View Full Version : Metro Card Question

Hopefully this wont sound too stupid, but here goes...
I have an old metro card that had a few rides left on it from 2 years ago. The card says "expires June 2002" or something like that. Now, I paid money for those rides, is there a way there could be money still on the card that I could use, even though it says its expires in the past? Is there such a thing as a "reader" that can tell me how much of a balance there might be? I rarely use the thing, but before I saw the expiration, I assumed it was still good, is it?

I'm 99% sure it's no good. Why the hell did you let that happen? If you weren't going to use those rides any time soon, why pay for them?

I changed jobs while I had it and didnt need it, I didnt know it would expire, I guess I thought it was like a EZ Pass. Im thinking it might have had like 8 bucks on it or something, I just tucked it in my wallet and forgot about it until today, when I stated a new job that requires I take a train, and I thought Id save a few bucks.

See, when something expires, it means it's no longer valid.
I exposed a bottle of hairspray to temperatures above 120 degrees fahrenheit. Is that bad?

Well, I have this carton of milk dated for last month, but I have been saving it because there are two sips left. Do you think it is OK to drink??

I still have my goldfish in the little transport baggies that the pet store put them in when I bought them. Will they be alright?

as everyone is pointing out, i'm sure that it won't work anymore when you swipe it. the metrocard people might do something for you if you send them the card (like putting iton a new card or something), but i don't know if it's worth the hassle. plus, you did let the thing expire.
i had to deal with the metrocard people once, when the machine ate my money, and i was shocked when they were actually helpful. a couple of weeks later, i got a metrocard in the mail with my money on it.

Thanks for the help. Why do they get away with an expiration date anyway? I have money on my ez pass that I put in there 5 years ago that still there. Sounds like a scam to me, because I only intend to use the card when its pouring out, if I dont want to walk the 13 blocks to the building. So, If I buy a $20 card and keep it as a "back up", its a waste, because the odds are that I wont use the card before its expiration. Its bullshit, because I paid for it, why do they keep it while ez pass doesnt?

Because EZ pass isn't a flimsy little magnetically coded card that's easily bent or demagnetized???????
If you just want a metrocard as backup and you're not going to use $20 in 2 years, well, you figure that either you shuold have bought the $10 one or that $20 was a good investment against rain.

The card is too old to be transfered on a new card at a token booth or a vending machine. An expired card is only able to be transfered on to a new card for up to a year after the expiration date. You'll have to take the card to 370 Jay Street in downtown Brooklyn. Or you can request a return envelope to send out the card at a token booth.

The good news, that's only 2 blocks from Junior's, home of some incredible cheesecake. I do a lot of buisness with the people at the MTA, and they seem very nice in that office.
And I guess you never noticed your credit cards have expiration dates either, huh? The technology just isn't there to let them last longer.

Jay Street? Im working on Jay Steet now! How cool is that?
And you people who keep bringing up the coupons and milk, I get your point, but your missing mine. I see what your saying about if I had bought milk and didnt drink it and it went bad, that would be my mistake. But I bought the card with the intent of using it, and would have eventually. If the card has a stripe on it that holds some data that tells the machines how much you have left on it and wont allow admittance if you run out of the balance, why cant it simply hold my balance for me? Is the MTA banking on it that people who buy them might not actually use it up in its alloted time? I can see if the card was damaged or lost or whatever, it not being their fault. When I bought the card, they got my money right away. What does it cost them if the card didnt expire? Its more a question of whats right and wrong then the money I lost. To me, its like if I had a savings account in a bank that I didnt frequent and I decide to stop in one day and they tell me the moneys gone because I didnt make deposits and withdrawals for over a year.

Oh, and Juniors Cheesecake. I tried it and its good, but I have had better. My parents use to get cheesecake in the flea market that was off the hook!
Last night we stopped off on the way home at this place called Roll n Roaster in Sheepshead Bay. Awesome roast beef sandwhich! Anyone ever try it?
