The only way to get ahead is to live within your means. Avoid debt at all costs and pay off your credit cards without carrying a balance. If you have money earning 3% in a savings account and you could use it to pay off a credit card thats sapping you for 16% interest, and you dont use that money to pay off your debt, then your losing money. It took me a while to believe that and until I accepted it, I was always in a hole.

technically it is, according to boiler room. having a benz and not $5 to put gas in it. ie, living beyond your means.
though there are plenty of people that live beyond their means to feed/ cloth their children b/c the work a shit job, lack an education/ skills to have any sort of career mobility, etc...
it's when you start to get extravagent that you run into trouble and guys like terror come knocking at your door

It's an older slang term than that, dating back to the late 1800's, and was applicable to whites and blacks for very different reasons. It's pretty easy to gather what it could mean for either race given what was going on in America at the time.
I never saw "Boiler Room", (I saw it the first time around when it was "Glengarry Glen Ross") and wasn't aware that it could possibly still be in use. Sadly, I'm really not all that surprised I was wrong.

i've tried to find the origin of the definition with no luck. and i'm imagining in the 1800s, that if it applied to blacks, it was b/c they were slave/ plantation owners.
i don't remember catching it in gg gr, but even i modern terms, it applies the same to both races.

It applied to the blacks you described, but often just ANY black who came into decent (Relatively speaking) amounts of money in post-Reconstruction/Civil War America, or were perceived as trying to live "rich" - ie - "white," so not even necessarily beyond their means, just trying to live better than "normal" blacks.
It was also used towards whites who favored hiring blacks in what were seen as jobs that were more "suited" for whites. The white owners were making their money off of blacks in "white jobs," so they were looked at as being "nigger rich."
And no, the term wasn't used in "GGR". I was just saying I didn't see "Boiler Room" because everything in the trailers (And most of the people I knew who saw it) just said the thing was a "young, hip" update of "GGR".

Yeah, I don't know which role of his was better, when he played the retard in the movie with Juliette Lewis, or the one where he was the retard on "Friends".
Oh, sure, "nigger rich" is fine. It simply demands to be a part of everyone's daily conversation. Silly me.

it's just a term. shit, if you google it, a post i made a while ago comes up #5. if you can come up with a more pc term for spending beyond your means, i welcome it. shit, ludacris had a million dollar necklace stolen recently. why would a person "need" a piece of jewelry that costs more than most peoples' homes. it's not right, but people who come from poverty (usually minorities) spend that much money on something like that? again, it's wrong to sterotype, but i thik it's established that sterotypes are rooted in some truth.
just like whitey being able to buy his way out of any situation. a sterotype, but true.

Yeah, but there's no moronic term like "whitey justice" or something.
A stereotype is a stereotype. Most of them are true somewhere along the line in some way, shape or form. The idea that this thread is based on is a legit one. The Roots mocked it pretty fucking hilariously in one of their videos. I just don't feel the need to use a blatantly stupid term like "nigger rich" to describe it.
If someone wants to use it all they want, hey, great, fine. I have no wish to stop them. I hope it fulfills something deep within them and makes their life a wonderfully better place, because apparently it's THAT important and necessary to them.
There's absolutely no need for that term to exist, period. People can try and pass it off, but whatever...that's the bottom line.
Someone wants to make fun of something for living like a dumbass and pimpin' it out while actually being broke as a joke? Go nuts with it. They deserve it. I just have no clue why it "has" to go to that next level. If it's that important for people to be able to use a term like that, let 'em knock themselves out doing so.
Hopefully literally.
Eh, who cares? Everyone will just chalk it up to "PC" and not give a shit about what I'm saying. I don't think I even listen to myself anymore. So if anyone is going to give me shit for being too uptight, don't bother.

abso-fucking-lutely true mojo. but we are human/ retards and are never likely to progress beyond that. lets not put too much stock in turning humanity around.
my feeling, as long as your not pulling someone behind a pickup truck, it's all "cool." in the sense of hanging out with rednecks: you tolerate their ignorance b/c they're not acting on it. but "normal" people should be able to differentiate b/twn what is "right" and "wrong." words are words, but things like "patty wagon" are still in comon use

But truth be told-- they're up to their ass in debt and living way beyond their means.
My folks did that - for my entire life I thought we had it pretty well. Nice, big house in a nice secure neighborhood in the nice suburbs of Alexandria. I had everything I wanted - they had everything they wanted.
Starting w/ Junior High, I began going to private schools with the likes of Sonny Jergeson's kid, or the son of "Burke" of "Burke & Herbert" (a local bank)...later, as documented elsewhere, I went to a boarding school with Johnny Puke...
Fast forward, three years ago (after things slowly sliding down hill), at the age of 70, my folks filed for bankruptcy, had to sell the house and most of their stuff, and move half way across the country. Turns out my entire life they lived beyond their means.
It's much more complicated (naturally) than that; in recent years there was an ex-business parter, and a law suit, and frozen assets; and bad, bad decisions (if there was a decision to be made, odds are Dad would make the wrong one); and a business deal that took over 10 years to see to fruition, and when it finally happened, it was worth 1/4 of what it was suppose to, and there were numerous people already waiting for a piece of it - ugly, ugly stuff. I hope none of you have to see your parents go through something like that.
