Can we review movies here if we dont give spoilers?

Recently I saw, in order:

1. Big Fish: Definately go see it Tim Burton nailed it.

2. Monster: Definately go see it unless you dislike violence, but go anyway to watch theron.

3. 50 First Dates: OK, the real reason I made this thread. I'm sorry, but for me, it was a Shit Sandwich. It's a romantic comedy; which starts as comedy, with some kick ass Sandler bits, but ends as sorts kinda really bad romance. Really really bad. Huge movie pill bad.

4. Lost In Translation: Sadder then I thought it was gonna be, but Murray nails ennui. Who woulda thought the chick who fucked over Godfather 3 would give us this gem of dialouge over CGI?

Discuss those and others, unless we can't, and no spoilers dammit.

Big fish is possibly one of the best movies I've ever seen.

And Mike, is 50 first dates a good movie to take a girl too on a date?

Oh yeah. Hey, it's a good romantic comedy, but for me, those are for exactly that, dates. Fine.

From the trailers I saw I was expecting more of the Gilmore-type Sandler movie. I guess this is the way to do Wedding Singer 2, but it's just a weird premise that doesn't work, which sucks because Sandler rocks, and Drew Barrymore gets better looking every day. The preceding sentence will be quoted and ripped to shreads by some, but hey...

I swear to christ I took a first date to See 'The Elephant Man'. Wow.

Both MONSTER and LOST IN TRANSLATION stuck with me for quite a while after seeing them both. Charleze may never do something as brilliant as that ever, ever again.

LOST IN TRANSLATION is such a special film. Scarlett Johanson is outstanding, and deserved a nomination. She and Bill Murray are perfect in this film - you can't imagine either of them not being in it.

is 50 first dates a good movie to take a girl too on a date?

LOST IN TRANSLATION is maybe the worst movie to take a girl that is just a friend that you want to convince to be more, because she will come away feeling justified that not all male/female relationships have to be about sex.

Who woulda thought the chick who fucked over Godfather 3 would give us this gem of dialouge over CGI?

Ahhhh...you didn't see THE VIRGIN SUICIDES did you? Go rent it! And, to be fair, it was her father ruined GODFATHER 3. Not only with casting of his untalented daughter (not her fault she sucked - she wasn't an actress), but for oh-so-many other reasons too. You put Winonna Ryder back in there (I think she was originally cast in that role, actually, and something happened at the last minute, and that's why Sophia got the role), and the film still stinks on ice.

Ahhh yes, that's it. My memory aint what it used to...ummm...

Not a big fan of the Virgin Suicides, but point taken.

I guess I gotta see Mystic River; but what I really wanna see is the mountain climbing movie out now 'vertical limit' [?] or something. Climbers say it's the best real, true climbing movie [and a horrific true story] since, believe it or not, The Eiger Sanction. Weird lot, those climbers, but my younger bro was deep in their set, Beck Weathers deep, and this movie supposedly kicks ass.

Oh, and the trailers:

New movie coming out with Tuturro and Depp as a writer and some freak after him. Looks terrible when the sound FX are the major part of the trailer.

And there's a new movie out, another twist on the 'Big' genre, only female. Some 13 year old-ish chick waked up one morning with the bod of a hot mid-20s babe. I'm sure I'm way off on the dates. Anyway, why bother? It looks bad.

I was trying to think how many 'Big' type movies there actually are, where kids and grown-ups swich bodies, or variations: So far

Big.
Freak Friday [not sure on this one, anyone?]
The Movie with Judge Reinhold and what his name
The Dudley Moore/ Kirk Cameron one.
The George Burns / Gay guy Shit Sandwich.

Any others I'm missing here?

That piece of crap where Robin Williams is a kid who gets old quick count?

Mizzle, Mizzle, Mizzle...IMDB is just a click a way, my brother! haha!

Yeah, I saw the trailer for that one movie,13 GOING ON 30 , which really is a gender reversal version of BIG. Parts of it seemed kind of cute, for that kind of movie - what teenage boy is not going to like the scene when Jennifer Gardner, who is really hot in the preview, try to pick up a 14 year old boy. It's going to be HA-UGE.

FREAKY FRIDAY - was the original one of these movies; back in the 1970s with Jodie Foster. Kind of a cute movie and neat premise. It was remade last year with Jamie Lee Curtis as the mother, and from what I heard it was actually pretty good.

BIG - one of the most overrated movies of all time; right up there with Ferris Bueller in my opinion. I really hated BIG.

VICE VERSA - Is the one with Judge Reinhold and Fred Savage - the kid from "The Wonder Years." For this genre, it's kind of a cute kids movie.

LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON - Kirk Cameron and Dudley Moore; horrible, horrible, horrible movie.

18 AGAIN! - is the one with George Burns and the gay guy, David Watson. Really is a piece of shit.

JACK - The Robin Williams movie I suppose counts, but it is so maudaline and depressing

My favorite one of these stories, however, was a Saturday morning live action kids television show called "Big John/Little John" that aired in the 70s. It was about a man who finds the fountain of youth, drinks from it, and then from time to time he shrinks to a 12 year old boy, and then later grows up again. To cover this up from everyone, he pretends to have a 12 year old nephew, also named John, who moved in with him. The boy in the show was Robbie Rist, who is best known as the kid that ruined "The Brady Bunch" - Cousin Oliver.

I'm trying to think of a time before the orignial FREAKY FRIDAY to see if this kind of story has ever been told before, but I'm drawing a blank. Before the 1970s, kids were not viewed in movies as being wiser than adults (which is the delfacto rule of thumb with all John Hughes movies, and all family films these days). The idea that an adult had to go become a child again to see how tough children have it is a pretty modern concept.

These stories play into children's dreams of growing up, and adults dreams of holding onto childhood.

Haven't seen this one in years but I remember liking it because I've always loved George Burns and the kid actually did a really good Burns impression.

I didn't see this because I've always loved Robin Williams, and don't want his shit movies to ruin that.

This looks promising and risky at the same time. "Secret Window" is directed by a guy who's written some scripts, and I like the idea of a director with writing skills. It bodes well for a guy who knows how to tell a story. But the story is written by Stephen King, which has been a curse more than a blessing in movies. Turturro and Depp are both brilliant actors, of course. I'm interested.

Turturro's got another directing stint in the works now: "Romance & Cigarettes." I loved his first film, "Illuminata," about a theater company, even though I hate the theater. This one's a musical and has almost the same cast, so it doesn't look too much different from the other one. We'll see if Turturro can pull off the same thing twice. The cast has Susan Sarandon, James Gandolfini, Christopher Walken, Kate Winslet, Steve Buscemi, and some other luminaries of the New York theater scene that were so good in "Illuminata." I'm looking forward to this one.

New Coen Brothers movie due out in March, I think, with Tom Hanks and Marlin Wayans, but without the usal Coen stable of actors like Buscemi, Turturo, Francis McDormont, etc. Hanks and the Coens seem like a really good combination, and the worst the Coens have done is a "good-but-not-great" movie, so I can't help but want to see this one on opening day.

So...you saying that your brain failed the test then? heh-heh

I love IMDB - it settles most bets. That said, I only had to use it twice in my last response; I confused LIKE FATHER LIKE SON with 18 AGAIN.

Odd that this comes up in thread where people were rightfully bashing Coppola for "Godfather 3"...and then bring up THIS film of his, one of (If not the) last ones he directed, and capped off what was probably the biggest fall from grace (Creatively and respect-wise) for one of the biggest of the maverick 70's filmmakers.

Exactly. What i really mean is if i'm posting it's train of thought, and if i'm thinking of the list of movies, i will forget half if i stop writing, so i just write, and leave the goggle-ing to others. Which rocks.

and thats why my posts are way too long.
