Top 3.
Ed Norton - Supporting character, just like Alice and Trixie. They made it good, but Ralph was the show.
The Kingfish? From Amos 'n' Andy? That Kingfish? Are you serious?
i didn't know her last name
So because there are so many other Roseannes that could be on the list, you didn't know which one I was talking about. Simple mistake.

Are you kidding me, if you can put Kramer or George Castanza as leading men then without a doubt Ed Norton would be in the top 2 or 3 of any list.
Have you ever watched an episode of "Amos and Andy". I would put that show right up there with "The Honeymooners" as one of the funniest shows of all time. The Kingfish was the star of that show.

I disagree. You could have an episode of Seinfeld without Jerry or Elaine, just the 'George and Kramer Show', and it wouldn't suffer. Just as it wouldn't suffer as the 'Jerry and Elaine Show', or any other combination thereof. That's what I meant when I said an ensemble of 4 main characters. Plus, the show was more writing than character driven.
The Honeymooners, on the other hand, was pretty much all character driven. It was the same basic story every episode: Ralph has a scheme backfire or some kind of misunderstanding and hilarity ensues. Without him it just wouldn't have been The Honeymooners. No question, Norton was a wonderful character, an original, a prototype, and masterfully crafted by the late, great Art Carney, but he wasn't the lead. He might very well be the number one supporting character ever, but that's for another thread.
And as far as Amos 'n' Andy go, no, I can't say I've ever seen it so I can't judge The Kingfish.

Basil Fawlty is a GREAT call. I didn't even think of him because, at least to me, he falls into the English sitcom category. There's a shitload of great characters over there that very few people over here would recognize, so I didn't include them. Since Fawlty Towers has played on TV over here, he should absolutely be included on the list.
George Jefferson - A black Archie Bunker. Funny, but not original enough to hit Top 10.
Fred Sanford - I dunno, I hemmed and hawed over this one myself. I just don't feel him enough. I love Redd Foxx, but I think this lines up with Phil Hartman.
