It is against the policy of ronfez.net to allow the posting of racist material. Any post deemed racist by the mods may result in a warning or banning. In severe cases, a banning may occur without any warnings at the discretion of the mods.

monster, I know the thread to which you are referring. the initial post was not over the line, it was the followup responses and "witty" other posts.

If you say "Asians are bad drivers" or "Jews are money hungry," old stereotype, but there has to be a reason you posted it.

If it is racist humor, you have to know where to draw the line. Ultimately, the mods are the arbiters of whether or not it is, so if you are in doubt, you may ask one of us.

To call someone a "chink bastard" or "fucking kike" or so on, there better be a damn good reason you wrote it or we'll be seein' ya.

Of course, each is taken on a case by case basis and if you're not sure, feel free to contact a mod and ask. All of our contact info is in our profiles.

The joke was deleted because it was that awful.

The joke had nothing to do with MLK himself. And, given that the thread was started out of RESPECT and TRIBUTE to the man and his legacy, any jokes at his expense would not have been tolerated, racist or not. But the jokes that were deleted in that thread were just generally racist in nature. MLK wasn't the focus. Nobody made any jokes about MLK.

If those other men are attacked and mocked solely on the basis of their race, religion, etc., it wouldn't be acceptable. If they're criticized because of their politics and political actions, why WOULDN'T that be allowed? You're comparing apples and Toyatas.

There are not threads about the other men you listed that are even similar. If someone wants to start a thread that's objectively critical of MLK (Over, say, his infidelity) there's no problem with that. He's not some untouchable saint.

But these threads aren't, nor were they ever a problem. The men you listed are actively criticized/praised for what they say and do on this board because they are active political/social figures. Making jokes about people is fine. Making racist humor at the expense of anyone is not. Calling Bush an idiot? Fine. Calling MLK an idiot? Hey, go for it. Calling MLK a "stupid nigger"? Unacceptable.

Like I said, the line seems clear to me. It should be to everyone else.

This can't be that hard to follow. A joke about MLK Jr. on his birthday, although possibly in bad taste, might be fine, provided that it's not a racist joke.

In other words, you are within the bounds of what is proper on this board to skewer a public figure, but you cannot use that as an excuse to use racist humor.

I mean I've seen several times where the Italians and Irish, for exapmle, have gone back and forth at each other in posts, and at times it got kinda brutal, but it was taken in jest by mostly everybody and the mods never had to intervene.

Just out of curiousity, why was my reply in the "I have a dream" thread deleted? I'm not saying it's necessarily funny, but what is offensive about it that it had to be removed? I'd like to know where the line is? No, we need people to utilize some common sense and for them to just stop acting like assholes.

The board is not some private club where people can just insult whatever they want and everyone else will just laugh it off and think it's no big deal and it's sealed off from the rest of the world. We want other people to show up, and we want it to be as inclusive as possible. Why does the desire seem to be of so many to insult as many different people as possible, as often as possible?

It's a place for general public gathering. Treat it and the other members like you would in a similar situation in "real life." That's it.

Is that really too much to ask?

Not everything has to be a battle. Not everything has to be some big "struggle". Not everything has to be negative here. Just use some common sense and think of the people around you. The board is NOT here just for you.

Why can't you just follow simple rules?....why can't anyone for that matter?. The Mods & Admins here do what they see fit and what they think is in the best interest for the board, that is why they were chosen to do what they do.

It's really disheartening to see so many people standing up against this. As if it would take an insane amount of judgement to decipher what IS and ISN'T a tasteful joke and when and where it should be applied.

I think people take advantage of the comradery here. What i mean to say is....i think people don't presume that ANYONE reading a post here could possibley be offended because we're all "friends" and that we

I guess we should just make this a utopian wet dream of politically correct discussion and never stray beyond it. I get it that this is a private board and people need to follow rules and whatnot, but I also believe that we as "active members" here should be able to be adult enough to be able to laugh and joke at ourselves. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm not racist in the least, however I do love racial and ethnic jokes. My reason being that I get it that we're here and we have to deal with each other. The only way we will ever be able to move to the next level as a society is when we stop being so serious and learn to laugh at each other. There definitely are issues that the races in general need to resolve, though the first thing I think we need to do is lighten up and accept one another.

I can certainly understand if something is written that hurts someone, but there are some things that are banned and deleted and just baffle me as to why it would be taken down. I'm not talking about my reply, but in general.

I don't know about the rest here, but I used to look forward to coming to this site after work and during breaks to come and laugh because there was just so much creative humor and different personalities that it really made the board one of the best places to go for a pick me up. I definitely don't feel that anymore. I feel like there's way too many hands in the pot and everything that is said is WAY too over-analyzed. I can go through hundreds of old topics from 1 or 2 years ago and find topics that would today be banned and deleted, but yet were classics back in the day.
I'm not knocking the mods and the work they do, but rather the process of what stays, what gets locked, or deleted.

I've always believed that when people feel they are free to speak their minds that the best creativity flows, and it did on this board at one point.

It was a really shitty way to get your point across. It does demonstrate pretty well our problem. You make a racist comment merely as a joke, but it comes off as much worse than you intended, and as offensive to others.

We're not saying that nothing racial can be discussed. There's a line between racial humor and racist statements. Racial discussions by R&F by and large fall unto the former camp. Most people can tell the difference and are able to tell what is appropriate. This thread was not meant for those people.

We're not saying that nothing racial can be discussed. There's a line between racial humor and racist statements. Racial discussions by R&F by and large fall unto the former camp. Most people can tell the difference and are able to tell what is appropriate. This thread was not meant for those people.

Anything else is pretty much fair game. If people can't leave out those few, overly negative issues of their posts, they shouldn't be here. It's not. None of us are, so there's your biggest mistake. We're just attempted to clamp down on some particuarly ugly posts that have been popping up that serve no purpose but to be hateful towards people. Again, if you can't see the difference between people arguing over sports teams and racist posts, I don't know what more I can do.

What we're posting about here has only happened a lot RECENTLY. It's somethign we're trying to knock off BEFORE it becomes a huge problem. It's not a "crusade" we're trying to "champion". It's an issue that came up recently and we're trying to deal with it.

Fear Factor was a fake promo for a TV show that spoofed Fear Factor. Instead of getting in dangerous and/or disgusting situations, the contestants had to get is "gay" situations with Fez to win. I really took that more as Fez poking fun of his on-air persona and not as an anti-gay bit.

Also, if I recall correctly, the Andy Dick bit was mostly R&F making fun of Andy Dick's last name. Juvenile? Sure. Anti-gay? Hardly.

I've been reading this board for awhile and I know I am not the most active participant but I happen to agree with Mojo's plea for common sense. I happen to like some racial humor from time to time,if its written properly. However, everyone knows where the line stands. Adults should have a sense of decency when it regards others' feelings.
I also agree with Angel Amy though. I know this is contradicitive but I think that board censorship has been too high lately. I've seen threads that have been obviously written just to be silly, locked.
I don't agree with complete free speech on the board however. There are consequences. We should all be aware of ourselves and consider what our thoughts mean to others.
In other words, I believe that a compromise should be met concerning censorship. Perhaps we can have memorandums and votes on threads that we feel are offensive. Maybe another board section for questionable threads. We must pursue common sense but retain our sense of humor and our outlet for relaxed humor.

The problem, in all seriousness, is that I don't think some people do understand the difference between racial humor and racist humor. On Mr. Show, David Cross (who I believe is Jewish) did a skit called Hitler: The Musical in which he put on a little mustache and sang and it was hysterical. There is a HUGE difference, then, between that and telling jokes where you call a Jewish person a bad name. I'm not saying this has happened on the board, I'm just saying that I've unfortunately witnessed these things in life (I used to work at a restaurant/bar for 8 years and you encounter many types of people). The people who would make jokes like this would sometimes cite Howard Stern or O 'N A or Norton or even Ron & Fez and would think they were being funny bar "shock jocks." But never would O 'N A or Ron & Fez come out and say racial slurs so bluntly without any context from which they were being satirical. Some people truly don't know the difference. If you're confused as to what you can "get away with" and what will "put you on a vacation" I think the choice is clear- simply stay away from humor involving race. If people don't know that the issue of race is such a hotbed issue in America then you really need to go out in the world and talk to people of different backgrounds and understand why it's still a big deal. People have to chill with the censorship-flag waving. If I'm around someone who says the "n" word or anything else racist, I get pissed and tell them not to talk like that around me. Same fucking thing's happening here. If you want to tell your racist jokes, go stand outside a 7-11 with your buddies and smoke bad cigarettes and yuck it up about different ethnic groups (except Swedes god damn you, oh how I do love those peple so). If you're gonna do shock humor- great. I, for one, love it! But have some common sense. I was gonna make a Columbine joke in HarryManAss's thread "How Many Times A Week Do You Go To The Gym" thread because he mentioned that he wanted to get in good shape by april (which happens to be the 5th anniversary of Columbine and, from what I gather, Harry's a high school student). But at that particular time I didn't feel I could write it in a way that was not too over-the-top and insensitive. I'm not saying I wouldn't make a Klebold joke in the future but for whatever reason I didn't feel like I could say anything at that moment that wasn't simply crude; so I just didn't post (and I'm not saying I should be canonized for this...though I do think I should be canonized for some of my ping-pong shots but that's between me and the Big Man [Ralph Biggum- U.S. Amatuer Ping-Pong Commissioner]). I hope I don't have to post this seriously again 'cause to just post this I had to undergo high amounts of electro-shock treatment by a certain Doctor Scuzz and since when did operating rooms move into the basements of Jiffy Lubes anyway?

Read my examples again. Yes. In theory, this is applying for all people, and religion, too. People like to jump on Catholics for the kid-touching stuff here, but if someone started a serious thread about how, say, the church changed their life, and people brought the jokes and Catholic-bashing into that, it wouldn't be tolerated. It was just the MLK and other "why do black people..." threads that happened to be the breaking points.

Who said anything about telling mods or admins or whoever how to run the board? A mod makes a topic up about an issue on the board. I didn't see the thread locked, so this means to me as a discussion board "active member" I and anyone else here has the right to comment. Why is it is wrong for those of us who may have issues with however the board is run to have the right to comment and ask questions? Is it so far out of the realm of discussion? If that is the case then post the topic, make it sticky and lock it. Otherwise if the topic is open I think any one here on this board is entitled to their opinion on anything that goes on with this board, the topics, the way things are run, etc. That doesn't mean I or anyone are being critical of the mods, but rather being inquisitive, since this is after all a discussion board.

As a general rule of thumb, it never was. Mods themselves have had threads locked/moved for racist stuff. Looks to me like the mods may have made a mistake with that particular one. I've always said we screw up plenty of times and people sometimes need to point things out, even if some mods are already involved. At the same time, people called fatty out. Lately, it's often felt like I've been the only one in threads trying to talk down stuff like that.

What can I say? We're not perfect. We can only try. Something got by in that case. Does it negate anything in this thread? No. That was then, this is now.

These are by no means the rules, just how I feel. If anyone reads this try not to take it to heart.

1) Putting a group of people down for things they cannot control is never acceptable anywhere in life. Try to say some of the things you post on here to people in real life, and you'll be doing a lot of backpeddling.

2) There is a huge difference between words that you may feel convey the same message. For example, you may use two different ways to say the term 'black person.' One is fine while the other one puts them down without warrant. That being said, I think I need to add some humor in the words of David Chapelle:

"I was in Mississippi at a restaurant and I go to order some food and I say to the guy "I would like to have....." He jumps in and says "The Chicken!" I could not believe it...this man was absolutely right. I said to him 'How'd you know I was gonna get some chicken?' he said "Come on buddy...as soon as you walked in the door everyone knew you were gonna get some chicken...It is no secret down here that blacks and chickens are quite fond of one another" Then I finally understood what he was saying. That was upsetting to me. I wasn't ready to hear that shit. All these years I thought I liked chicken because its delicious, turns out I'm genetically predisposed to liking chicken...cuz i'm black...I got no say in the matter...."

May not translate to funny on here or have anything to do with the subject but that, to me, is racial humor

3) On the subject of censorship. Not many people read the rules before they sign up. But, this is true of a lot of things in life. Contracts for example. Nonetheless once you sign you have to adhere to those rules. Deal with it and take your offensive material elsewhere. There are very few places that even try to maintain a level of integrity and I appreciate the fact that this site does.



But if something comes up that is offensive, I choose to ignore it. Maybe thats just me avoiding the problem but it works for me. This is the kind of thread I rarely reply to but I felt the need.

You want to know how to conduct yourselves on the board?

Ask yourself...would Ron say this on the show? Would Fez say this on the show?

I would say going through the threads we've locked/deleted/banned over the last couple of weeks, almost NONE of these jokes would've made it on the show, for the simple reason that they're WAY too obviously over the top and edgy for the sake of being edgy. Look..Ron & Fez are subtle...the jokes are easy on the ears and rarely offend...they carefully tiptoe the line but never really upset the balance...that's why they don't get fucking kicked off the air like O&A and why I don't really consider them to be "shock jocks".

If you can't understand the distinction between a blatantly obvious racist joke and a funny quip poking at the differences between the races than you have no place here.

I really won't miss those who want to leave because of this. This is not what we are about. I don't need strangers coming to this board and seeing KKK clip art and leave because they think we're a group of bigots out to lambast the colored.

WE ARE THE RON & FEZ FAN BASE. Let's try to show the world that we're a group of civilized human beings who understand what good comedy is and try to practice it everyday.

First off:
We were attempting to clear out the thread of anything that wasn't along with what Wadd was trying to do with it in the first place
If that's going to be the standard for threads, you're going to be "clearing out" a lot of posts.
Isn't that the point of messageboards? The free-form, stream-of-conciousness, see where it goes discussion?

NOBODY IS SAYING "OFF-COLOR HUMOR" IS BANNED.
RACIST HUMOR IS NOT ALLOWED.
THE TWO ARE NOT THE SAME.
If you can't tell the difference, you're either choosing not to or you're truly hopeless.
This is really just an opinion, though you state it as fact. There are some who would argue that racist humor is just off-color, as well as some who would argue that what you'd deem off-color is just as offensive as what you'd deem racist. People draw their lines in different places. However, it's to be acknowledged that as a mod you (and by extension the other mods who have to take up your cause and you theirs) have the right to run things based on your lines. But don't pretend you know the universal acceptance levels, or that anyone who doesn't share that opinion is automatically hopeless.

Is it possible that some people are wondering not about their specific ability to be racist, but a bigger picture of what might be banned next? Or just a desire to discuss the freedom to post here in general? Or maybe some people believe in the ability (necessity?) of the community to suitably deal with problems like these? (ie. a racist poster being called out, insulted, whatever, by everyone else)

In this thread we've heard a lot from Mojo and Mikey (with a little JustJon and that last Jeff post thrown in). I'm curious why the other mods haven't expressed their views (supporting or dissenting) with what seems to be a very important board issue. Well, maybe less why not, but what they think.

It's very easy to say "These are the rules, deal" or "If you don't like it, leave" because they're techincally true. But, if everybody leaves what do you have? A place with 8 mods and a lot of really well-followed rules. So, obviously the people who run this "private" board have a vested interest in balancing the rules in a way that make people interested in and keep people entertained by the board. That said, a debate like this one is a perfectly valid and healthy expression of, by, and for the members. It gives the mods a sense of where their members are and how they feel about the board, and it gives the members a chance to see how their fellow members look at the board and them. I have to look questioningly upon anyone who would look to squash such a debate. I abide by the rules, but I don't see anything wrong with talking about them either.

Nobody does. But again, people are assuming we're talking about some fine line here that we're going to be constantly watching and any one tiny slip over and BAM!!! People are banned. This is not the case.

There are relatively few instances of people really going overboard on this topic. Most of the posters here haven't even come close. There had just been an unusual "rush" in racial-related humor that would not be acceptable in "normal" social situations. As I've said before, this board should be seen as a place like that...a public meeting place. And as such, people should, by instinct, just adhere to certain social decencies and plain old common sense. Since nobody (Well, Mike the T did) really seemed to be standing up to any of the really over-the-top racial stuff in the last few days, it seemed SOME kind of plan had to be set. It's not ironclad, and I'll be the first it's hard to define and that I do NOT know the answers. But, I'm sorry if you disagree, I simply do not see how just allowing people to go off on some racial tirade that's way over ANY line as being beneficial to this board or the people here in ANY way at all.

The point is, this ISN'T something we want to use to "trap" or "get" any posters. Along what you said, we don't want to ban everyone and end up with no members. But at the same time, I don't see allowing the stuff that this thread is hopefully addressing could possibly make new members feel welcome.

Time will see how this pans out. It's not a perfect decision, but we'll see what we can do. There's at least two sides to every situation, and I'd be a fool to always assume mine is the right one.

I don't disagree that part of your job is to regulate someone who is disrupting the board. I believe that we probably disagree on where the line of such disruption is, or possibly on what methods should be used to reign it in. However, I also believe I rightly acknowledged your authority to set that line. (as well as our ability to discuss to influence your decision)
I didn't get the impression from earlier posts that you, Mikey, and some others understood that the setting of the line came from opinion. I saw a lot of "we all know what's too far" kind of stuff. You've clarified that you realize that there's room for differences of opinon here. That alone improves my impression of the decision-making process.

To address your point, I would see less of a need for "discipline" of someone who posted a "tirade" if it was a singular event and generally on topic than I would of someone who was running around posting tirades ad nauseum in many different threads, whether on topic or not. I think such a singular event could be easily ignored, or better still, debated with opposition in the normal context of the messageboard. The other is much more disruptive.

Nothing would be satisfying than the initial purpose of this thread to turn out to be unecessary and something we rarely, if ever, have to turn to.

As much as people seem to want to complain about this thread, none of the mods really had the idea we'd have to be coming down on people left and right, nor do we want to. It was just an issue that had always been a tiny blurb in the FAQ and seemed due for a little reminder. Almost all of the people clamoring the loudest here have done little to nothing to even warrent us looking twice their way, much less coming down on them over the issue of this thread.

i never liked the censorship on this board

i have always felt that banning people just because you dont agree with their views on something is dumb and unfair.

no one should sit there and worry about what they say because there is a possibility of either getting banned or deleted or edited or censored in any way. this place is supposed to be a place you can go to to get things off your chest. just because some things not everyone would like to hear, doesnt mean we should just ignore that there are some people out there that feel this way.

most of the time these things are said for comedic value only. you cant sit there and tell me that most of the people on this board dont have a dark sense of humor because that is bullshit and everyone knows it.



I agree with this entire thing!

I am in total agreement with this. I feel it is very unfair. And my my - so many of us here have become Mods in the past few months or so. This is seemingly analogous to those who seek employment as security guards, the main attraction being that they get to wear a neato uniform complete with epaulets and interestingly creased hat. Let's not forget the shoulder-mounted walkie-talkie.

Except here, they get to carry a gun. And they use it with abandon.

Say a person was unfairly and unjustly and wrongly banned, for life. Who said anything about telling mods or admins or whoever how to run the board? A mod makes a topic up about an issue on the board. I didn't see the thread locked, so this means to me as a discussion board "active member" I and anyone else here has the right to comment. Why is it is wrong for those of us who may have issues with however the board is run to have the right to comment and ask questions? Is it so far out of the realm of discussion? If that is the case then post the topic, make it sticky and lock it. Otherwise if the topic is open I think any one here on this board is entitled to their opinion on anything that goes on with this board, the topics, the way things are run, etc. That doesn't mean I or anyone are being critical of the mods, but rather being inquisitive, since this is after all a discussion board.

And I agree with reef on this too. Make no mistake - I am not "for" racism, it just happens to be that the posts that both reef and his companion made happen to be here, and it is a joy to read them.

What a shame it is that Mojopin himself just doesn't get it.

Oh, folks: Don't be surprised if I am also put on "vacation" or banned for life - these people are very exclusionary, it seems. Or am I wrong.

The point is, this ISN'T something we want to use to "trap" or "get" any posters.

Again - I am not talking about racism per se, for I agree that this has no place here. But regarding "trapping" and "getting" posters - this is exactly what is and has been going on.

Along what you said, we don't want to ban everyone and end up with no members.

God no. Just the ones you don't like. Creative and entertaining writing be damned - if someone is deemed "unfit" by a long-timer crony here (even if many others love that person) they are Out of here.

Time will see how this pans out. It's not a perfect decision, but we'll see what we can do. There's at least two sides to every situation, and I'd be a fool to always assume mine is the right one.

1) 2nd Chance, you were told our rules. Had you abided by them even after being removed from the board, we'd consider your reinstatement. Harrassing us doesn't help your case.

2) We have always said that our decisions and rules are open to discussion. All you have to do is contact one of us. These discussions sometimes turn into cluster fucks (see some of the above replies), which is why we encourage a PM, IM or e-mail so that it can be discussed in the Staff Room. We could have just annouced the new policy, locked the thread and locked all threads questioning it. We didn't and we don't.

3) All we're asking is for people to be civil towards one another. If you want to sit around and attack people all day, I'll give you a few other boards to visit. That's something neither we nor R&F have ever been about.
