I mean it comes on so much all the time and I dont think it really is but I see so much on tv. It's being treated like one on all the sports networks. So what do you think?

it's like asking who's the athlete: the horse or the jockey?

Poker is a Game.
In Game Theory a game is a situation or strategy where there will always be a best move [or moves] at any given point.
Tic/Tac/Toe is a Game; because in Game Theory, for any X, there is a 'best' spot or spots for the O, and then the next X, etc.
-----
This ignores the bluffing; it means for any given moment in a card game, there is a 'best' course of action for each player, to maximize their chances of winning. I think.

If ESPN considers scrabble a sport then poker has to be a sport.

Poker is a game.
And in horse racing, both the horse and the jockey are athletes. Jockeys are, pound for pound, some of the greatest athletes in the world.

It's a game, not a sport. There'e no athletes in Poker. The athletics starts after they win, when they're banging 4 Vegas Hookers in tandem.
Thanks Katylina, you make the shittiest sigs.

I think that you cannot define sports soley based upon contest. I don't consider racing a sport either. Most things in life are a contest of some sort. Does that make it a sport?
Still, ya gotta love the Spelling Bee.

ah, so wh was manowar voted as one of the best athletes of the century, but failed to mention the jockey. also, it's kind of like nascar: is the car as involved as the driver?

I always thought of a sport as something that involves skilled physical exertion with a competitive nature. I don't know consider horse racing a sport b/c you need a good horse and that's it.

dictionary.com defines sports with words like 'active pastime' and 'physical exertion'.
nay on poker, golf, racing, billiards, spelling bees, and Magic. although it does take SKILL to do some of those things.

I don't know enough about NASCAR to comment, but as for jockeys, you try balancing on the balls of your feet on a thin piece of steel while steering a 1200 pound, often unpredictable animal at sustained speeds of 40+ mph, risking your life, around an oval track with a bunch of other guys doing the same thing. Not to mention, the complete lack of energy you have to perform such a task from lack of eating to make weight.
