Because 104.3 is a "classic" rock station. Trust me, I'm 36, my roots are all about the classic rock. That's where you start and then you expand. 104.3 is antiquated, but, unfortunately, has a place in NY radio.

Gotta Agree with Alice there. In classic rock, the Mount Rushmore might be:

Beatles
Stones
Who
Led Zep
Floyd

These seem to be the big five, in terms of classic rock programming; the groups that have specials; "Get the Led Out", etc.

On the Classic Rock station around here (94.7 FM) they have "Led Before Bed"

Smooth Jazz -- the flavor of the month of radio formats.

The old WHCN (105.9) in CT did a similar countdown every Thanksgiving. The 1-2 spot usually alternated between "Stairway" and "Freebird".

I think part of the issue with classic rock songs is that they have to be old, thus making them "classics". You can't write a "new" classic rock tune, so the list is rarely going to change.

I only listen to Jazz when it comes from a one Mr. Harry Connick Jr.

The best classic rock song of all time is The Hurricane by Bob Dylan, but it's so long that radio stations normally don't play it. The first time I ever heard it on the radio was the Thanksgiving countdown last year.

Stairway To Heaven kind of gives you a combination of music styles, ballad(good for a slowdance), great rock lead guitar work(not repetitious like Freebird and the 'born to rock' people don't have to feel like puss's), obscure lyrics... a little something for everybody...

most other songs of that time were just a basic blues progression with a catchy riff... like Satisfaction

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
And when she gets there she knows if the stores are closed
With a word she can get what she came for

Woe oh oh oh oh oh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
And you know sometimes words have two meanings
In the tree by the brook there's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven

Woe oh oh oh oh oh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking

Woe oh oh oh oh oh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forest will echo with laughter

And it makes me wonder

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
Don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the May Queen

Yes there are two paths you can go by
but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on

Your head is humming and it won't go because you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady can't you hear the wind blow and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our souls
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll
Woe oh oh oh oh oh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
And when she gets there she knows if the stores are closed
With a word she can get what she came for

And she's buying a stairway to heaven, uh uh uh.

I actually forgot to add in that Stairway to Heaven was one of my cousin's wedding songs back in the day. I don't even know where to go with that one.

why is fucking stairway to heaven #1 ever year?

Because it's better than Springsteen's "Born To Run", which last time I heard one of these lists, came in at #2 ( ha ha, #2.......this song is really is shit, and so is Bruce ).

How is a Thanksgiving marathon hitting us at X-Mas.

Here's a thought... post the list (http://www.q1043.com/top1043/list2003.html)

One year, back when wnew was the classic rock station doing that shit, Stairway was the #2 song. I think it was a Doors tune the year the Doors movie came out or something like that.

And Q104 will be replaying their top 1043 for New Year's.

The list is BS. How does Foriegner's "Long Way Home" only come in at 958? It is clearly a top 950 song!

Why is fucking "Stairway To Heaven...

Because no matter what they tell you, the bastards have just one box of records for every "classic rock" station and execution by firing squad is the penalty for deviating from that list.

There is a lot of "classic rock" that never gets played and it's a damned shame.

Seem to me they really stop trying to be creative with these things:

9 - Rolling Stones - Sympathy For The Devil
10 - Rolling Stones - Satisfaction

hmm

22 - Doors - L A Woman
23 - Doors - Light My Fire

ok

50 - Beatles - Revolution
51 - Beatles - Sgt.Peppers/With a Little Help From My Friends

hey

55 - Led Zeppelin - Black Dog
56 - Led Zeppelin - Dazed And Confused

stop that

65 - Cream - Sunshine Of Your Love
66 - Cream - White Room

geez

191 - Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man
192 - Lynyrd Skynyrd - Red, White and Blue

I give!

Did the countdown happen on a two-for tuesday?
