View Full Version : Nintendo: Officially Losing Their Minds

I've always been a huge supporter of Nintendo and I've owned almost every system they've ever made since NES. Always appreciated their first-party titles like Mario, F-ZERO, etc.
But in recent years, between N64 and the less than stellar overall product of the GameCube, Nintendo has been overwhelmingly dethroned by Sony. Now, typically you'd think this would influence Nintendo to make wise business decisions and put their all into every product they make... But now Nintendo has officially gone insane. They've revealed their mystery product that has been talked about for months now, and it's
THIS (http://pocket.ign.com/articles/473/473999p1.html)
I'm baffled. I know it's not their next console, and it's not their next Game Boy... It's seperate from all of that. But with the shape they're in right now, it probably doesn't make sense to spend extra money on a product that is almost GUARENTIED for failure. Two screens?! I looked at my calendar to make sure it wasn't an IGN April Fools trick. The screen is usually one of the more expensive parts of portable electronics, and Nintendo has decided to throw TWO on to this product. WHY?! This is great for people with more than one head, but that's not a very strong demographic to aim for, is it? Nintendo is seriously going Michael Jackson on us.

This is yet another stupid move by Nintendo. Here is there biggest one.
IGNcube was not only surprised in 2003 by Nintendo's new (or old) philosophy -- we were shocked. After reporting its first ever posted loss, Nintendo announced that it plans to "go back to the basics." The company's new focus is to develop software that is easily accessible for gamers of all ages and that requires no prior experience to play. To help push this simplicity concept, Nintendo also stated that it would continue to rely on established franchises and explore new connectivity features between the GameCube and Game Boy Advance to help draw in a wider audience. IGNcube was wholly surprised at this statement because this philosophy rubs completely against the current trend in the industry -- complex games are growing in popularity and have proven more successful. Nintendo has had a lackluster grip on the market, and this announcement assures that the company will continue to behave has it has instead of adapting to what gamers are looking for.
There only smart move was making it $100.

While I agree that this idea is insane and what you said wrote is right on, the rest of your post is bullshit.
Its a somewhat like what Sony is doing with PSX. Not the next console, not the next handheld player, just a way to make money. As far as business decisions, lowering GCN to $100 was good for everybody.
Nintendo has been overwhelmingly dethroned by Sony
In quality of games or sales? If you mean quality you're nuts. What is not "stellar" about Gamecube?

if nintendo can survive virtual boy it can survive this.

the sports games. by far the worst system as far as sports games go. and fighting games the controller inhibits playing the game with the tiny z button that isnt in a natural position. nintendo needs to merge with playstation and take out x-box.

I'm reserving judgment on the DS till E3 or I at least see some pictures of it.
Nintendo has made some very mixed decisions:
GOOD - $100
BAD - Not catering to older gamers
BAD - Not supporting online play
BAD - Lack of RPGs
BAD - Lack of Fighters
I don't play sports games, so I can't comment, but there are plenty of them. I heartily enjoy my NFL Blitz.
Nintendo's first party software always rocks, but they need to do something revolutionary, besides the Zelda, Mario and Metroid sequels. Mario64 revolutionized 3D platformers, and nintendo has to lead the way to the next big thing.
And I like my Virtual Boy. :)

Its a somewhat like what Sony is doing with PSX.
Not at all. PSX had a massive a target audience. This "mystery" product appeals to all of 7 people in America and Japan combined. (That's the official population of conjoined twins who play video games.)
And what's not stellar about GameCube? Maybe the fact that Nintendo claims to be "innovative" and groundbreaking, yet all they've come out with is half-assed revisions of previous games (Smash Bros. Melee, Mario Kart Double Dash, Zelda: Windwaker, Rogue Leader/Rebel Strike, and perhaps the biggest diappointment Mario Sunshine). Secondly, everything JustJon mentioned, as well as the lack of sports games. I've also noticed a repeating pattern of game cancellations for GameCube only, while the PS2 and X-Box projects continue. All too often, games come out (good ones and bad ones) on every platform EXCEPT GameCube. While Nintendo claimed to recapture audiences after the abysmal N64, it's undeniable that not much changed in the GameCube era.

They don't need to. Gamecube outsold X-Box last year, and there is currently a larger installed base for Gamecube. They are beating Microsoft. It might not seem that way with all the money Microsoft is throwing around, but that's what's happening.
And, BTW, Metroid Prime wipes the floor with Halo.
Zelda: Windwaker
There is nothing half-assed about Wind Waker.

Well yes, if you're going to compare every Gamecube game to previous Nintendo classics then they're going to dissapoint.
I agree that Mario Sunshine was a HUGE disapointment if you compare it to other Mario games. But, if you just think of it as a platformer there is not a better one for PS2 or Xbox. And Wind Waker was fantastic, I don't know what you're talking about.
Nintendo's former systems set people's hopes way to high. Of course you're not going to make a better game than A Link to the Past or Ocarina of Time. Obviously, nothing is going to top Mario 64.
As far as innovation I see Mario 128 refining the game industry. Its been in development for way too long to suck.

As weird as it sounds, it also sounds kind've cool. I wish would could get some sort've a mock image of what it will look like.

cube outsells because its cheaper. thats about it. my roommate at school had x-box and i was impressed with it. before i played the system on a steady basis i hated it, and in my heart of hearts i still do want to hate it. but comparing the playability of soul calibur and deadly alliance on x-box and and cube, x-box is by far better. and knights of the old republic was a friggin amazing game, best rpg i played since ffx. i love prime, it was the reason i bought my cube, but the fact that halo was multiplayer makes it a better buy as far as infinite fun factor goes. if prime was multiplayer there would be no comparison. im looking for a game on cube that knocks my socks off the way prime did.
and for the record link in wind waker looked like a fag. sorry samus looked like she had bigger balls than link. im not saying the game was bad, im saying link did. horrible animation.

Prime 2 comes out this summer with multiplayer.
And I have KOTOR and Halo for my PC.
And I liked cel shaded Zelda. Link is a child and he looked like a child. It was probably the prettiest game of 2003.
And what was better on x-box than cube for SC2? If it's the controller, I didn't mind it too much once I got used to it. If the controller really bothered me, I'd buy the Namco joystick they released.
