View Full Version : I pay with credit @ gas stations. Why "top off"

Seriously.

Everytime I go to the gas station, I use my credit/debit card. Let's say my total is $11.72. Why does the gas pumper guy always "top it of" at $12.00? If it stops at $11.72, and he "tops it off" then I'm paying for excess in the hose and, therefore, part of the next customer's purchase.

I tell them not to do it. I should actually get out of my car and take the hose out of my gas tank. I think I'll do that next time.

Yes, I live in Jersey.

i've noticed some 'top off' and others leave it at the figure when the pump cuts off...

never thought about the gas in the hose but if they're consistant then you're getting the previous guys 'hose full'...

would think that makes it all 'even out'?...

I also love how they always post that the price of gas is $1.55 and NINE TENTHS OF A PENNY per gallon

and selling something for $19.98 always annoys me....just say the thing costs TWENNY BUX

any why not ask them to do it when you have to roll down your window and tell them the grade of gas you want?

i'm sure it's a convience thing for the pumper and pumpee. would you really want 27 cents rattling around in your pocket.

I think they would have to actually turn of the pump and just let the hose fuel drain out if they were going to make a profit off of this scam.

I use the mobil speedpass. More convenient than the credit card, but they feel the need to give me round numbers as well. Yes, I fill up in Jersey.

I have to pump my own gas, so I have no idea what you rich people who are better than me are talking about.

They are forbidden to make that treacherous left hand turn in Jersey also. (at least in a good portion of the state).

I guess one idiot chain smoking while pumping gas blew it for the rest of the state.

I push in the flap in the pump housing, or pull down the thing, and then squeeze out all of the extra drops. This seems to prevent the gas from coming out when you pull the pump out.

Although it refers to Arizona, it is applicable to gas in general...

my problem is when you say $10 or $20...the last 25› takes forever...forget it, i'll take the loss. just don't make me sit through the slow count so it is exactly the amount. especially because when it hits say $9.80 on a $10 purchase it stops...i have to wait for the gas guy to restart it and the crawl to $10 is painful to watch.

It's just enjoyable to look at nice round numbers. Force of habit, I've caught myself doing it when I've had to pump my own gas.

Funk that.........I ain't getting out of my car in the rain or freezin' cold and having my hands smell like gasoline for what, to save a few pennies per gallon ?? I pumped gas as a kid for years, and dag-nabbit, I ain't doing it no more. Probably the only good thing about living in N.J.

Gas prices in NY suck. My suburban costs almost $50 to fill up.

I would gladly pump my own gas if it mean I could buy beer in the Wawa right afterward.
