View Full Version : Lent - What Are You Giving Up This Year?

Or do you even give up anything for Lent?
The last time I did this was about 5 years ago, and I gave up soda, which was one of the toughest ones for me. Before that I tried red meat, and only stayed on it because my girlfriend at the time was a real ball buster.
This year, I don't know what I can give up because, being on Atkins, I've already given up everything already that I remotely like (20 pounds, by the way, in 45 day...not that you asked!).
The only thing I thought about was giving up rf.net, which might not be that tough starting next week when I finally go back to work (31 days sitting on my ass waiting for them to clear the contract, by the way...not that you asked!) and I take on 2 new other contracts (sure Ron will miss the thesis after thesis).
Anyway, can't quite figure out what to do, or if I should even do it, but I do feel that it's time for a cool change...oh wait...that wasn't me...that was The Little River Band.
So, what about any of you maniacs? Does Lent actually mean anything more than a second chance to get your New Years Resolutions back on track?

I've never given anything up on Lent, but maybe this year I'll give up getting takeout or eating fatty foods and stuff. If that works, I'll keep it up, and see what happens from there.

Why would anyone in their right mind give anything up for Lent? What century is this again?

Americans are really big on co-opting other cultures or beliefs and trying to make it their own. You hear it all the time in the way we describe stuff - anything that is considered the center for a movement, is often referred to as "Mecca" ("San Francisco is Mecca for gays") and we throw around the word "Karma" without any realization of what it really means (Karma effects you in the NEXT life, not this one - if you do something bad, you won't be punished for that until the NEXT life - any good or bad karma you are getting now is a reflection of the previous life).
Same thing with Mardi Gras; morons gladly go out and get trashed and go nuts (we love creating drinking holidays in this country) up to "Fat Tuesday," and then not have any concept of what the next day is suppose to mean or represent.
(This could easily get me back off track with my irriation with flag wavers who scream at people for being un-Patriot, but they, themselves, don't even know the flag code)
Why would anyone in their right mind give anything up for Lent?
Same reason Muslims fast during Ramadon - faith in their religion.
Those that don't choose to do it for religious reasons like to take this moment every year to take stock of their lives and see what kind of discipline they have, and if they can do or learn anything that will make them better people. Sure, they could choose to do it any other day or time, and who is to say they don't, but anyone on a diet (for example) will tell you, it's easier to do it with a friends.
What century is this again?
Something like 20 or 21 centuries since the birth of Jesus.
