View Full Version : MLS expands back to 12 teams

I know you people don't care about soccer, but I wanted to fish out a discussion from the few soccer fans on this board. in 2002, the MLS went from 12 teams to 10 teams, folding the two florida clubs.
In 2005, there will be two new expansions. One will be Chivas USA (I hate that that name) site to be determined. The other will be in Cleveland. But the name is uncertain. I personally think the club should be called The Cleveland Steamers. The emblem could be an old style steam ship riding on the lake.
thoughts?

i'm actually trying to get into soccer since i hate basketball and i can't really get into hockey once the playoffs start. been watching alot of the manchester united games on YES. before cablevision pulled ppv's off regular cable i watched the english premier league on saturdays. only thing i hate about the sport is the offsides rule. as far as i can tell, if you go past the last defender before the ball gets there this is an offsides. if thats the case why wouldn't i, as a defender, just keep running up field a little to make you offsides?

there are plans for 2 more by 2008 or 09. the two florida clubs were a mistake. they were a drag on the league. they're just getting back to where they should havew been.

1. furie you're great for starting a soccer thread
2. thats cool that the MLS is expanding, I'm assuming that means its a success so far, even though I feel guilty for not following it as much as the EPL. There was no MLS when I got into soccer
3. Newcastle plays Liverpool tomorrow morning 4th round FA Cup match which is exciting cause its a single eliminination tournament and I'm a huge Newcastle fan, I'm actually going to a match next season.

success is debatable. it's surviving, and I guess that is a victory of sorts. Better than the old NASL.
I too follow EPL, but I've actually always been a big Ajax fan. I can't really say why.

1. wouldn't it just be easier to be a real madrid or man u. fan? since both those teams seem to have everbody? (or is it kind of like being a mets fan and hating the yankees for this very reason, if so i understand)
2. so can someone explain to me my offside question that if i'm playing defense, why can't i just run past you so the play would automatically be offsides.
3. they're probably expanding because they should get more popular with this freddy adu kid coming up.
4. why the hell is beckham so popular? i know he isn't the best player in the world. he isn't even the best on real. guys like figo, zidane, rivaldo, renaldo, keane...are they just not as popular because they're not as good looking?
5. how the hell do the fans know all the words to those songs and which songs to sing at any given time? it takes fireman ed a good 20 minutes to get the crowd to say jets and thats only 4 letters.

yeah its kind of like that except in England they usually follow the teams that are from there own town and these people mostly live in the same town their whole life, so it becomes a city pride thing
2. so can someone explain to me my offside question that if i'm playing defense, why can't i just run past you so the play would automatically be offsides.
You CAN do that, its called the offsides trap. Here's a better explanation.

4. why the hell is beckham so popular?
He's a decent soccer player, arguably the best crosser in the game. 12 year old girls love him and his wife was a Spice Girl (which apparently still means something over there)
5. how the hell do the fans know all the words to those songs and which songs to sing at any given time?
They're either songs that have been part of the city or team's history for years or songs that the local radio station plays written by supporters of the team. Or usually they just make up a song on the spot using the melody of a popular song so its easier to follow and learn

I don't get how Florida teams could be a drag on the league, especially Miami. I would think with such a huge latino population down there that a soccer team would go over huge.
How can Ohio support two teams and Florida none?!

Is MLS still thinking about putting a team on Long Island?
I hope that Harrison stadium goes through. Giants Stadium is way too big for MLS soccer.
Clint Mathis is going to play in Germany this season. That sucks but it will be good for the US National Team in the long run. Glad I got to see him play when I did.

well the Metros are getting their own 25k seat stadium allegedly in Harrison, NJ. as part of the redevelopment project, perfect size considering the team averages about 20k/game

the Columbus Crew and the LA Galaxy both have SSS. The new Staduim in Harrison, when and if it's built will be SSS. And both expansion teams will also have them.
So on what are you basing that statement on?

1. they do have a big share of fair weather fans. But I will admit it is great to watch Real play with all those superstars.
2.offsides applies to passes and deflections. That is why if you the defender get deep offensively, a guy with a ball on the other team can dribble right by you and have acres of space in front of him with only him and the goalie.
Offsides is called when the person who receives the ball was passed the most back defender when the ball is kicked to him.
Sounds confusing I know. Anyone else who can explain this clearler please do. There's a pdf whole rule book on FIFA.com that you can download.
3. I don't think thats the case. They just need solid local owners for a market who will develop their own stadium so they can make a profit for themselves and the league.
4. Good looking and English. All the Anglo-files (like Ron?) around the world are fascinated.
5. Locally historic. Its like Yankee doodle or My Country Tis Of Thee, but on a local level.
When to sing them? Maybe they have traditions to sing them in a particular order.
This new interest in soccer is a good thing. Those poor NHL fans are going to have something to fall back on when their league dies.

True, but there are a lot more than just Cubans down there. Maybe it's a money issue.

i used to live in south Florida. nothing survives but baseball and football. both hockey teams are struggling, and actually, the devil rays a on the verge of collapse too. it's not a money thing, it's an interest thing. the Miami fusion was holding games with a few hundred in attendance. The Mutiny (who had the coolest emblem in MLS) was even worse.

So it looks like the two new expansion teams in the MLS will be one team in Salt Lake City(why, I have no idea) and LA will get a second team(again, i have no idea why).

...I still think we should call soccer "football" like the English do and then change boxing to "soccer" (because it sounds like "socking" someone, like punching) and then with football what we do is we could put the boxing on that sport but I'd prefer it if we changed the name altogether; maybe call it "Tackle-Time!"...........or "Tackle-Time U.S.A.!" to be all patriotic like...
