View Full Version : The Return of ECW?

Thought I'd post this, since it hasn't already been done so but has been a topic of some discussion in the IWC this past week.

Also, I thought some of you would find this interesting, seeing as some of you were ECW fans......although I'm not sure exactly why.....

WWE Could Add Third ECW-Type Brand

Could WWE be planning a third brand?

There are a lot of rumors going around that WWE may introduce a third brand, one that would be more "hardcore" and have an ECW-like formula. WWE owns the ECW name so they could use that name if they wanted. The thinking is that they could air shows for the new brand late at night. This was actually the idea that WWE had back with Shotgun Saturday Night, but that never panned out.

Of course, doing this would contradict the new "safer mat wrestling" formula that management is trying to establish with RAW and Smackdown. At the same time, WWE has more timeslots at their fingertips if needed and they basically have to do something very different for any new show to work.

Update on potential third brand...

As reported last week, a lot of rumors are going around that WWE may create a third ECW-type brand, possibly even naming it ECW. At this point, if the brand gets created it would like have a show in what is currently the Confidential timeslot. WWE is now going away from "shoot" type things and thus Confidential has become a "fluff" show which has reflected in declining ratings. WWE also may use the third brand to finally increase their total yearly PPVs from 12 to 16.

It would give Dreamer, RVD, the Dudleyz, Lance Storm, Hurricane, Test, Scott Steiner, Rhyno, Shannon Moore, Tajiri something to do now.

So I am all for it. Is Stephanie going to be GM though?

As long as they created (or restored) its' own belts & it wouldn't just be a vehicle to let more Tough Enough people that weren't good enough wrestlers but weere nice people try to be announcers, I would love to see the ECW logo on TV again.

As long as it doesn't directly involve anyone named McMahon, anyone married to a McMahon, or anyone who kisses the asses of the McMahons and their spouses, I'm all for it. Also, get people other than their current crop of announcers (with the possible exception of Tazz) to commentate; although Joey Styles has said millions of times that he'd never work for Vince McMahon, a mark can dream.

However, I was really getting used to Stevie Night Heat. Oh well...

If I recall, Joey is independently wealthy, so McMahon's money is but a whisper to him.

And yes, I was expecting Bisch's WWe debut ever since WCW was bought out. Guy needs to cover his trips to Gold Club somehow.

Nothing will be like the ECW in its glory days 1995-1999

Actually, I'd stop at '97, but I do agree. However, at this point, I'll accept almost anything.*

*almost... see previous post for qualifiers[/i]

Wait, wait - ECW had glory days?

.....huh.

Anyway, I think IN THEORY this has potential, but only if they make it COMPLETELY separate from RAW & Smackdown. And when I mean completely separate, I mean that.

No highlights of what happened on RAW or Smackdown the week before, no interpromotional matches, none of that shit. Make it almost like a separate independent promotion, and maybe you'd convince me to watch it.

Dreamer's career has been dead for look how long. It was on it's death bed even during the Taz-Tajiri feud in ECW due to his back problems. Bringing him to the WWE made no sense to me being that he can't wrestle and take bumps like he once could. And besides, when was the last time you've seen Dreamer wrestle for more than 5 minutes?

With that said, if they do make this new brand, then guys like Moore, Matt Hardy, Paul London, Akio, Sakoda, Funkai, and all the other guys who get screwed on Raw and Smackdown should surely be listed on the roster.

I remember in the dying days of ECW Dreamer had a series of matches with C.W. Anderson that he took some SICK bumps on and those matches went at least to the 15 minute mark.

the return of ecw would be a very welcome thing. it would use alot of the underused talent in the fed rite now. and it would be a great way to reintroduce jeff hardy, he would thrive in an ECW-type environment. and as far as additioncal ppvs goes thats a drawback as i see it. i mean they could tack on some ecw matches onto the preexisting ppvs. and i dont mean alot of matches either. they could throw in 3 or 4 matches, and allow feuds to be built up over longer periods. and as far as commisioner goes, it should be taz! hes best fitted having ecw roots. and paul heyman can go back to color commentating.

It would be awesome for ECW to come back!! Mick Foley should be the commish.(he is the king of hardcore). but i have 2 questions maybe some one could help me

1. will everyone get their old gimmick back? like Dreamer is the innovator of violence and the return of the Impact Players

2. Will the bring back the old ECW arena? one of the main reasons ECW did so well is they made the ticket prices so cheap you cold afford to go to the show. front row tickets used to be like 20-35 buck and the might be a chance Bam Bam to throw Spike dudley at you.

Joey Styles only says that he wouldn't work for the WWE for any reason because he knows they wouldn't hire him anyway. Worthless one-trick-pony jackoff. Like every meaningless table spot deserved an "Oh My God" Just shut up.

Or Jonathan Coachman.

Or Josh Matthews.

Or Bill DeMott.

See where I'm going with this?

Let it be stated for the record in the highly unlikely case that Kevin Kelly or anyone else with even the smallest ties to the WWE or wrestling world as we know it should happen upon this thread, that the opinions stated by poster with the screenname Tazz are not reflective of those of Ron Bennington, Fez Marie Whatley, the RonFez.net message board, Peter Senerchia, or any other sensible wrestling fan on the face of God's green Earth.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming...thank you and please carry on.

p.s.: I did a google search for the word blasphemy, in hopes that I would find a tasteless enough picture to match my feelings on this topic (didn't even come close to finding one, but I digress)...I stumbled across this pic...anyone else think this young lady looks a little like RonFez.net's own Frenchy?

You people are awfully inconsiderate of other people's opinions.

But for the record, even the following shitty ass announcers rank higher then Joey Styles:

Tony F'n Shiavone
Don West
Mike Tenay
Larry Zabisco
Superstar Billy Graham

Don West over Joey Styles? Tazz, I may need to kick your ass.

And ECW had it's time. If you want proof enough, it made the then Big 2 take notice and make changes to their product based on ECW's popularity.

I was a big ECW fan from late 95 and the thing I enjoyed about it was that you got a varied card, yes there was the sick violence for the sake of violence, and there was some cartoonish stuff going on, but there were also the Malenko/Gurrerro Classics, the first exposure a lot of American fans had to Lucha Libre lead by Mysterio and Juvi...

If you look at ECW as just the company that introduced the Hardcore Gimmick, you are missing out.

I liked ECW, but it really needs to be treated as a seperate company that has no visible ties to the WWE.

And 16 ppvs brings us back to the ppv overexposure. Get rid of a couple of the second tier, unpopular ppvs and give them to the ECW guys so there's more time to build up Raw and SD storylines between ppvs.
