I've heard a lot about the added security for today and tonight in the city and I'm looking for the inside scoop from Manhatteners on the scene as to if things seem different or if it feels safer then any other day considering all the warning recently and if to you actually think searching random vans outside the tunnels will actually prevent anything. I guess in certian spots you can park or stop on either side of the street, but that cant possibly be city wide. And whats happening at 4?

I work in Spanish Harlem...I noticed a marked decrease in the police presence that is usually there!! I suppose that they had to reassign personnel down to Midtown for the upcoming festivities!!!

It's not censorship because people can't come here and post/say whatever they want in the first place.

Coming in to the city tonight, The lower level of the GWB was closed, causing the logjam from Hell on the upper level. The Lincoln Tunnel was closed periodically for police activity.

I took the bridge because I knew there was no way I'd reasonably be able to drive uptown from the tunnel.

7th Ave was closed, even to pedestrians. I had to show my work ID to the NYPD and explain that I had to go to work in order to be let past the pedestrian barricades at the corner of 57th & 7th.

So yes, security in the city is tight tonight. I think we're all REALLY safe here today!

I'm glad I didn't go into New York today. I work near Times Square at 50th & Broadway, but I'm off this week. Still, I go to New York every day to walk around and basically eat, but not today. I had nothing specific to do, so it wasn't worth the bother. I used to walk through Times Square at 6:00 or 7:00 P.M. on New Year's Eve, just to pick up the vibe, and then I would go home. But now that's not really an option. The massive security actually began in 2000.

This is my 3rd year in a row working New Year's Eve.

Of all of them, I'd have to say tonight's security was the tightest--think of your average New Year's, then multiply that by 5...and that was the security that you could SEE.
