Some of you know that I'm involved with a public service organization, but some recent events have come up that have me wondering about continuing my involvement with the higher levels of the organization.
I've run for the state chairman level of this org a few times, and each time, a group of 3 people with some political pull (friends in their camp) in the organization seem to make their best effort to see that I don't get elected. I've stepped past the office I ran for before and am looking for a national office now, as I've been working with the national level of the organization, and many more of them seem to appreciate the work that I have done and tell me so.
A friend of mine has been approached by one of these three individuals who is looking to take another national position, which another of the three (his friend) currently is running for as well. He claims that he will support me against my opponent, if my crowd will support him in his bid.
My friend thinks that this is the best thing- "to get me 'in there'". I think the guy's searching for a soft spot to stick a knife.
Think this guy might be telling the truth? I know there's no honor among thieves, but I've never really seen it in practice this "up close". If he's being sincere, is it worth it to turn your back on your beliefs, however briefly, for "the greater good" in such an instance? It's not like I'm saving a life or anything, but I feel that it's kind of antithetical to what I've been doing for the last 15 years.
