If so, surely it creamed "The Passion."

Wed opening stats (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/days/?page=wed&p=.htm)

Spiderman opened on a Friday (making it's numbers more impressive as Peter didn't have extra days to make his $114 million in a weekend) and is the biggest one day ever, domestic

Passion isn't the biggest Wed ever, but only Starwars, Matrix and Lord of the rings did better.

He was a "sexy" actor who became a director.

There's not much that Hollywood likes more than sucking its own dick.

See Matt Damon and Ben Affleck winning the Best Screenplay Oscar for "Good Will Hunting."

Or Opie Cunningham winning Best Director for "A Beautiful Mind."

This is from boxofficemojo:

In just one day, The Passion has become the highest-grossing Christian-themed movie of recent memory. It's a genre that's been ghettoized as a niche market up until now - former champ Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie grossed a modest $25.6 million in its entire run.

What about the Last Temptation of Christ? I checked and it only made $8,373,585. And I guess Ben-Hur too long ago. it made $74,000,000 which Mel will beat.

I was sure that in the USA where Christianity rules, there would be more Christian-themed films. And I would say "Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie" is more Vegitable-based than Christian-based.

I'm with you as far as that goes, but I just saw it yesterday and thought it was great. It was one of the most intense powerful movies I've ever seen. The religious aspect of it was more of a secondary issue, and it certainly didn't apply to the "religious" fools running around nowadays.

This movie has to be one of the best...no, strike that...The best film that I have seen in over 20 years!!! The acting was superb, the score was perfect and the story line was pretty much how it is spelled out in the New Testament!!!! I can't praise this movie enough!!! But remember that those openings were Memorial Day weekend. This particular opening is a bigger milestone because it is at a notably different time of year. You could make the case that the competition wasn't strong, but this film brought people to the theaters who normally wouldn't see a movie on a Wednesday in February.

I may be going out on a limb here, but the fact it's a major motion picture about a guy named "Jesus" might have something to do with it all. I know it's crazy, but I just have a hunch...

I'm surprised there aren't more big money making Christian based films. The bigest one before Passion was a Computer animated film about Christian Vegitables. And THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST only made $8 million.

I guess we'll see a lot more Jesus on the big screen soon.

So maybe I'm late on this one, but I finally saw the film, just got home from it actually. As a film, it was pretty damn good. I don't buy that someone who didn't know the backstory wouldn't be able to get into it. At the very least they would get that this is a guy who thinks he's the son of God and is sacrificing himself to a horrible death. The acting was excellent, Jim Caviziel was a standout, but all the other performances were almost as great; the camera work and directing were, although not incredible, very good. The score, on the other hand, was fantastic; and the script, well the script was only what it could be.

It's tough to categorize the violence in the film. Yes it was violent, brutally so, but it wasn't the 2 hour gore fest that it was made out to be. The viscious, horrible violence really only happened in a couple of scenes, all the other bloodshed was from the continued effects of the violence. The only other scenes that have ever made me feel the way the scourging and crucifixion did were in American Psycho the book, not the movie. Yes it was brutal, yes it was gorey, but I'm having trouble with the 'violent' label. Maybe because not a single attack or drop of blood was gratuitous, and I'm just not used to it. I don't know.

After all this, the real question is,"So what?" That's what I walked out of the the theatre saying to myself. I don't mean that in a blasphemous or sacreligious way. I'm speaking from the viewpoint of someone who knows this story inside and out, someone who's spent a great deal of time studying it. I've read the truths and The Truths. I know the fables and the myths. I've studied secular and non-secular papers on it. I've read confirmations and denials. For an amateur, I'm not an academic and I'm not clergy, I would say I'm somewhat more knowledgeable on the subject than the average man on the street. Other than the ultra realistic depictions of the punishments, there was nothing new in the film. I get the same message from Jesus Christ Superstar. There was no great surge of spirituality that a lot of other people have claimed to feel. It's basically a remake of the same movie I've seen before. It's Psycho; it's Cape Fear; it's King Kong.

Edit: I did feel a surge, but it wasn't spiritual. It had more to do with spending half the movie thinking about dropping a nut on Monica Bellucci's chin.

Gibson put John Woo to shame with the ridiculous amounts of slow-motion he stuck in to "The Passion."

I think if everything ran at normal film speeds, the movie would have been half an hour shorter.

It's fake, this was on Fark last week, But I should hope some kids did it since then. I would if I had a Devil Costume, I just have a Stormtrooper costume, not as funny...
