I remember seeing him the 1st time on tv declaring the WWF world title vacant after Andre the Giant won the strap from Hogan then giving it to Ted DiBiase, then Announcing a Tourney at WM IV

I remember thinking he was the most inept president I'd ever seen running any company... before learning that he was just a figure-head.
Farewell, Jack. I'll miss dreading to see your face whenever "controversy" occured.

As I was reading through the Novel de WrestleCrap and stumbled across the various Jack Tunney bit I remembered how authoritaive he seemed to be. I mean I thought he was the guy in charge. Maybe it is because of naivity or just bad storylines nowadays or the fact that I read the dirtsheets but none of the newer "Presidents", "GM's", "Sherriff's" or "whatever other wrestlers who are given "authority roles" because they can't hack it in the ring but NEED the TV time for ratings" just don't come off as anything believable. Tunney did a great job of it and even though it was the late 80's and yes, it did come off as a bit cheesy, it got over.

I always thought Jack Tunney was some wino Vince found at a pub near the WWF headquarters, felt pity on him, and gave him a job.

Does anyone know what Tunney did prior to assuming the presidency?

i believe he was a bouncer at a local vaudville club in his younger days.
He was the promoter of one of the Canadian territories that Vince took over in the early 80s.

Jack Tunney, known best as the figure-head president of the WWF in the '80s and early -'90s, died on Saturday, January 24. The obituary in his hometown says he "died suddenly." He was 68 years old. His funeral will be tomorrow at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church on 354 St. Clair Avenue West at 10 a.m.
WHAT!!! He was Only 68? I thought he was at least 70 back then.
