Even if this move still didn't make them the best team in the league, on paper, this might be the one that makes the rest of the league throw up their collective hands in disgust & say "we quit, you don't play fair!"
But I still can't see it happening...I think Eric Duncan will be the Yankee 3rd baseman by July.

Of course they would. Is money really an object to Steinbrenner? I swear he must piss away more cash than urine in a year.
"we quit, you don't play fair!"
Ok, I'll say it too. You don't play fair. Yadda uadda small markets have a hard time competing, blah blah blah. It's all been said before. But now that I think about it, you still have to play 162 gamnes a season and nothing is guaranteeing you will be a winner and make the play offs. You can buy all the players and all the talent in the leauge but chemistry, teamwork and the lack of big heads in the clubhouse and a level mindset is priceless.

Yeah except both the Rangers and Mets sucked before and after they acquired those players. The Yankees are a team that was in the World Series 2 out of the last 3 years. Not to mention that A-Rod is undountably(sp?) the best player in baseball.
If Arod were to come to the Yankees and hit like 12 HRs and drive in 23 in just 46 games, you would still have Jeter, Giambi, Sheffield, Matsui.etc...
And anyway how can u compare Alex Rodriguez to Mo Vaughn...I mean, really.

If he wasn't offered an extension in the first place, then he'd be a lame duck manager. And Steinbrenner has to know it would be suicide to fire Torre. And I don't think he can afford to even slightly piss of his fan base after the Pettite debacle and a monster payroll. He needs every fan in the seats he can get.
But I'm not saing there won't be clubhouse problems. If there are, it will be because guys like Sheffield and Lofton are assholes, not because Torre is a lame duck.

The Sox wanted him to restructure & wind up with slightly less money & the almighty players union would have none of that. The Yanks might ask him to restructure for the purpose of deferring some of the cash, but he'll get every penny, so there won't be a problem with the union.

Isn't it amazing how in the world of sports today it is more talk about money and money instead of talent and talent?
I also have some somewhat rhetorical questions that have been kicking around concerning the Yankees and how they seem to get everyone and anyone under the sun.
Ok, the Yanks are in probably the biggest market in baseball and have a ton of money.
Why can't the Mets go out and spend some money?
Why don't the likes of the Dodgers and the Cubs who are in rather large markets and who also (at least I would assume) have lots of money, don't go out after anyone and everyone like the Yanks do?
Is it because the Yankees are the storied franchise of Major Leauge Baseball?
Is it the guarantee of playing for a winner every bloody year?
Is it the appeal of New York itself and arguably, I repeat ARGUABLY the best baseball fans in the country?
If the Yankees give money to the smaller market teams why do the smaller market teams not go out after the big names? I mean Pudge went to Detroit and I think that is just awesome. He genuinely comes off as if he wants to help a team get better and enjoys the challenge of it all.
Would a salary cap like in the NFL or NBA for that matter cause turmoil and problems for the leauge? Or would it make things better?
I just ask myself these things every now and again cause I wonder what teams are thinking sometimes.

The reason other big market teams aren't able to spend the same sort of cash is because the owners simply do not want to. Personally, I think Steinbrenner is absolutely necessary in major league baseball. There are owners who have MORE cash than Steinbrenner but they prefer to pocket the profits and spend th eminimum amount possible on the team without having fans rioting in the streets. Trust me, if it weren't for guys like Steinbrenner owners would try to spend even less.

Yes Fluff, its because we are the storied Yankees, pay the most, and have the best fans. But listen, last time I checked, Pudge went to Detroit for the money, not to help the team. He lives in Florida and wanted to stay but left to play in a shithole because they paid more.

It looks like Fred Coupon is going to try to steal the Bosses thunder when he announces the A-Rod deal.
It's not yet confirmed but a source high in the Mets organization has reported that Fred Wilpon is going to repaint 3 of the mens bathrooms in the lower level of Shea Stadium (1 coat of paint per bathroom).
Jeff WIlpon has supposedly said that this major renovation of the venerable Queens ballpark along with the key signings of Ricky Bottalico and Jimmy Baldwin more than makes up for the latest move by the Boss.
Gotta hand it to the Mets - it looks like their plan is working!

True that. I'm surprised by this -- Theo redeemed my faith in Boston management by making the off-season moves he made. You HAVE to close that deal no matter the cost. Man, if A-Rod had gone to Boston and helped to win a championship he would have been elevated to God-like status in Boston -- like Russell, Bird, Orr and (now) Vinatieri/Brady.
Now tear down Fenway and build a new stadium with more seats and skyboxes so Boston can generate more revenue.

The Yankees STILL have more homegrown players, minus one which they traded to get A-Rod
why who did they trade that was homegrown?

soriano isn't technically 'homegrown' .... the yanks bought out his contract with a japanese team, and then brought him up through the farm system .....
<marquee behavior+|+|+|+|++|+|+|+|++|+|+|+|+</marquee>
Where was everybody decrying the Yankees when Soriano was initially signed? All this garbage was brought up when he became big, something which was not a guarantee when he was signed. He was a prospect, and the Yankees developed him. That every other team is cheap and gun shy shouldn't mean anything; he wasn't signed for a huge salary. The Twins may not have been able sign him, but the Mets, Red Sox, Indians, Dodgers and teams like that certianly could have. That they fucked up shouldn't be held against the Yankees.
And the difference between Soriano and the Yanks Japanese players is clear: The Japanese players were ready for the majors, and Soriano wasn't.

well, i am not gonna take this argument personally....i am merely quoting what Chris Russo said, is he a good enough source?
Everyone and thier brother knew soriano was going to be good....the closest team to signing him was the Cleveland Indians and when the yanks found out that they were giving the yanks a fight for him he told Soriano's people that no matter how much they said they'd give him he would give them more.
If i had actual proof I would put it up here but all I can do is tell you what a pretty well-known sports talk show host said.....only with less r's

This is why baseball kills me. I'm from Pittsburgh, the Pirates haven't had a winning record since '91. They then dumped their talent (Bonds, Drabek, etc) abd have been "rebuilding" ever since. Rebuilding in any sport should neer take more than three years because of the draft. Poor teams draft higher than better teams, or they trade their draft picks for established talent.
But, international players don't have to get drafted. tHe can declare as free agents. The NBA has major problems of its own, but they have one thing right--anybody who has never played in the NBA must enter the draft in order to play in the NBA. Soriano and both the Matsuies should have entered the draft as rookies. That way, a team without 100 wins or half-a-billion dollars could sign them. Now you have talent spread relativerly evenly throughout the League, and everybody has a chance. Now, more of each team's 162 games have meaning. Now the sport is more compelling.

I hadn't heard that. If true, you definitely have a point. But he still had to be developed, and everybody and their brother thought Todd Van Poppel was the next Cy Young.
This huge monetary advantage is a recent occurance, however. They have always had the largest resources of any team in MLB, but it hasn't gotten ridiculous until recently. I remember the days when the Blue Jays outbid the Yankees for Roger Clemens and the Orioles outbid them for Jimmy Key, Roberto Alomar and Albert Belle. And this was the time they built the dynasty mostly through their system and trades using homegrown talent.
Today, however, their buying is getting ridiculous. My original point is that, even if you discount Soriano, the Yankees still have more homegrown players than the Red Sox. If the Yankees weren't around, the Red Sox would be the Evil Empire and I really think they should realize that once in a while. The Yankees are the only thing standing between the Red Sox and evil.

I have to agree with you 100%. The Yankees wouldn't even have a reason to spend the way they do if not for the sox. Honestly, they could have filled their hole at 3rd with so many other players, andit would not have cost them soriano.
Would they have gone after A-Rod if the Sox hadn't? In all likelyhood, absolutely not.
Both of these teams, as well as a few others, need to be stopped immediately.

Could very well be. The guy is pure slime. The way he fucked over Texas was totally unscrupulous. I lost all respect for him after he convinced Arod to restructure his salary somewhat to give Texas a chance to sign some much needed pitching. Arod agreed in an attempt to help the team, and what did Boras do? He conveniently signed HIS OTHER client Park to a disgustingly overpaid salary even though he stunk, knowingly screwing Texas even worse than they were to begin with.

The Maddux deal is sort of confusing. Espn may have very well jumped the gun just basing this on a report wabc recieved. But if you trully think about it, it is a logical move for Maddux. It's very similiar to when Clemens came. He knows he's eventually going to have to leave the game.
I think with this Arod deal Maddux sees an oppourtunity to vault himself into the spotlight again and perhaps make a serious run at the championship on a team that's a contender every year.
If this was supposed to be an insult, it didn't work, as I have absolutely no fucking clue what you mean or how you're possibly tyring the two together.

ok 2 things, with all the deffered money on his contract TEXAS will end up paying him 140 MILLION dollars for 3 years of service from AROD. so they paid him 46 million per year. Tom Hicks should have the rangers taken away from him for that.
and not nescessarily this year but i could see jeter eventually getting traded because of this deal. yes i know he's the captain and i know he's "got the rings" blah blah blah. but his numbers have gone down every single year, when they resigned him they grossly overpaid for him. now you bring in a guy that is without a doubt a better shortstop let alone all around player. say jeter gets hurt or starts slumping, you've got eric chavez from oakland becoming a free agent next year and is a great 3rd baseman. now maybe they move jeter over to 2nd but i don't see this ending well.
BTW, hearing this guy talk up the yankees during this press conference, considering he is an admitted mets fan is kind of hard to listen to.

Try to be cheap while getting the most expensive player in the league? What were you thinking. I mean REALLY!
I don't get it.They weren't trying to be cheap, they were trying to be sensible. Anyone and thir mother will tell you that A-Rod is overpriced. I don't care how damn good he is, that is a lot of money. Theo Epstein is a new type of GM, hes a Bill James devotee, and he looks at talent in the same manner that Billy Beane and Paul DePodesta do. The whole philosiphy is that in general, GMs pay too much for useless stats. Fiscal responsibility is a big theme. Paying 45 million dollars a year for like 7 more years fo 40 home runs is in no way responsible.
Epstein is not a bad GM simply because he wouldn't make a foolish move to get a great player. And lets not forget that he had A-Rod, its the fucking Union that put the kibosh on the deal. They were scared that if the highest paid player took a pay cut, then all of a sudden, the owners would force every player in the eague to restructure their contracts. God forbid te average salary be somewhere near 1.5 million!!!!!!

I HATE THE YANKEES AND THAT UNION FUCKER!!!! I CAN'T THINK OF HIS NAME!! FUCK!!!!!!!!!
Gene Orza...
I am definitely NOT sold on this Yankees team at all as an impartial baseball fan. For several reasons
1. Sheffield has issues with Balco...that could turn ugly
2. Where is Bernie Williams going to play? He can't play centerfield any more, they were eventually going to move Soriano out there. Are they going to platoon him? At his salary?
3. Giambi's knees stink, and he can't play every day in the field. and there's no Nick Johnson to back him up any more
4. How long before Jeter gets injured, A-Rod takes over short for a couple games, dazzles everybody and starts the inevitable "where should who play" controversy?
5. Speaking of Jeter, his offensive numbers have declined every year since 1999....and he has shown himself to be remarkably brittle the last few years
6. Enrique Wilson at second? That Almonte guy? *snicker*
7. They don't have much speed outside of Lofton, and he's 500 years old
8. The Pitching...
Contreras: Stinks
Lieber: coming off MAJOR arm surgery
Brown: breaks down EVERY year, is also 50 years old
Mussina: Remarkably inconsistent last year...the guy would go from Cy Young to last year's Glendon Rusch from game to game. And how will he handle possibly being "the" guy in a city like NY? He's never had to be their number 1.
And the bullpen? Does anyone in there scare you? Nelson is what...40? And at what point does the 115 pound Mariano Rivera's arm finally fall off?
So finally, we've all seen that good pitching beats good hitting(See the 2001 world series). Being so, what happens if the Yankees miraculously win the American League Pennant, and face a team like the Cubs, whose Rotation goes 5 DEEP(Wood, Prior, Clement, Maddux, Zambrano)? Maddux did have an off year last year, but he still won 16 games, and he won't have to be the "guy" any more in Cubby land...he can settle into obscurity as their 3d starter....where hes more suited to be at this point in his career...
Comparing the yankees to a team like Boston, with 3 Number 1 starters, one of the best closers in the game(still in his prime), and a fabulously improved bullpen that did great in the playoffs, plus Pedro, Nomar, and D-Lowe all in contract years, and everyone not named Mike Cameron does great in contract years...I gotta say the Yankees won't even win the AL East...

HMMMMM Mussina Brown and Vasquez arent all #1 starters?
Keep being delousional Redsox Fans and Yankee Haters. It will Make the Pain just that much worse when we beat your asses ...........AGAIN. And Btw Lowe isent a #1

Lowe went 21-8 two years ago, and was 17-7 last year, even though his ERA was up. On most of the teams in the L, he would be a number 1. He's got one of the best sinkers in the game, and 3 pitches he can throw for strikes. I'd say he's a number 1...not a strong number 1, but a number 1 nonetheless
Mussina has never won 20 games, and as i said, was erratic last year although he went 17-8. Plus, he's about to turn 35. Vasquez went 13-12 last year, but he did strike out 230 people...Ill give you his status as a number 1
Brown breaks down every year, something I already explained...
And you never answered any of my queries about the suspect bullpen, just the same abject garbage about "Redsox Fans and Yankee Haters"

mudo, funny how you fail to mention pedro and shill's health problems. and ask ANYONE in baseball, they'll take moose over lowe. just like they'll take a '115 pound' rivera over foulke, who certainly didnt get the job done in game 4 of the lds last season.
jeff nelson's not 40. he's also not on the yankee roster, you tool.
the boston lineup's got guys who had career years last year, and an alienated shortstop even more 'brittle' than jeter.

1st of all Sox would drive Lowe to Yankee Stadium for Mussina. and 2nd of all. Last time i saw Foulke. He was Spitting the Bit when it counted in the ALDS.

Sorry, you are right. I hope Arods arms fall off!
Also, I wonder if there is any truth to the Bullshit that the Wilpons discussed the possibility of a possibility of a possibility of a trade for arod internally but never followed through because they felt he didnt want to play for the Mets. Supposedly, according to the Wilpons, Arod only wanted to play for Boston or the Yankees.
I guess it pisses me off whether its true or not.

Ahem! The Yankees are not evil

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Yankees are not bad for baseball, and neither was their trade for Alex Rodriguez. Fans who want Major League Baseball to become more like the NFL
conveniently overlook the outcomes of the past three World Series. The Yankees did not win any of them. In fact, MLB has had three different champions the past three seasons, which is more than the parity-crazed, salary cap-diluted NFL can
say.
Doesn't anyone get it? The middle class in MLB is growing, thanks to a labor agreement that siphons money from high-revenue teams such as the Yankees and
redistributes it to low-revenue teams like -- ahem! -- the world champion Marlins. No team can match the Yankees' spending power, but high payrolls do not automatically equate to success, as evidenced by recent travails of the Mets and Dodgers.
Starting with Red Sox owner John Envy, er, Henry, Yankees haters need to get past their contempt for The Evil Empire and understand George Steinbrenner's brilliance. The Boss might be overbearing, but he knows how to run a franchise.
What's bad for baseball is that few other owners can say the same.
Steinbrenner benefits from owning a team in New York, but the Mets have many of the same advantages, and the Yankees are turning them into the Los Angeles Clippers. The Boss is a master at creating new revenue sources, from his
sponsorship deal with Adidas to his YES television network. A lot of good it does him. Under baseball's collective bargaining agreement, the more money he makes, the more he pays. As Yankees president Randy Levine says, "There are never any complaints when we write the check for $60 million."
Sixty million. That was the size of the Yankees' revenue-sharing and luxury-tax contribution last season; this season, it might be $75 million. In revenue sharing, each team contributes 34 percent of its local net revenue to a pool
that is redistributed equally to all 30 teams. With the luxury tax, the Yankees will pay 30 percent on every dollar they spend above this season's $120.5 million threshold. The CBA stipulates that the bulk of the proceeds go toward player benefits and baseball development projects.
In other words, Steinbrenner pays for everything but Bud Selig's dry cleaning.
Many fans instinctively yearn for a salary cap, and heaven knows the Red Sox are in favor of anything that will prevent the Yankees from embarrassing them again. Well, maybe Henry and Co. should start thinking more like Steinbrenner. No doubt, acquiring Rodriguez would have stretched the Red Sox's finances. But it also would have allowed them to: A) purge Manny Ramirez; B) acquire a seven-year fixture at shortstop; C) keep Rodriguez from the Yankees, and D) benefit from his immense marketing appeal.
What's all that worth, ladies and gentlemen?
Steinbrenner embodies the axiom, "You've got to spend money to make money." The CBA is rigged against him, and he's still collecting the most expensive toys. Imagine, if MLB had adopted a fairer system that based revenue-sharing
contributions on potential and not actual revenue, the Yankees still would pay more because they play in a large market. But they wouldn't be punished for making extra money. Nor would other high-revenue teams.
"The Yankees generate more revenue than the Mets, but (Mets owner Fred) Wilpon shouldn't be paying less to the system than Steinbrenner; then you're penalizing Steinbrenner for being good," says Andrew Zimbalist, a Smith College economics professor and author of the book May the Best Team Win: Baseball Economics and Public Policy. "You want to reward owners for being good. Otherwise, they have no incentive."
Of course, MLB never would accept such a plan, preferring to subsidize incompetent owners. Take Selig, for example. His family-owned team, the Brewers, received a reported $15 million in revenue shar
