North Shore Animal League, <a href="http://wcs.org/">Wildlife Conservation Society (Bronx Zoo etc.)</a>, <a href="http://www.wwf.org/">World Wildlife Fund</a>, <a href="http://www.outdoors.org/" Appalachian Mountain Club</a>, <a href="http://www.accessfund.org/">The Access Fund</a>, <a href="http://www.gunksclimbers.org/">Gunks Climbers Coalition</a>, <a href="http://www.savethegunks.com/">Save the Gunks</a>, <a href="http://www.mohonkpreserve.org/">Mohonk Preserve</a>, <a href="http://www.sierraclub.org/">The Sierra Club</a>, <a href="http://nature.org/">The Nature Conservancy</a>, and of course my <a href="http://www.brown.edu"> college</a>, and my <a href="http://www.dalton.org">high school</a>, although the last two don't really count.
I don't expect most of those to be of much interest to board members, although the Access Fund and the Save the Ridge campaign are really important to me since I'm a big climber (or used to be, three times a week up at the gunks, at least, until I moved out to Long Island a few years ago), but I would really encourage everyone to think long and hard about whether or not they have even a few dollars to spare for the WCS; zoos across the country but particularly the Bronx Zoo (because it's in NY and like all of NY's money is now going to anti-terrorism type things rather than more "cultural" type things) are REALLY strapped for cash. It's such and important zoo for research and conservation, yeah, but even moreso it's such an important part of New York and its history; seriously, is there a single person who grew up in NY who didn't take a class trip there? Who has never been there? But they're so strapped for cash that there's been talk of shutting down the Prospect Park Zoo and the Queens Zoo entirely, and anyone who's been to the Coney Island Aquarium and has been to any other aquarium in the world (for example the New England Aquarium in Boston) knows how utterly disgraceful it is. I took a tour of the aquarium with the director a couple of years ago; they simply don't have the money for even the most basic repairs - for example, some of the tanks when they leak, they leak onto concrete floors, and the floors are entirely cracked and ruined. They need to be replaced, but they don't have the money to do it. It's really awful.
The North Shore Animal League is another one that I always donate to; I've gotten a dog and a cat from there and I think it's really really wonderful what they do. They really need money to do it. My dog was about 4 years old when I adopted her; she had heartworm disease and they had gotten her from a shelter down south somewhere (never found out where) where she was going to be put to sleep (the NSAL has programs where they go to shelters all over the country and pick up animals who are about to be put to sleep). Heartworm disease, if anyone has ever encountered it, is REALLY expensive to treat; thousands of dollars. The NSAL paid for all of her treatment. It actually took her about a year to finally get over it (and it was awful, it was practically a year where she wasn't allowed to run or get excited at all, not allowed to bark, had to be crated so she couldnt run around the house while I was gone and strain her heart...nevermind constant blood tests and shots, plus she had to get treatments twice where she was hospitalized for a few nights each time) but she's over it now, thanks to them. It's so sad to think that if they hadn't picked her up, she would have been put to sleep. A lot of veterinarians donate time at the hospital at the NSAL; actually the first vet I took my dog to (in Setauket) after the NSAL vets cleared her of her heartworms kind of looked at her funny when I broght her in and asked me where I'd gotten her. Turns out she'd treated her at the NSAL! Actually now, even though I've moved 45 minutes away, I still take Stella back this vet just because I like supporting a vet that supports the NSAL.
Anyhow, that's my two cents on the matter :)

Shit, I forgot an important one, it's called Aiza Biby and it was founded by a couple of folks who are in my department right now. I can't seem to find their website though I know they have one... it used to be at biby.org, but that seems to link to life sciences at stony Brook right now... in any case,
The purpose of the Aiza Biby charitable trust is to assist children, ages 3-18, in defining the future of conservation biology and to provide these youth with entertaining lessons in conservation education and hands-on experience in land stewardship across the world. These goals are accomplished through direct, community-level participation and cross-cultural, multi-media exchanges. Activities and funds of the trust are divided into five, tightly integrated areas to accomplish the above purpose: 1) children's VISIONS, 2) children's conservation education, 3) children's land stewardship, 4) children's scientific research involvement, and 5) children's cross-cultural, multi-media exchange.
A whole bunch of my department-mates are involved in this; a lot of the folks who do research abroad have started branches of this program in their countries (Costa Rica, Madagascar etc.)

Salvation army, Veterans, and the Drug rehab place. I work in Grocery stores all day so i see these charities regularly, and i give em all the change in my pockets which could be anywhere from 12 cents to $3. another thing is, the vet's usually want you to buy one of those little flowers, and sign something. i just give em the money and i tell em to give ithe flower to a girl they think is pretty, who knows if they ever did it.

Watch out at grocery stores; a lot of the "charities" (not necessarily the salvation army, but I mean the more local ones) are not legit, no matter what paraphenelia they have saying that they are. You should do your research and find out exactly how much of the money goes to the charity and how much goes to overhead. At the very least amake sure they have a 501(c)(3) to show that they're a not for profit charity.

theres only the three that i even talk to, cuz i know something about them. the one with the drugs is Long Island Teen Challenge... gotta say though they need to change there name, the idea is there, but it's open to anyone over 14 years old, so there are a lot of 30 to 60 year olds with bad drug problems. but salvation army and the veterans i believe they are safe.
oh yeah and homeless peeps, if they don't have enough alcohol in em to drown out the scent of not bathing.
just kidding...

Oh, and I have volunteered my PC for www.grid.org, which is a huge network of computers that does computational chemistry of atoms to hopefullly find a cure for diseases.
It simply runs in the background and does not affect the performance of your PC. But it does need to contact the host once it is finished and to get a new assignment. No spy ware or anything like that either

my big ones are:
The American Cancer Society (http://www.cancer.org/docroot/home/index.asp)
The National Arbor Day Foundation (http://www.arborday.org/)
I just give to them when I can. I also support
The ASPCA (http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=pro_nyc)
I live and work close to the Liberty Humane Society (http://www.libertyhumane.org/). I've brought them at least $300 in donations. But I should really volunteer.
I like giving. It's a good feeling.

I always try to help toys for tots. At my parents co-op they set up a box and have a donation in the lobby. I also always give money to the salvation army santas on the street.
The big charity I support is Prader Willi.

A disorder that you are born with. My nephew has it. I have donated, done walks and did some little work for them. Actually my Sister in-law, my nephew's mother is the head of the NYC chapter. The only other famous person I know who has a kid with this disorder, is the manager or ex-manager of the colorado Rockies. His daughter has PW. Don't remember his name.
Around Christmas I always try to do a little more for charity, but I guess I should do more all year round.

I volunteer and fundraise for both the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer (http://www.avonwalk.org) (Avon Foundation (http://www.avonfoundation.org)) and the ALS Association (http://www.alsa.org) (Greater NY Chapter (http://www.als-ny.org/chapter.php).)
I've lost family members to cancers (lung cancer, breast cancer and leukemia) and my grandfather was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease) about 5 years ago.
I try to make an annual donation of clothes and/or canned goods to MEND (Meeting Needs with Dignity) as part of my company's clothing/food drive and have given to the MS Walk and AIDS charities, like the AIDS Walk NY and Actors' Equity Fights AIDS.
I may not have a lot of money, but whenever I have time, I provide manpower. Sometimes that's better, depending on the charity and their needs at that point.
I'd like to encourage you all to volunteer whenever you can, too. You get a wonderful buzz and sometimes your company will even comp/credit you the hours off - mine does. (I am lucky.)

I tend to give a lot of dough to Winging Cat Rescue who's my friend on MySpace. They send out heartbreaking bulletins about cats about to be gassed so I always give them money.
Also, the ASPCA, Humane Society, Purple Heart, Amvets (I'm a sucker for veterans), and PIGS a sanctuary for discarded potbellied pigs and other animals.

Veteran groups such as the DAV, Legion, and VFW. NRA, Ducks Unlimited, and Autobahn Society round out the top.
At work we can give directly to non-profits from our paycheck. I give to a number of funds, but most focus on poverty via education or food donations.
