The green guy in Pinwheel who was sort of their version of Oscar the Grouch used to scare the holy-mother-shit out of me! He had this ice-cream cone nose and was real freaky and later on one time when I was doing acid I hallucinated that he was in the room and nearly jumped out of the window!! You Can't Do That On Television was a great show - very entertaining and edgy/subversive. Didn't talk down to kids, didn't treat them like mini adults and didn't make them have all the answers. It was kind of a Kid Laff In for the 1980s.

Really surprised someone hasn't figured a way to bring it back.

the band from that show was called "the band". dont know
how i remember that nor what it would take to forget it.

like plus and minus, the bert and ernie of pinwheel.
bill cosbys "ickabod marker" from picture pages
the guy who played jeff in todays special was jeff hyslop

The Nick GAS (Games and Sports) channel have a lot of the old ones on there.

Finders Keepers, Double Dare, GUTS, Get the Picture.

I remember they would also use BK Ratchet shoes as the prize.

Hell yeah man.

I remember last year around April/May, I was on google searching for sites on old school Nickelodeon.

I remember back in the '94 era:
"Hey Dude"
"Salute Your Shorts"
"Clarissa Explains it all"
"Are you Afraid of the Dark?"... And a hell of a lot more.

<a href="http://www.public.iastate.edu/~spires/Camp/">A Salute Your Shorts site</a>

I use to have a link to a web-site dedicated to all this old school shit, but I can't find it.

Post some links, yo!

I can't remember the name of this game show, but it was quasi-Jeopardy (three contestants, trivia) and I think it was hosted by the guy who went on to host Nick Arcade, but I might be wrong on that.

It's weird this thread started, because the other day me and some friends were talking about the show "Fifteen" and about how the character of Jake was white and left for Japan and when he came back he was Asian.

Who remembers "Welcome Freshmen"?

I was actually on a show in 5th grade ('90 maybe?) called 'Total Panic.' It was on Saturdays from 9-12 noon for a short while. Kinda variety-type, didn't last very long. I had to wear a fake moustache and throw peppers on a pizza on some kid's head. Our team won, and I got me a fancy new NES system and some crappy game. I wanted the losing team's prize....the Garfield phone where his eyes opened when you picked it up. I already had a NES. Damn.....I wish I still had one of those, I miss legend of Zelda.

The only problem with reality is the lack of background music

Damn I remember that HORRIBLE cartoon Belle and Sebastian with the big ass white dog and the kid searching for his mom somewhere.

How bout The Mysterious Cities of Gold
Make The Grade
Get The Picture

While I was out in California in January my Aunt had NICK GAS---brought back a LOT of memories watching those old game shows like Finders Keepers and Old School Double Dare.

MR Wizard's world was cool but I was kinda turned off to it when they had this weird kid shooting off fireworks or rockets or something and everytime something went off he would be like NEAT! WICKED WICKED!!!! REmember hte bad animation with the shopping cart for Supermarket Science? And the bad short movies like the tornado one?

Turkey TV had a lot of the same actors that YCDTOT starred but I think it only lasted a season or two. At the same time they started this thing at nite called Camp Nickelodeon. I think that was the beginning of them showing old b/w reruns of classic shows.

Todays Special was cool but the mannequin coming to life freaked me out.

Weekend afternoon NIck was boring with their movies on Special Delivery---

By the time cartoons such as David the Gnome came out I was too old to be watching that crap for little kids, until Ren and Stimpy debuted.

Nick started going downhill when they stopped showing hte classic YCDTOT reruns and got that new cast. Also, I miss Dennis the Menace and Lassie reruns, even though I think I have seen every episode three times.

THe show that annoyed me the most was Nick Arcade--and now I remember why after watching the show on GAS network---everytime the music starts that host starts making up some stupid ass lyric to the background music as the kids are walking back and forth from the game to the podium---

Check out the hairstyles from the late 80's on some of them kids--its great--if you have GAS network!

Thank you for this SIG PIC Kat!!

Unfortunately, I am 19, so I only know of the latter day Tomorrow People. Like "Land of the Lost," it was probably better not to have a remake and leave the original alone, when it had an excuse for cheesy special effects.

Ren & Stimpy
Rocko's Modern Life
Pete and Pete (the episode where little Pete and his friends tried to break the record of staying awake for I believe 11 days or so. Great episode)
Salute Your Shorts (when they tried to sneak in the burgers - Classic).
Clarissa Explains It All
Double Dare

This one isn't too old school, but Angry Beavers was a great show. I don't know if its still on anymore though. I remember watching it a couple of years ago, but I haven't really seen it at all lately.

I used to love this show. Now that they changed it and moved it to NBC or whatever, they totally ruined it.

Kenen and Kell

I liked that show. I think the orange soda was a stereotypical thing (more noticable if it was grape soda). And to think that Kenan is on SNL now. It's so weird watchin' it and him doin' Bill Cosby impressions.

He said some really funny stuff that was obviously meant for adults, even though it was a kid show. I think if he didnt have such an obvious affect, he might have lasted longer.

Sorry I'm late to the discussion, but old nickelodeon was great back in the day. In the early 80's it would be commercial free. I've got a few tapes of YCDTTV shows somewhere (unfortunately not enough of the old cast and too much of the 90's cast where the humor was bathroom/fart related), they used to run parody commercials too which eventually were removed when they aired again in the late 80's-90's and had to add commercials. From what I've read elsewhere, they can't really show YCDTOTV anymore because so many people were in all the casts, the royalties would make it cost prohibitive (or some nonsense like that). Turkey Television used to be a smorgasbord of stuff, they had Dana Carvey doing standup, bits from the Uncle Floyd Show, wacky stuff like that. GUTS was from what I remembered was like a little kid's Olympics, and would eventually turn into Global GUTS at times, with kids from Great Britain, Australia, etc. competing as well. There was Double Dare, Prime Time Double Dare, Family Double Dare, Super Sloppy Double Dare. Marc Summers had a huge OCD with cleanliness, which in hindsight makes you wonder why he took the job. Livewire was the serious teen show with Fred Newman, the White Michael Winslow. Then the early 90's brought about stuff like Welcome Freshmen, Salute Your Shorts, Fifteen (increibly brilliant and cheesy soap opera), then when they brought out SNICK there was Clarissa Explains It All, Roundhouse, Are You Afraid of the Dark. I just read that Degrassi is going to be on Nick's digital channel Noggin, along with My So-Called Life.

I was in love with Kevinb from YCDTOT. I think he was my first crush. I always remember when they would try to execute him. I would be so scared.

i had a crush on Alister, weird. I dont know if this was on nick but there was a gameshow where they had to find stuff in a messy house, like keys or something maybe? They had to look in certain rooms and the set was like a house cut in half? I loved that show for some reason.

Anyone used to watch the Cartoon Network like 7 or 8 years ago, when Space Ghost had 2 separate shows? Space Ghost Coast to Coast was only one--I forget what the other one was called.

And Nick Bakay is hilarious. He shows up on Sportcenter every once in a while doing his Tale of the Tape. And he was one a Seinfeld and probably the other Stand-Up's shows, too.

You sir have summed up my exact thoughts, only I liked you can't do that on television too. It's weird though, I can remember that show but I can't remember watching fraggle rock(even though I'm assured I did indeed watch it), what the fuck? Does anyone know what years that show aired vs the fraggles.

I also used to love Clarissa Explains it all, Secret World of Alex Mack, Pete and Pete, Salute your Shorts, Hey Dude, and Wild and Crazy Kids.

hey! im new here. i was hoping someone could help me out. there is this one show from nickelodeon i cannot remember the name of, or even really the plot. i couldnt of been more than 3 yrs old, and im 16 now. the opening of the show was this lake and a big log in the middle. this guy with brown hair would walk on the log and the show would start ya know. then after that part, he would climb through this hole and there would be a little forest setting, and i think from that point on he just told stories to the viewing audience. does anyone know what im talking about!?!?!?

I believe you're talking about "Fred Penner's Place." He was like a Canadian folk singer guy in sort of a rustic setting like you're saying.

I LOVED YCDTOT and Turkey TV even though my parents weren't so keen on me watching it, and I credit both those shows with helping me develop my sense of humor as it is today. I think someone mentioned Python, and Turkey TV definitely played Python skits - I can remember specifically the "Fish Heads" song.

A guy I know was in a studio audience for "Double Dare" and he said Marc Summers was a colossal dick. He must have come to want to end his own life very badly.

Is it any coincidence that MTV and Nick have declined precipitously? Kill Viacom I say.
