What the fuck does it mean that I have to reset the goddamn clock on my computer every few months? I just found it off by 16 minutes. It's a fucking computer!! Do I need to duct tape the holes int he vaccuum tubes? Should I iron out the punch cards? Should I make it wear a helmet?

Is this at all normal?

The internal battery on your motherboard is most likely going. It should look like one of those disk batteries, about the size of a quarter and it probably just needs to be replaced.

Hmmmm... there is a battery usually buried in the computer thats responsible for that that may need to be replaced, but I hear it costs like $300 to do it, unless you can find it on your own and do it yourself. Its like a watch battery

Thanks for the help. What all is that battery responsible for? Is it only the clock, or the board itself? I'm planning on giving the computer to my niece and nephew in about six months, what am I risking if I ignore it and dump it off on those poor saps?

You can synchronize your clock with an internet time server. Just double click on your clock and hit the "internet time" tab. At least that's how you do it in xp pro.

With most fairly modern systems these days it's mainly for the purpose of the clock. I think on older computers the battery was also tied to the memory of the configuration of the system bios, but I don't think that's the case anymore. What I suggest though is that you open the case, make note of the battery #, go to a computer or electronic store and get the battery, and then only replace the battery when you have the new one right there.

Well, there's the fact that your aunt, uncle, nephew and niece may be exposed to the types of porn you download and get an unenviable look into the depths of your soul.

i was suffering this same horrific torturous problem a few months back but it wasn't my battery. It turned out i had too many tasks and programs running that i 'didn't need' and 'wasn't using' I had to go in my Startup file or window and uncheck them so they wouldn't startup when i booted up or restarted windows. I had 98se then and if you went to a dos prompt and typed "msconfig' it brought up a Startup window. You can do the same with XP Pro.

My work one is 9 minutes fast and I don't have access to fix it. My computer at home has XP and updates itself weekly I think.

There is a program that I have at my computer at work it's called clocksync and it syncronizes the time of your clock with the current time. I'm not sure if there are other ones out there. THe only thing is that at the most it does it hourly.

Before XP, I used a program called Tarsus, that would update me once a day or so. WinXP has it built in, and turned on by default.

The battery is the clock and may control some bios information, depending on the pc.

More like $3 and do it yourself. It's easy to do. Besides, I don't know any computer place that charges $300 an hour for labor.
