View Full Version : Wasting your allowance

When I was younger, and me and my friends got our allowances, we would usually head over to the convenience store and just buy loads of junk food. Doritos, soda, gum, candy, whatever. I'm suprised I didn't weigh like 400 pounds considering all the junk I could put away. Guess all the running around helped burn it off.
Eventually I wised up and started saving it so I could buy records (for you young 'uns out there, they were the big black vinyl dics), and toys and stuff. I'm gonna have to go out and buy a bag of chips and a Jolt now.

If I had a goal as a child, I could save. I got my SNES in this way. But if I didn't, I would usually just blow it on candy and comic books too.

We didn't get much of an allowance, so we had to go out and make money mowing lawns, shovelling snow, washing cars and the like.
Where we lived was in a developement on base with a sort of townhouse-type set up and all the backyards had a sidewalk going through there. People would put their empty soda bottles on their back porches and we'd go around asking them for the bottles.
We'd load up our little red Radio Flyer wagons with bottles and take them to the store and get the deposit money, which we'd spend on candy, kites, 45s and rubber band powered balsa wood planes...

Bowie, Md.: Berkeley, I'm so glad you're back!; I've really missed The Far Side all these years.
Berkeley Breathed: Yes, thank you, but I don't draw Far Side. I draw Calvin and Hobbes.

That's now wasting allowance, thats what you supposed to do with allowance, spend it on stupid stuff you regret later. All part of growing up.
And when you grow up? You still spend it on stupid stuff...
I mean, I should really take the time to make an estimate, but I can't imagine how much I spent, one quarter at a time, at Missle Command, Pole Position, Centipede, Defender... just keep going.
Gotta be in the thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars. I'm talking total. My guess anyway, off to estimate...
[EDIT: Oh wow I forgot; the money above is chump change compared to what i spent on porn.]

I used to buy tools when I needed them, now I'll buy one just because I figure one of these days I'll need it.
In my drill toolbox there sits a Makita drywall driver that I bought 6 or 8 months ago. I've never used it. It's still got the twistie on the cord...
