I'm contemplating purchasing a new computer. My question is thusly... How is possible to transfer my files and programs from the old computer to the new one?? Now I know about backing things up but I don't have a r/w cd drive on the old one. Is there some way I can tie in the old hard drive onto the new computer to send over the files I want to keep?? or is this just another futile gesture on my part? Don't forget...I'm really, REALLY smart in certain things but when it comes to computers......I should be on the small bus!!!!!

You can always add the hard drive from your old computer as a 2nd hard drive to your new computer. That's a relatively easy procedure.

There are kits you can buy that come with the necessary cables and such for not too much money... fifty bucks or so. Either that or get a lot of floppies.

One of the things I want to get next are these USB keychain drives. They literally are small enough to fit on your keychain but they hold hundreds of megabytes of information. You can plug it into the USB port on your existing computer, backup as much info to it as you can and then plug it into the new computer to transfer the files. Depending upon how many files you have it may take a few times to move it all over, but it seems pretty quick and easy to do.

I've heard of them being called "keychain drives" to "thumbdrives", etc. They hold about 64, to 128, to 256+ megabytes of data.
I also recommend two hard drives on a pc, I've used two drives with every system I have, and its the best thing to have when you need to reinstall Windows or Linux, I just move whatever I want to save to the other hard drive and then format the drive that windows is on. Additionally if your hard drive has a lot of storage space you could partition it into various drives and accomplish the same thing, though I still prefer to have two drives on the system.

you can also get a ghosting program. it basically holds a copy of the hard drive and then lays it down on the new one. like when you copy a cd almost. your comp will have the exact same shit and work the same way, but with the performance of the new one

The only reason I wouldn't recommend doing that is that when you make a ghost image of your current system it will have the drivers for various things in your old system and you don't want them to load in the system if the video, sound and other drivers are not for the same parts, you could end up with many conflicts and problems that way.

The only sure way to do it is to get a bunch of cases of paper and write everything on your hard drive down. Then keep the stacks of paper near an open window and you'll meet the girl of your dreams when she helps you pick up the wind-blown sheets.

Reeshy, from the problems you use to describe with the old system, you might just want to start off fresh and forget about the old files, it sounded like you had a virus or corruption, and if you transfer the info, youll likely transfer the virus too. It happened to me and it was a hassle. Get windows XP professional, I find it so damn solid, its never gone down. Id just make pretend you had a fire and throw it away, or else send some stuff through Yahoo as attachment emails and they have builit in Norton antivrus, but they only allow a certain amount of info on the free acct. Whatever new system you get, make sure you get a good antivirus program like Norton or whatever and do regular updates and scans as well as Microsoft updates to get the latest fixes for stuff, also get the free spybot and Adaware and do their updates and scan regularly. I know it sounds like alot to do, but youll get a system down and fall into a routine. So many people dont do this stuff, and theres really nothing "wrong" with their computers, but they hang up so much because of faling to do this that they just get new comps every few years.

reesh, you ought to do the cool thing and go ahead and buy a new computer but keep the old one right next to the new one, so it looks like you're some rich cool computer geek.
I figured you'd live out my "dual computer" dream.

If they both have an ethernet card couldn't he somehow connect them with a x-over cable and create a small netbui or ip network and transfer the files over?

Yes, forgot about that. If he buys a router, and has an ethernet card, he can use one computer to remotely host files, and use the other one to "download" the files from a network folder.

Exactly! What I do is, whenever I buy a new peice of eqipment, I put the new piece within sight of the old one and let the old one "think about it" for a while, like a day or two. Right now, across from this one is another tower thats nothing compared to this one, but it is enough to keep this one "on its toes", because it "knows" it can easly be replaced!

i'll be sure to contact you if i want the ins-and-outs of being a chickenhawk ;p
but check the compusa circular tomorrow. and external hard drive is a great investment. and you can usually find one with a decent rebate.

even without the router if you put them back-to-back and give them ip's on the same network such as 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2, wouldn't they communicate successfully?

On Saturday after I posted about the thumb drives I went looking online and saw some deals on Compusa's website so I decided to go to the store to check them out. I found a Sony MicroVault 256mb drive for $59. Apparantly the sign with the price was posted incorrectly and they didn't want to give it to me for the price, though I argued with them that they have to give it to me for the price it's posted as. They tried to act like the item wasn't the same as the one on the sign, but they were wrong. They had to give it to me for that price.
I just used it this morning at work, my boss went away on a company trip and we needed to retrieve the files he saved to his laptop while he was away. I backed up the files to the Micro Drive (which took under a minute), and then copied the files to his desktop system, took another minute to do that. I didn't need any software or drivers to get it to work either, though it includes a cd for Windows 98 and 95 systems. Luckily all the pc's I use at work are 2000 or XP, and my pc at home is XP so it's real easy to back up stuff.
Previously I had to use my zip drive to do backups, as easy as the zip drive is, this is 10x easier and faster.

I wouldn't recommend moving your programs over. You are better off reinstalling those from scratch because occassionally programs will put files in different places that it needs.
I have firewire harddrives connected to my pc that are great for saving my files. If I want to move computers, just move the drives and I'm good to go.
