View Full Version : The New Doggie Bag Phenomenon...

I've noticed this new trend in restaurants where if you want to bring some of what you didn't finish eating home with you, the waiter or waitress will now just bring you the styrofoam container and a bag and just plop it on the table for you to do it yourself.
There used to be a time when either they'd take the meal in the back and return with the leftovers in a bag all ready for you, or they would scoop it up right at the table and give it to you right then and there.
Personally I think the wait staff should do that, especially if they're getting a tip. When did this new practice of making the patrons bag the leftovers start, and what is the reasoning behind it?

At least it prevents the from spitting in it. A waitress at Applebees, when questioned, explained to us that there is a new health code law that says that the wait staff are not allowed to handle or touch the food in any way.

I was wondering what low rent outfits would be doing this, but the above list explains it. Health code Shmealth code, better restaurants still perform the simple task of placing your leftovers in a container! So why cant Applebees? 2 words; Lay Zenith. Dont get me wrong, Ive eaten at these types of places, but have never seen this phenomenon. If they tried it, the tip would reflect my shock.

So who's bringing the food to the tables? They send you to the kitchen to fetch it yourself?
I've never experienced this, but then I don't exactly make a habit of frequenting "restaurants" like Applebee's. I just went to my first one last weekend because it was the only place open in Montpelier, VT. I don't intend to ever go back. I don't understand why anyone would ever go there more than once, it was the most vile food I've ever eaten. My sister threw up after eating two bites of her burger. UGH.

what is the reasoning behind it?
Some people are really picky and want everything on the plate, while others may only want the main part and nothing else. I've seen people complain that the waiter/waitress didn't put a customers baked potato peel in the doggie bag and at the same time another customer complained and riduculed the same person for putting the peel in the 'bag' and said something along the lines of 'what do you think we eat garbage?'
so who knows maybe there was a story behind it....i don't mind doing it myself...hell, they aren't gonna heat it up for you when you get home so you gotta do some of the work
I don't intend to ever go back

Now, I don't think anyone's going to call Applebee's 5-star material, but this seem's to be a pretty extreme exaggeration. That, or you went to the absolute world's worst Applebee's in existance.
If that's truly the most vile food you've ever eaten in your entire life, I envy you- you must eat of a quality that the rest of us can only dream of. That, and your food bills must be ASTRONOMICAL.

I hate Applebees, The Olive Garden TGI Fridays, and all those chain resturants. Their food is shit, the people that work there are just trained and not on the lookout for anything odd in the food. I get the feeling that the meals come to the resturant prepaired and they just nuke it and bring it to you. I went there once, never again. Its like the difference between Sbarros and a local pizza joint. Sbarros smells good, but it sucks because its all looks and odor, with no taste. Id rather that they load the doggie bag at the table too, just for the antiloogie possibility avoidence factor.

if there's a new health code like that, then i know of a bunch of restaurants in violation. most restaurants will still wrap your food up for you when you want to take it home.
i personally prefer it when they bring me the containter and i get to pack it up myself. so often, i've taken my food home to find that the waiter/waitress has forgotten to include something from the meal, usually the best part like a sauce or something.

No, I said they could not touch the food in any way. Carrying it is not touching or handling the food directly. I am just stating what I was told by the staff at Applebees when asked why they do not wrap our food any longer.
EDIT-- I did my research below. LoL

I doubt that it's a health code thing, because I hardly ever see it happening. It's probably just a restaurant policy, although if I were working there, I wouldn't want to touch some stranger's food that's contaminated with saliva and such.
As far as chain restaurants go, the good thing about them is that you know what you're getting ahead of time. The bad thing? Well, you know what you're getting ahead of time. It's a step above McDonald's, et al, but you're never going to find "fine dining" at TGI Friday's. Still, I'm a big fan of the Monte Cristo from Bennigan's. Yum.

I miss the styrofoam clamshell packaging that Big Macs used to come in.
Every rainy day you'd invariably see one of those non-biodegradable nightmares floating downstream in the gutter towards its final destination in the neighborhood sewer.

So I called the US Department of Health, who said there is not a NY state law that states the wait staff are not allowed to handle the food. They directed me to call Applebees and ask them about this policy. So I called up Applebees, and they said that there is no code saying that the wait staff is not allowed to wrap up the food, so in turn, I must agree that it is laziness. The manager on the phone even said so much as that the waitress was probably busy and made something up. Isn't that something? So now we know for a fact that there is no law regulating the wrapping of our food to go. I am very disturbed that someone would tell a blatant lie due to laziness. It is in my nature to trust people, and this type of behavior is unacceptable. With that said, I am going to go to that Applebees, find that waitress, stuff her in a styrafoam box and ship her to Ethiopia to feed the hungry. Maybe I'll send over a dress or two because I CARE about the hungry people dressing stylish!
Hilfiger to the end!

I am not exaggerating. We left the restaurant and she threw up in the parking lot. She was not ill before we went. She was not ill the next day. I tried the burger. It was revolting. I had a " salad" that was all iceberg and romaine lettuce (that's ok I guess) drowned in dressing. I mean it was an entire, heavy pile of dressing. It wasn't a pile of lettuce that had dressing poured over it; it was clearly from the bottom of a big bowl where all the dressing had settled at the bottom and I was getting the dregs. It was supposed to have some sort of "chipotle grilled" chicken on it; the chicken was obviously boiled (but then what do you expect at a cook-chill establishment like this, or red lobster, or olive garden or whatever). My father had a steak, it tasted boiled as well. I'm not sure how you can boil a steak.
If that's truly the most vile food you've ever eaten in your entire life,
It was hands down the worst meal I've ever bought in a "retsuarant".
I envy you- you must eat of a quality that the rest of us can only dream of. That, and your food bills must be ASTRONOMICAL.
Because I could have made three hamburgers at home for half the price I paid at Applebee's for one and they would have been edible? Yeah. Astronomical.

It's part of the new Environmental Code of saving more trees. The more styrofoam used equals less paper needed (trees being cut down).
What's that? Styrofoam isn't bio-degradeble or environmentally safe. Nobody said it was a perfect plan. But it's a start.
Now if people just ate all the stuff on their plate or ate at home, the world would be a better place to live in and we wouldn't have to worry about all this stuff.
Don't forget to recycle. We all live here.

Well, i have to agree with Katylina on this--laziness. The General trend in these "family casual" restaraunts (Applebees, et al) is not towards great customer service. I work in an IHOP, and there is a lot of this going on. I'd say most of it is on the servers. Boxing and bagging food for a customer is going above and beyond, sadly. But like ADF said, you go to these restaraunts because you know what you're going to get.
