i was once on the delancey st. subway stop. it was late. i was sitting down and a homeless man sat next to me. i was eating some pringles. the homeless man pointed to the can of pringles in my hand and it seemed like he wanted some. i gave him the whole can but i felt really bad because there was only one pringle left. i wanted to give him some money but i only had enough for the bus fare.
so, what do you all think? are homeless people just lazy?
homeless people: yay or nay?
what should we do with them?

Girlgerms,
In my line of work, I come into contact with the homeles almost daily. Some of these people are there by their own actions(alcoholism, drug addiction, etc.) There Re those, however, who are either mentally ill or other circumstances that can't be avoided. you can't lump all the homeless into the same categories. There are no easy answers to this problem. I deal with them usually in an emergency situation and can only take action dictated by my job-It's really sad to see them and not be able to really help them.

I only give money to homeless people who put on a show without asking. I was walkign down the street and there was a homeless guy with no shirt on and a Santa hat on and no teeth screaming Merry Christmas. A guy like that you just give money too because I liked their act. A guy saying "can I have money?" or with a sign saying "homeless" I don't give money too. Call me a dick, if I'm paying, I want something in return.
Of course there's always the fun of asking the homeless guy why he doesn't have a job, then slicing the shit out of him and kicking his dog.

There still are asylums. Now they're just for depressive girls though. Hot, young, emotionally insecure, suicidal girls. My type of girl.

I feel SOOOO bad for the homeless. I always give them my spare change and I usually give street performers a dollar or two.
Every time I leave LI and go into the City, I see these people, I get overwhelmed with thoughts like "Why am I lucky enough to have a nice house" "Why do I get to live comfortably, while others are left to rot on the street"
And then when I deliver pizzas to the real Rich mother fuckers in HUGE mansions, I get sick to my stomache to think that there is some one on a street corner freezing his ass off while this guy has 5 bedrooms he has never been in.
I work hard, I save my money, but I wouldn't be where I am if I didn't have parents that were financialy stable, that could send me to college and provide me with a worry free childhood.
ALWAYS give to the homeless, even if it is there own fault they are there, cause giving up $1 isn't going to kill you, and it WILL feed him (or at least help him get a Colt 45)

I dunno, I can go either way on this subject. I don't give money but I do buy food for people. Sometimes they look at me like they're annoyed I didn't give them cash. One time I was in a Duane Reade when this woman asked me to buy her diapers for her baby. I did it and felt like maybe I got scammed. I waited inside the Duane Reade for an hour to see if she'd come back and return the diapers for the cash. She didn't come back. I walked out the door and she came up to me. "I waited for you! I wanted to thank you again! I wanted to show you my baby." She had left it with the guy at a news stand. I sort of felt bad for not trusting her but in the back of my mind I thought, "Eh, she probably got the cash after I left."
Then I hear about the mentally ill homeless who push people in front of trains b/c they don't take their meds. I can't help but think, "Lock 'em up for ever!!" A few weeks ago, I was walking down the stairs to the PATH station. I saw this homeless guy sitting there. He kept sticking his foot out and trying to trip people. When I walked by him, he stood up. I felt him step on the bottom of my sandal and he pushed me hard. If I hadn't been expecting something to happen I would have gone head first down the stairs! What the *F*!?
I feel horrible for people who lose their homes at no fault of their own. Sometimes life draws you a crummy hand.

GIRLGERMS - Does homelessness exist because of individual pathology, or is society pathological and it in turn causes homelessness and other social ills?

Tompoo,
You have a heart of gold! That's exactly how I feel.
As I said earlier, I see the homeless everyday and I feel so helpless when I can't do more for them. I get alot of flack from some of my co-workers over this(I'm supposed to be a tough guy) but like you pointed out, we are so lucky to be where we are.
Bless you, Bro
