I had to use my sister in laws basement phone a few weeks ago, and it was an old rotary model! Pain in the ass, waiting forever for "9" to roll around. The last time I used a pay phone, there was a squished open ketchup packet in the coin slot. About 4 years ago, I was using a pay phone and I always use to peek into the coin slot to see if someone left a quarter in there, and it was full of change! Another time, I was on one and I look up and see theres this wallet on top of the phone, it had like $100 in it. I called the guy and told him I found it and he came to meet me and gave me $50.

huh - last time I went bowling, I picked a bowling ball from the rack that had ketchup in the finger holes. Somebody, probably the same guy who put ketchup in your coin slot, got a good laugh.

Actually, that would be last Saturday night to call my chick and explain why I was over an hour and a half late coming home from the bar. You see, I accidentally went record shopping.

I think this whole cell phone business is a passing fad, much like the CB.

A year ago I was in a swanky neighborhood in Portland to get a haircut. I went to make a call on a local pay phone, stuck the receiver to my ear, and found that someone had squeezed a tube of brown oil paint on the earpiece. So now I have a glob of crap-colored paint on my ear, with about 5 minutes until my haircut. I managed to duck into a hospital where I was somehow able to wash the paint of my ear, while a bunch of homeless guys camping out in there gawked at me. I suppose there's some sort of moral to this story. Or maybe it's just a buncha stuff that happened.

Pay phones have their advantages. For example, calls made from a pay phone don't show up on your cell bill for your wife to see.

Of course, I wouldn't know anything about that.

as a verizon tech let me just say, pay phones are usually a real pain in the ass to fix anyway, so if any of you were to pick up a job for a payphone would you:
a. spend all day fixing a phone that doesn't really belong to anyone and will get used maybe once a month
or
b. read the paper/take a nap and run a few errands.

oh and kennethc

So now I have a glob of crap-colored paint on my ear

Ahh, cool someone with answers.

Q: I heard pay phones were on the way out, to be phased out actually, eventually; due exactly to the loss of demand due to ubiquitous cel phones. Ya? Na?

Q: I heard pay phones were on the way out, to be phased out actually, eventually; due exactly to the loss of demand due to ubiquitous cel phones. Ya? Na?

hmmm i'm not sure what ubiquitous means but here goes.
well when i started with the company 7 years ago there was a seperate gang of guys that just serviced pay phones but since about 99% of people have cell phones they have since put those guys back into the regular workload. the demand really isnt there anymore.
they probably won't be phased out completely only because
a. quite a few of the phones you see, merchants actually own.
b. alot of what we call CLEC companies (at&t, sprint, and the ghetto compaines such as NJteleconnect) think its a way to make some money even though verizon owns all outside plant and has to do most of the work. btw if any of you have these companies as your local provider, if the problem is inside your house, good luck getting a tech out to fix it, heres a hint most of these companies don't have techs. i listened to some lady bitch to me yesterday about how she;'s been out of service for 3 months b/c whatever company she uses keeps trying to send verizon out to fix it and the problem isn't outside, its in her house which ain't my problem. so there you go i'm sure she uses pay phones.
c. incase of some sort of disaster i.e. september 11th when cell phones wouldn't work.

I thought pay phones were made up for that movie Phone Booth. I went to 53rd and 7th and didn't see the one in the movie, so it must be made up.

A favorite one are here was "Die Hard 2" which has a scene filmed at Dulles International Airport, right outside DC, except that when Willis is on the pay phone phone around here it clearly says "Pacific Bell."

Time to go nail another thesis to the WJFK door...

Been so long, I can't remember.

I had a friend who worked for Verizon and took care of payphones in Monmouth County. He asked me to build 2 redboxes to test the upgrades they installed in the payphones (to specifically defeat them). Not that I would, er, uh, know what a redbox is or use one myself....
