Dances With Wolves - Unamerican?

As I have all the time with some friends, a movie discussion was keeping our conversation moving when Dances With Wolves came up. The original point I was making had been forgotten because two friends claimed that the movie was "Un-American" or "Anti-American".

I and a few others called crap on them and agreed that it was simply the story of a man who "turned injin" and decided to live the life of an Indian. The soldiers who came to get him were not a portrayal of "America", but simply doing their duty as it was at the time.

I never heard of it labeled as Anti-American and totally disagree, but has anyone else heard of it labeled that way?

I've only heard references to it being "long-winded" and "boring".

I've never actually seen it. I prefer Costner's work in "The Postman" and "Waterworld". His views of post-apocalyptic society are absolutely hilarious!

I don't understand why people label movies and books as anti-something just because they portray unpopular events. I mean, Dances With Wolves portrays how shitty the US treated the Indians, but that doesn't mean it's anti-American. It happened. For better or for worse, the US treated the Indians unfairly. I don't like it but I still love my country and I'll bet Costner does too.

Same thing with The Passion of the Christ. It portrays how Jesus was tortured and killed by the Jews. It happened. Period. But that doesn't make it anti-semitic. I don't hate Jews because of it or because of the movie. And I'm sure Mel Gibson doesn't want people to hate Jews because of his movie although, maybe his father does...

Debate and discussion are healthy. But people on this planet need to lighten up.

Thats true. It portrayed the Cavalry in a pretty bad light, they weren't all bad, they did some pretty sketchy things, but they were never that bad. Custer rode into the Cheyenne camp on the Washita, but i don't recall them murdering any civillians or anything like that in that operation(although im sure it did happen, just as the indians themselves killed white civillians), in fact they got their behinds handed to them there and had to get out of there quick, he left an entire troop there with Major Elliott...

The worst atrocity against the Indians I can think of was the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 against Black Kettle's Cheyenne, and that was done by JM Chivington and the Colorado State Militia(although Chivington had an Army commission, once word got out about Sand Creek, he was cashiered pretty quick or he quit..one of the two)

If you've ever read about the Sand Creek Massacre, and there's a pretty good account of it in Dee Brown's "Bury My heart at Wounded knee", its one of the most horrible things I've ever read about....
