View Full Version : Throwback Year: 1983

First off, I think this would go over GREAT on the show if Ron and Fez would do it. They are so great at talking old school and for all I know, maybe they may have done it before.

Kind of along the lines of Mike the Teachers Van Halen thread too.

Ok. The Deal. My crazy idea.

The year is 1983. In this time, place, anywhere between January - December have a discussion as if it were that year. Like we all know what happened that year but we are kind of putting ourselves back to that time to predict.

Sports, music, games, brand new cable TV, politics, movies, fads, foods, etc. Weren't we on the brink of Nuclear Winter that year?

For instance:

The Day After had to be the scariest film I have ever seen. What the FUCK!

The Islanders look really strong again this year and they may make another strong Cup run.

I thought Off The Wall was something but this Thriller album from Michael Jackson is fucking amazing. And the video? Man is that some shit.

I can't believe I spent $50 on these sneakers! $50! I thought $15 for my Chuck's was high.

Last night at the arcade I totally ruled at Pac-Man. High Score of 74300! Beat that!

Kind of like that. Go and roll with those topics. I was just giving examples. I know a lot of you weren't even born then but use your imaginations and see what transpires.

Like I said this would probably come across great on radio cause hell, there could even be music related lead-ins from the year of choice.

I like it! "1983 Game Show Game Show"

The Day After had to be the scariest film I have ever seen. What the FUCK!

I know that's right! That movie, and zombie movies at the time (which did seem to thrive in the "end of the world" mentality people were lugging about) gave me the worst nightmares I've ever had.

It was especially bad living and growing up so close to the nation's capital, back in the early 80s; you just don't knew we were a target. In college I actually embraced that emotion by buying a print of DC with a mushroom cloud looming over it - it was the only way I could deal with it.

It was NEVER a question of IF we got bombed by Russia, but WHEN. The movies, television shows (like "The Day After") and even music (Sting's "Russians") all reflect that powerless anxiety of growing up during that closing act of the Cold War. Not a fun time.

In the last movie, Obi-Wan said, "That boy is our last hope" and then Yoda said, "No. There is another," so I'm hoping that it turns out that Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia are brother and sister and that Chewie is their cousin and that all three become Space Cannibals!

Now that Douglas Adams finished the trilogy, I'm going to go back and read them all again!

HOW ABOUT THEM ORIOLES! I think this is the making of a dynasty!

O! R! I! O! L! E! S!!

This Gary Hart fellow seems to have a good shot at going up against Regan next year!

I'm really going to miss M*A*S*H.

Pet Semetary scared the shit out me, but I still think that Different Seasons is the best thing King has ever written.

I hear they are talking about making a movie version of Elfquest!

I am 10.

My summer consisted of fishing and playing war in the woods.

Where is Grenada?

Everyone loves Sally Ride.

Channel 10 news came to our street to interview everyone because we live on Oriole St. and the Phillies are playing the Orioles. The dumbass actually asked us who we are rooting for.

Anyone else think it was crap that everyone's parents left our basketball championship early so they could watch MASH? That show isn't even funny! Dukes Of Hazzard rules!!

I'll see Return Of The Jedi again this weekend. My Dad took me to see The Right Stuff, which was long, but very good.

I saw the commercials for Christine & Brainstorm but I'm not allowed to see them.

I went an saw Spacehunter - Adventures In The Forbidden Zone and Jaws 3-D with 3D glasses I got at Burger King. I also got some new Star Wars cards there as well.

The principal of our school came over the loud speaker and told us not to watch The Day After because it shows people and children being melted by nuclear bombs. I can't wait to see it!!

I made out for the first time with Jenny Chihochy during The Outsiders at the Berkeley Cinemas.

It was weird. It was like I could feel every tastebud on her tounge as we "Frenched".

I broke up with her literally 24 hours later. Her sister called me to bitch me out.

She was probably right.
