That doesn't mean I don't like them. I'm not their biggest fan in the world; a lot of their stuff is good, some of it's real good, especially the later work. Musically, they experiment, I like that. The content of their lyrics is interesting, I like that too. But the rhyming itself, their rhythms, their patterns, and their 'flow', if you will, are very, very basic:
bum ba bum ba bum bum bum
bum ba bum ba bum bum bum

I don't know if this is a criticism or just an observation really. The music certainly doen't suffer because of it, in fact I suppose it does lend a certain charm, a signature style, to it.

Edit: And I think sometimes they just make things up to fill in an empty line. For example, "I like my sugar with coffee and cream."

Edit 2: Of course the worst offense of this nature ever is at the end of Wu-Tang's Can it be All So Simple: "Sunsine plays a major part in the daytime. Peace to mankind, GhostFace carry a black nine, niggah." I love the Wu, but that's so bad it's laughable.

Where were you and this thread ten years ago, Detective Kojak Mannix Batman? It seems the two of you got lost.

And like you said, they have a basic style, but it is "their" style. If they suddenly dropped something different, they just wouldn't be them. I don't think anyone's expecting the rebirth of Rakim out of these three yutzes.

Besides, I always looked at the lyrics as secondary to the bitchin' sonic collage they layer each album with.

Of course the can't rap, they have musical talent.

A good way to threaten somebody is to light a stick of dynamite. Then you call the guy and hold the burning fuse up to the phone. "Hear that?" you say. "That's dynamite, baby."

"I said ooh my my and thank you ma'am". What place does this have in a song? About as much place as "I got more rhymes than Phyllis Diller", I guess. Both lines make me cringe when I hear them, along with many others. Their lyrics are horrible. I've pretty much gotten over it. To this day I can't even explain why I love them so much. If I heard them for the first time today I'd probably think they suck.

Great website; and it shows what a genius producer can do. My opinion, but Paul's Boutique is just the most amazing album. It's a cohesive whole, a wall of samples that are blatant and used to perfection. Total rip-off of samples or tribute or whatever, I think this album fucking smokes.

And it's so easy to Monday Morning QB these things, but having been old enough to remember, this then rap/hip-hop Hater saw what happened with the release of Licensed to Ill. For better or worse, it changed everything; and spawned a bazillion wannabes. Get past the hits on the album.

And if you don't think 95% of major label/producer albums released today by bands of *any* genre are filled, i mean Filled with Samples of old kicks, snares, synth and organ tones, well...

They share song writing contributions on alot of their stuff. So who knows how much they actually write. Plus, their lyrics are real juvenile.

ie. "I went into the locker room during classes. I went into your locker and I smashed your glasses"

"I'll steal your money like I stole your bike"

But I guess they rap about their experiences, and it would sound funny for 3 Jewish white boys to rap about living in the hood.

What do you expect, they are the Beastie Boys. If they were the Beastie Men, then they could rap about adult things, like cubicles and car loans or something.

Um, what more can I say than 'don't listen to the radio'. Ludacris' orginality is layed across his albums. His lyrics are by no means simple unless they're on a dumb club song. Nelly and the St. Lunatics don't count in my book as they're more talentless jips that stay alive in mainstream Rap as they're so commercial and marketed that every white teen (sorry, i had to be truthful) buys their albums. That's the same for most rappers frequently played on your radio dial. Now, being the oversensative emcee that I am, I suggest to look to guys like Mos Def, Talib, Nas, and actually LISTEN to Eminem's album if you want good stuff from people you're familar with. If you want agressive heavy hittin' stuff from guys with wordplay that'll leave you speechless, and you're not afraid to try and listen to someone you don't know of, try Diabolic, Copywrite, Q Unique, Juice, Pumpkin Head, Session, and Vast Aire.

if you are honestly going to look for good lyricists you can't only look at main stream shit. by far, i would say the #1 hip hop artist out there is doseone. who's doseone, you might ask. exactly.

his shit is so out there, major labels on't even touch him. furthermore, he puts oput a lot of stuff that is so experimental that even "heads" question it. but, when it all comes down to it, you will never find another lyricist who can freestyle/ battle like him.

while most people will spit writtens, he goes comepletely of the top, always.
