Were Frodo & Sam a little bit too close? I thought they were gonna deep kiss.

To call back to the Best Trilogy topic a month ago, I now can say this is one of the greatest trilogies I've ever watched.

And HBox, that whole "You bow to noone." was one of the best lines of the whole Trilogy.

I'd see again now if I didn't have to work. I will have to go this weekend.

One thing I did want to say, why didn't Gandalf use any magic except for when he saved Faramir when they were racing back?

It was the bomb diggity for siggity.
It did seem like Smeagol had issues before the ring though. I didnt get the impression from the other two movies that the ring could screw you up so badly before you even held it. I think the scene couldve used a little more development.
To anyone who says it was too long, I have to ask - What could they have taken out? I remember being pissed off when I saw the DVD for Two Towers and seeing all of the scenes that were shortened or deleted. Some of them were pretty important for understanding why some characters did certain things. I assume theres a ton that was already taken out of this one just to keep it down to the length it was.
As for the ending, I wouldve been pissed it they didnt at least show them getting back to the Shire. I was ready to pop someone if it ended with Frodo getting tickled while his friends watched on. The only part I thought unnecessary was watching Sam go home at the last scene to play with his kids. I wouldve been happy with an even longer ending giving just a little more on what happened with the rest of the characters. But thats just me. I dont like sitting through a 3 hour movie just to see them chuck the ring and say, ok, we're done. I need to enjoy the satisfaction.

JustJon

The book also had the multiple endings. Sort of each character ends their arc, and Frodo just kind of views it until his ending, which leaves us with Sam and his family in the shire.

Well it wasn't supposed to be multiple endings, the fade to black was supposed to indicate a large gap in time. But yeah, I wished they did it a little differently.

When Aragorn bowed to the 4 Hobbits I was squirted a little. Not as bad a Fat Dirty Sean Austin was after Frodo told him to "Go Home" (what a bitch!) That was a moving moment, then the whole crowd of Men and Elves bowed to the 4 halflings. And Aragorn was dry humping Steven Tyler's Daughter (you can see it in the wide shot!)

Didn't Legolas look supergay in his little elf outfit watching the 3 hobbits bounce around that bed together. (That was a gay scene but I did like that Gandolf and Frodo laughing with joy part, They hadn't seen each other since the mines of Moria)

Was Smeagol supposed to be schizo before he ever got the ring or was it supposed to be a sudden thing the first time he saw it?

I guess it affect people in different ways. Sam had it for at least a few hours and didn't seem affected at all (he was just as fat and dirty as before.) Bilbo had it for years and didn't seem to have any problems until Frodo had the ring and Bilbo wanted to hold it one last time (but when he turned invisible I guess it was different for him, He didn't see a nightmare ghost world with Sauron looking at him and Nazgul flying at his ass!) Some LOTR expert wanna explain why Bilbo was okay for all these years? I do understand the ring gave him a longer youthful life (and he aged a lot in these 4 years or so since the beginning of FOTR)

Did Gandalf's eyebrows keep changing color?

I'm not an expert but isn't it cause about the time the ring was given to Frodo, the ring then began to seek out Sauron and it was dormant before then?

The ring still worked, it just didn't have the negative effects it had on Frodo because it wasn't Sauron wasn't seeking it yet.

Sauron was still weak at that point. He was becoming stronger and sent the Nazgul to find the ring for him.

The ring let Bilbo age much slower. Once he gave up the ring, his body began to age faster. Like trying to catch up to his real age.

Stephen King was wrote in some article, forget which, but it was about how gruesome and pornographic, not in any 'subliminal' way, but in a Real way, in our classic, and indeed, Kid's Literature.

Oh yeah; the article was on banned books. He's banned everywhere. So he pointed out some of the Grimm's and Jack and the Beanstalk and Foxes and all sorts of murder and cannabalism in the stories we tell our kids to sleep better.

Judy Blume? Banned in So many places, the reams of hate mail she has received. Mountains. And in my biased opinion, perhaps the greatest female contemporary author of the last century.

So After letting the movie sink in for a while I had this question for you guys:

Do you think the Theatrical Release of the DVD will be able to fit on 1 disc? (the 2nd being "special" features)

ROTK felt like one of the extended versions of the first two films. They were able to fit the first two films on 1 disc since there was no commentary or DTS track, but will the film look like crap on 1 disc? (the movie was about 3:10 without credits) Will the extended version fit on 2? Will it be 3? I have read that Peter Jackson will add so much it will be longer than both other extended films.

This movie was absolutely amazing. The ending did drag on and people clapped when it finally said the end. Should have cut it when aragorn and arwen and everyone else bowed to the hobbits.

2 questions:

What was the point of the eagles? Where did they come from? They were never mentioned until they just appeared.

I did not understand teh end. Why did Frodo have to leave the shire.

Gollum ruled. Serkis deserves at least a nomination for best supporting actor. I loved when he kept calling Sam fat.

Legolas and Gimli were cool counting their kills. Everyone in the theater left when he killed the elephant and he said it still counts as one.

Excellent movie and deserves best Picture.

Loved the movie - knew I would, based on the first two (and then the first two extended movies - damn, more like four movies there!) I didn't mind the multiple endings - seemed to fit the story, and reminded me of the multiple prologues in the extended version of part one.

The "no bowing to no one scene" was amazing. My favorite line (which of course I can't really remember now) was when Gandolf and Pippin rode off and he told his horse to show them what haste was, or something like that (damn - quoting a line and forgetting it is lame).

The Sam/Frodo relationship is just part of Tolkein's classic British literature world view of men at war.

Man...how cool/disturbing were the head-a-polts? How wonderfully, beautifully done was the scene where Pippin was forced to sing as the men went into battle?? Christ, I got douche chills during that.

I've already made plans to see it again at the Uptown theatre; the 10am show, on Monday the 30th.

I can't wait for the extended version.

just got back - awesome. Yes I got that "hinky" feeling between Frodo and Sam at the end like they were going to kiss but they're that close I guess. Yes the multiple "endings" was a bit much.

As for the movie - the trio of Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli still rocks (the whole Ship arrival scene), as well as the Legolas Gimli thing "I only count that as 1" - still good. The Eowyn and the RingWraith, though predicable, was great. Especially when he "died". effects were great as usual.

All in all worth the psiatica (spelling) it gave me.

Saw it last night. I was really excited since I loved the first two, but this one disappointed me. It was just a three hour battle scene. Battles are great and the one in Two Towers was excellent, but when it goes on and on, it gets tedious and gives me a headache. I couldn't even follow what was going on during the battles after a while. To whoever it was that mentioned Legolas looking like a complete queer at the end, I thought the same thing. I didn't find any of the "joy" to be touching, at all. It seemed so forced... especially Frodo when he was getting on the boat with that gay little smile. He looked drugged up. Overall, I liked it I guess. Any movie that can be that long but not FEEL like it, has got to be good. If Aragorn had ended up with that dull Eowyn chick I would have been pretty pissed. I really wanted her to get killed when she was incestuously staring into her uncle's eyes. "I am no man!" was really predictable and corny. Aragorn finally getting back with Arwen was the best part for me. It should have ended there. Didn't Sam's wife look like she was 45? Did Frodo really have to get his finger bitten off? After 10 hours, I still don't understand what Sauron is. Is it just the eye?? In FOTR, I thought Sauron was the head orc guy. I guess not.

Sauron was more of a spirit, since his body was killed at the beginning of the first movie. He put alot of his power into the ring and as he slowly healed and became more powerful, it led us to the Fellowship...

I can't wait for more in the EE. More witch king (I agree, he seemed so minizmized in ROTK), more character depth for Eowyn and Faramir, Saruman and Grima, etc.

I think Frodo had to leave the Shire because like the old saying goes "you can't go home again".

The rest of the hobbits were more tied to the Shire.

You could kinda see it in the Tavern, Frodo just doesn't feel like he belongs there anymore.

Didn't Frodo always wanted to go on adventures like his uncle? Maybe this was a way to go on another one.

That scene kind of bothered me a bit, because in this telling of the story, the Shire doesn't get to "grow" with the hobbits.

If you haven't read the books, When the hobbits reach the shire, it is in absolute shambles, and has been ransacked and taken over for its pipe-weed.

The returning hobbits have to lead the Shire to its liberation, and they are revered as heroes. The scene where the elder hobbits are more interested in thier pumpkin harvest than Frodo, et. al. made me long for the book ending, and kind of hope that one day, Peter Jackson goes back and makes an "Alternate Ending" version of the film.

Otherwise I loved it. I wasn't thrilled with Denethor Jumping off the tower, but the other little additions and "departures" were quite good, like the eagles fighting the Nazgul, Pippin actually saving Faramir, and the well-paced version of the orcs snatching up frodo's "body"

Regarding the supposed homoerotic nature of Frodo and Samwise's relationship, I think it's important to note that Tolkein served in the trenches of World War I, seeing action at the Battle of Somme. KOP touched on this in an earlier post, that these two characters were inspired by the young soldiers Tolkein served with. He observed ordinary British kids facing unthinkable horror in the trenches. There is a closeness that develops between soldiers, especially facing certain death. It's probably this intimacy that makes some viewers a little squeamish, since most of us have never been there. I thought it was appropriate to portray their relationship as a little more close than just two guys sitting around drinking Old Style and playing Madden 2004.

Cause he, Bilbo and Gandalf were all remnants of the old age. Frodo and Bilbo had held the ring too long, and Gandalf's purpose was to ensure the ring be destroyed.

Peter wanted to save time. But I hear the scene is only a few minutes long (like maybe 5-7)

I'm playing the director her, but I'm sure they could have found 30 seconds in different spots in the film to make up for that lost time. Plus Christoper Lee is the MAN when it comes to Tolkien, so why cut him out? Since the movie was already long as hell, I don't think 7 minutes would kill them if they couldn't cut ANYTHING ELSE OUT, especially since it's a major character who would otherwise not be seen.

He felt safe in cutting that scene since he'll be able to put it into the DVD, which is cool. because that is the version that will be out there for YEARS and YEARS.

I missed the scene, but the movie still ROCKED HARD without it.

He felt that it served more as an update of the previous two movies, rather than moving this story along - using Saruman as a way to tell the saga up to this point.

Thanks KOP. I see what you're saying, but that's like leaving Mickey out of Rockey II because he was already in the first one. Saruman was such a great villain and really would have brought closure to the trilogy.

I actually agree with you. I guess going into this knowing there will be an even longer, more complete version at some point made it easier.

By and large I don't have a problem with doing two versions of each film because I feel like we are rewarded with a treat when we see the expanded versions, part of me really wishes they had just the one, definitive version. The excuse I heard was the running times, but I believe (and I could be wrong) the regular version of Part 3 is longer than the extended version of Part 1.

If the running time was an issue then, why is it not an issue now? The excuse was always that theatre owners hate the longer running times because it means fewer butts in seats over the course of the day - fewer showtimes. Which mean fewer consessions, etc. But now Jackson is going balls to the wall with the epic, and basically saying , "FUCK IT."

The only explanation I can come up with (playing devil's advocate) is that the first one was such a gamble. No one knew, for sure, that it was going to be a hit - much less a huge hit. It very well could have tanked at the box office, which would have left them feeling stupid about doing all three movies at the same time (of course, with video these days, it could have become a cult hit on video during the course of the year before the second one came out, and maybe rebounded, nonetheless). Anyway, no one knew the first one was going to be a hit, so maybe they were told to bring the first film under a certain length.

REALLY looking forward to seeing it again next week - also looking forward the when they eventually put this out in the extended version.

I definitely thought is was the best of the three. I hope they expand on Treebeard in Isengard more in the EE. I can't wait for it!

Another reason for the extended version is:

They get your money once in the theatre, then they get it a second time when the DVD comes out, then, they get you a third time with the extended version. Good marketing, eh?

I shucked it, and I shucked it, and I shucked it, i'm quite the mother shucker

yeah, but at least they told you in advance that a better version is coming, as opposed to releasing the theatrical dvd then announcing the EE a month later. If you buy it, you're either uninformed or just want it.

Great Flick. I personally like the scene where Sam goes "I can't carry the ring for you but I can carry you!"

That was so cool!!!

I just saw the Lord of the Rings exhibtion in the Boston Science Center! Oh boy was it sweet! If you're a fan of the movies, I strongly suggest you see it! It has costumes, sculptures, and other things- like, you can sit on one side of a bench and your buddy or chick sits on the other side of the bench and using trick photography, they make one of you hobbit-sized and the other Gandalf sized and they show it on a screen! And you can get a picture of it! It was awesome! I'm gonna make some popcorn right now and watch "The Fellowship." Wanna come over?
