Tug McGraw, forever famous as a Met whose refusal to give up inspired a pennant-winning season, lost his battle with brain cancer last night and died at the age of 59.
McGraw, the lefthanded relief pitcher who won championships with the Mets and Phillies during a 19-year career, is best remembered as a fun-loving character whose personality was symbolized by a slogan he coined during the 1973 pennant race: "You Gotta Believe."
