Thats nice joint.

I guess my parents would have to be there too. Both my mom and my dad. They helped me during tough times, and they loved me when I was stupid.

You had a good answer with your dad, why'd you have to go and ruin it and put Vince McMahon?

Johnny Cash has been my hero for a long time. Im reading his autobiography now and it has some unbelievable stories in it. Not just about the music but the stories of him growing up and the ones about his family are really great.

I have one but they change daily, or weekly.

This week is a lady I read about who is back to waitressing because the medical benefits are done and shes got a kid to support ya know? But it's tough to waitress with the severe hand and arm scarring she endures because she survived the Rhode Island fire that killed 100+ in that fucking club when Great White played. She worked there. At least her hair has grown back enough now that it's her own hair, so the stares aren't as bad, or as often, she says.

There ya Go. Hero.

I have many, but before I mention them, I will point out that most of those above are not real heroes.
Perhaps worthy of credit, respect or admiration, but not heroes.

To me, a hero is one who acts in a selfless, courageous way to aid or save others, at the risk of his or her own life. This is an act or actions done when the person does not have to act and would not be criticized for failing to do so.
There is a book out now called The Encyclopedia of American Military Heroes by I believe Bruce Norton. In the introduction of the book is a good definition of what a hero is.
I also am dismayed that somehow, America now does a poor job of remembering her heroes.

One who died recently is Raymond G. Davis. He died a few months ago and deserved more recognition than he got.
To my knowledge, Ray Davis is the only Marine in history to have earned every medal for battlefield bravery this country awards.
Back in, oh, December, 1951, as I recall, the 1st Marine Division had driven deeply into eastern North Korea. When other U.N. forces in the west were driven back, the !st Marine Division had to pull back as well.
They were surrounded by at least 5 North korean and Chinese divisions in rocky, rugged mountains. There was only one way out, along a narrow road, and everybody knew it.
There came a time where a company of Marines on a mountain top were surrounded and being cut to pieces by a superior force, and all would probably die without relief.
Ray Davis quickly organized a force of Marines and led them up about 4 or 5 miles through this dificult terrain, up the mountain, at night.
They didn't do wind chill back then, but the temperatures were around 40 below zero. Davis led, and I mean led the attack and saved the day. you see, that mountain top was critical. Losing it would mean that 2 regiments of Marines would be separated and unable to assist each other and very likely destroyed.
For this, Ray Davis recieved the Medal of Honor.
I had the pleasure of knowing Ray Davis.
I shall have more later...

My mother.

In 1972, when my brother was 17 and had run away from home for the 10,000th time, Mom got a call from his girlfriend saying she was pregnant and needed to get an abortion.

The girl, who was in 12th grade, and the oldest of a large catholic family, couldn't have said anything to her folks. Mom talked it over with my father (he gets some points too, but this was really Mom's call), and she not only paid for it, but she took her down to the clinic.

While progressive, Mom is still from a Baptist background, so this was not an easy decision for her.

My brother didn't take the news very well when he called in from "the road" (during his years running away, he was stabbed, robberd, shacked up with some rich girl in a Los Angeles bungalo, and was arrested a number of times and places, including Texas and Florida, where he served time on a chain gang). Mom said that when he finally came home, he was different. She, naturally, blames herself to some degree, while the truth is it was the drugs that had changed him.

One year later, Mom received a call from the girl, who wanted to thank Mom - she was able to go to college, and go on with her life. It helped Mom, I know.

Still, it has to be tough - knowing that there was a potential grandchild that would be 30ish now (although, there is some evidence to suggest my brother spread his sead elsewhere during his travels).

I've always respected her, but when she told me the story, about 10 years ago as we passed a group of pro-lifers (most of whom were Men! PAH!) outside of a clinic, I saw her in a new, completely selfless light.

Here's another hero of mine. I have said before how I think it is a disgrace that America no longer remembers her heroes like she once did.
One of 12 kids growing up on a small Kansas farm in the 20s and 30s, "Silent Lew" had it tough. Somehow he managed to get in and work his way through college at Colorado State. About 6 feet tall, he had a huge barrel chest and was such a star as captain of the football team, he was recruited by the pros (and when was the last time you heard of a lineman being captain of a football team?).
He was also captain of the wrestling team and swimming team, editor of two campus publications, a leader in the ROTC program he was in, as well as student body president. He graduated with high honors with a degree in chemistry.
Eschewing a career in football, he went in the Marine Corps and was trained by "Chesty" Puller, and was commissioned in 1936.
He performed well in China and was seen as a rising star. Recruited early into Edson's Raiders, an elite unit, he earned the Silver star on Tulagi and went from a young captain to leutennant colonel in less than 15 months.
There are many, many stories about his battlefield exploits that would be hard to believe in a work of fiction.
One of the most well known took place almost exactly 60 years ago on New Britain. Fighting in the swamps and jungle of this hell hole was especially tough. They were getting 15 or 16 inches of rain each day.
Leading a battalion (and I do mean leading, as he always led from the front, they suddenly found themselves under fire from all directions as they had walked into a complex of over 30 reenforced bunkers with interlocking fields of fire. This was the hill they had been looking for, the key terrain feature that the enemy had orders to defend at all costs. Snipers were in the trees above as well as behind them. Men were dropping right and left.
Under heavy fire and unable to take out the bunkers with their light weapons, the Marines were in big trouble.
"Silent Lew" (so called because in tense situations, his voice got kinda low and even more steady, plus he was not verbose) and his runner sprinted back a ways to a 37 mm cannon whose crew had been shot up pretty bad, and was still taking much fire.
They grabbed the field piece and began rasslin' it forward. They became the enemie's primary target as they pushed and pulled the cannon up the hill.
Needing help, "Silent Lew" cried out: "Help me, men!" and several jumped up and were cut down immediately, but a few made it and helped get the thing in position and to bring up ammo.
They fired, clearing out jungle camouflage hiding the bunkers and they fired taking them out. Again and again, they'd push and pull the cannon up a bit farther, "Silent Lew" the most exposed to enemy fire, out in front, pulling the thing forward. Marines helping him were shot, but still he inspired others to come to his aid.
Eventually they took Aogori Ridge, as it was called then. "Silent Lew" dislocated both of his shoulders severely, but continued to lead.
"Silent Lew" Walt was reccomended for the Medal of Honor for his actions and recieved the Navy Cross. The hill was renamed Walt's Ridge in his honor.
Again on Pelelieu he was put in for the medal of honor and recieved the Navy Cross there as well.
An amazing leader, Walt could inspire one to perform way above one's percieved abilities.
I have talked to many who fought alongside him and they all said the same 2 things: 1)"He was all over the battlefield", and 2) "It's a shame he didn't get the Medal of Honor".
I knew him personally for many, many years. He was not only an inspirational leader and as fine a warrior as you will find, he was also an extraordinarily honorable man.
Lew Walt was a man of great character who would stand up to any superior, including the president, if it meant saving the lives of his Marines and the ruin of his career.
He was a man of principle, a man of integrity and virtue.
He always took care of the little guy and was known as a "grunt's Marine".
He retired around 1971 as assistant c
