Recently I was digging through some boxes in my parents' basement, dating back to my college days. I came across this ticket stub from August 1990. This is truly a relic from the time right before the music industry experienced a huge paradigm shift. You could see a major label act like Sonic Youth, with a promising newcomer like Nirvana opening for a mere twelve smackers. I remember thinking at the time that this was a little steep. Heck, Husker Du in 1987 was only $9!

As for the show, I remember being disappointed by Sonic Youth. The mix was sludgy and their performance lacked commitment. Nirvana, on the other hand, kicked dick. I had seen them open up for the Screaming Trees a few months earlier and dug them. However, this time they were tighter and armed with a batch of catchy tunes. A twinkle came to my eye as I chomped on my cigar, thinking to myself, "these kids have got it!"

That's pretty cool Ken. I was just barely too young to be on to anything B.N. (before Nirvana).

My only comprable stories happened while I was in college. I went to the Crowbar to check out Soultion A.D. at a couple of other bands on a Monday night. The first band I had not heard, up from Harrisburg and were pretty good. Only about 15 people were there and only a couple were really into it. The band was Fuel and a couple of months later they came back and played the same place--sold it out in minutes.

Also when I was a freshman there was a big concert on the quad with Poe and Rust, two bands that were pretty much one-hit wonders, but big at that time. The third band was unknown. They rocked out and were lively and really stood out. It was more than a year after that when "Fly" came out and Sugar Ray got huge.

Not quite the same, I know.

I've only seen Sonic Youth once and I also was not impressed. It was Lollapoloza, I think they actually replaced Nirvana who was suposed to play, but...

You can check out 5 pages of concert stubs that made it back from a bunch of NJ/NY shows, going back to 1979, on the link below.

Is that also Stone Temple Pilots on the bill listed as STP?

Nice.

How much smack do you think was floating around on that tour?

Nah, that really would have been something. This was an all-girl band featuring Julia Kafritz from Pussy Galore (Jon Spencer's old band). I remember nothing about them, so they must have been pretty mediocre.

I saw Rage Against the Machine at Roseland in 1993 for only 10 dollars.

Mike, I was at Lollapalooza 1993 and Metallica at MSG.

I saw RATM open up on their first National tour opening for Hous Of Pain. I just remember being so blown away cause I never saw that much emotion pouring from anyone in a band before. I mean the man was just crying and screaming and crying and it was just awesome.

I got all my old stubs but I really gotta hunt them down.

I saw the Rolling Stones in '75 for $8.50.

In '77 I saw Iggy Pop with the Ramones opening (plus another band) at the Baltimore Civic Center for $13.00.
