The Smithsonian's newest museum, a second "Air and Space" museum, has just opened up.

The New Air and Space Museum! (http://www.nasm.si.edu/museum/udvarhazy/)
http://webdbnasm.si.edu/images/150/WEB10034-2003_150h.jpg
This facility is not in downtown DC, but in the burbs, next to Dulles Airport.
They have a space shuttle, a concord, Enola Gay, a Blackbird and tons more, all within one of the world's largest rooms! As a contrast - the entire Air and Space Museum on the Washington Mall would fit easily within a single room of the new structure.
The official name of this place is the National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, named after aircraft leasing executive Steven F. Udvar-Hazy, who donated $65 million - the entire complex cost $311 million, most of which was through private donations.
So come on down! Visit R&F and see some air and some space!

I thought it was Steven Udar-Hazy. I remember because he got a standing ovation from Cheney & all the Generals & Aviators at the ceremony on C-Span. He was the "Sugar Daddy" of this AMAZING building. They got it going on there and it's defenitely on my list of places to see in DC.

Best of both worlds, Reesh. I live about five minutes from the new museum, so after you sit and spin on the dwarves, you can hobble on over!

I've been drooling over this one for years; reading the reports as each big plane arrived; I mean the real, actual pieces of history.
Now, the Air and Space Museum on the Mall was, at the time, one of the largest 'open' enclosed spaces ever built. Perhaps why its the most visited museum on the planet. Even I was shocked by that stat. Want more shock? It was built under budget, and opened ahead of schedule. Plop. I'm Dead.
But this new one, Dwarfs the one on the Mall.
A full Size SR-71? Whoa.
A friggin Concorde?
The Enola Gay?
Oh man that just scratches the surface. I can't wait, so someone get ready for when I go coz this will be a marathon.
I can literally spend all day in the air+space on the Mall. To stand in that center room with the Actual:
Wright Flyer
Spirit of St. Louis
Yeager's Bell X-1
Apollo 11 Command Module
John Glenn's Friendship 7
Just right there!
Sweetness...

I love museums man. I'm a geek at heart, and this kid of stuff is great.
I just need to go around a museum on my own, not on a tour or with a big group. I like to spend time on the things I find interesting and move past stuff I find boring.

That's a great idea!! It would be a good excuse for everyone to get together.
Warning, tho - springtime is the busiest time of the year for the Smithsonian museums on the mall - I imagine the same will be for this new one. Lots and lots of tour groups. January and September are traditionally the slow periods.
Any-who, I'd be up for anything, especially if there is the promise of love and shame afterwards.

You guys have been reading my mind. I was wondering for the longest time if and when a Ron and Fez walking tour of the Mall might take place. And in agreement with DMMoe, the tour is loose enough, that if you don't want to even go On the tour, there's a tour option.
But a group of us would rock. Sounds like between the board members we got all the tour guides we need. Do a real tour; to the great places people often miss.
January is the perfect time. Cold is good, coz we'd be doing a bit of walking. I used to run the mall, starting at Lincoln, up to the captiol and back; I remember 4-5 miles for that. Wow if I'm off I will look stupid.
My place to visit off the tour book; I'd take you all to the Museum of American Art, right off the main mall, near the Navy Dept [that's a gorgeous, sprawling courtyard their, you're walking on the coolest maps and stuff too...], and show you all:
Hamptons Throne (http://www.missioncreep.com/tilt/hampton.html)

I haven't been to D.C. since 1984. Do they still sell that NASA Apollo mission Freeze-Dried Ice Cream in the commissary? If they do, color me there!
Actually I've been trying to talk my girlfriend into a D.C. trip. Somehow I don't think the new "Air and Space" museum is going to do the trick. It does sound pretty spiffy to me. Do they have a walking tour of the various locations where D.C Cab was filmed?

Has anoyone else thought that the Air and Space Meseum on LI kicks ass?
The lunar modules that landed on the moon six times, and worked 100% each? Built on Long Island!
The Lunar Module at the A+S museum is often mistaken as a model. It's not, it was built, but never flew. Some think it's a model because it has a 'cut out pieces of aluminum sheets and foil' look. That's because the damn thing had to be so light the metal was, in places, not a hell of a lot thicker then a few pieces of thick aluminum foil. Looks hand-built because they were.
This was the machine that people were like, 'here's where they die'. Getting to the moon? Not extremely difficult, you shoot you rocket to a point in space, and hope the moon is there when you arrive. But 12 astronauts climbed in those things, two at a time, and detached, and the rockets went off, and down they went.
I'd be a shrieking coward in a fetal position at that point already. These guys took those babies down, first by computer, but then taking over, and just like a video game, a little thrust, a little yaw, and down, and boom, they landed. Neil and Buzz were utterly lost on Apollo 11. The computer was steering them right for a nice field of boulders. Not good. Neil over-rode the computer [which by the way was also sending out alarms [incorrectly] suggesting something was very wrong and they should abort.
No place to land. So Neil looks around as Aldrin calmly says "Quantity Light". Translation: Neil, if you don't land in about 45 seconds, we run out of fuel and crash into the moon. The people in Mission Control see this and are going batshit. They're not going to make it.
And then he sees a clearing, and steers overs to it. "30 Seconds" is called out. The estimate of fuel left, and he still hasn't. Mission rules require an Abort command in about ten seconds, but Gene Krantz doesnt even consider it. His call: everyone shut up and let him land.
And he did. The estimates of fuel left range from 10 to 30 seconds. No one knows. But the triumphant successful landing was nothing but. As the room exploded in cheers when Neil proclaimed that The Eagle Has Landed, most of the controllers were busy wondering: what the fuck just happened and where the fuck Are they??
Ok, rambling here...
Can we go???

If American Art is closed, then the National Portrait Gallery is closed, too?
Yeah...they are both closed. They were supposed to reopen in 2004, and they still might - I can't find the info on the website (http://www.si.edu). Also in 2004 (Sept), the National Museum of the American Indian opens - which will be the last museum on the mall.
Most of the museums in DC are free, by the way, including all of the Smithsonians and the National Gallery of Art (which is not Smithsonian, but on the mall and everyone assumes is). It comprises two buildings, and has an amazing collection.
The Holocaust is not Smithsonian, and requires a timed ticket (which is free) - it takes about 3 hours to get through that. Some of the other art museums (Corcoran and Phillips) require a "donation," but I'm not sure how much. The new Spy Museum does have an admission (and it's pretty hefty), and that museum can take between 1 - 2 hours to get through.
As it was mentioned before, The Air and Space Museum on the mall is the most visited museum in the world. The second most visited museum is the Smithsonian's Natural History Museum, which has a few dino bones, the Hope Diamond and lots of dead things. The third most visited museum in the world is the Smithsonian's American History Museum, which has Archie's chair from All in the Family, the preservation of the Star Spangled Banner, the First Lady gowns and a brand new transportation hall, which has a couple of really big trains. All three museums are on the mall, and they are all free, however they also now have metal detectors, which are new since 9/11.
Other SI museums on the mall include a modern art museum, two Asian art museums (that are connected), and an African art museum. Smithonian museums not on the mall include the American Art/National Portrait Gallery, which is right across from the MCI Center, the Renwick (which is an annex of the American Art Museum), the Annicostia Museum (African American), the National Zoo and now the new Air and Space Annex, out next to Mojo's groovy pad.
And that doesn't even bring up the monuments on the mall (Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, Roosevelt, Vietnam and Korean - and soon WW2), the FBI Building, the Capital (do they do tours there anymore?) or the White House, also Arlinton National Cemetary across the river, the Pentagon, the Kennedy Center, the Library of Congress and the Supreme Court.
For those wanting other sites, there is the hotel Regan was shot, the steps used in the Exorcist, the hotel where both Marv Albert bit a woman and where Monica Lewinski was interigated, the Walter Reed Medical Museum (aka: freakshow stuff), and the bridge that was hit by an airliner back in 1981 because it had ice on the wing.
All good stuff.
And now that Mojo is putting everyone up, there's no excuse not to come down.

Anyone know what ever happened to the figures from the old Wax Museum?
Also, I'd like to echo the mention above of Arlington National Cemetery.
It is phenominal if you are into history or feel perhaps we owe a debt of gratitude to those buried there.
While the numbering system is not perfect by any means and it's not easy to find some graves, if you persevere, you can find what you're looking for and more.
For example, on my last visit I stumbled quite by accident, across the graves of Archer Vandegrift and whaddya know, there's "Red Mike" Edson right behind him!
There's a cool headstone to WWII vet and champ boxer Joe Louis right near "Pappy" Boyington, and I think 3 of the guys who raised the flag on Iwo Jima are buried there. They have a bronze plaque depicting the famous Joe Rosenthal photo on the back of their headstones.
Louis Cukela, "Manilla John" Basilone, "Jumpin' Joe" Chambers, Audie Murphy, there's a hell of a lot of heroes buried there, and there's a lot of worse ways to spend your time...

Call it morbid, I don't care, but I like to take photos of the gravesites of people who are my heroes, and the ones mentioned above are some of mine.
I make a point of not just taking a picture, but remembering the deeds of the person.
Several times I have swapped stories with someone who was just passing by or who had stopped by the same grave.
I've heard some great ones down outside of Saluda where "Chesty" Puller is buried...

I like how at Arlington, some of our greatest heroes like Audie Murphy and John Pershing have such simple graves, no real outlandish type of thing. Audie Murphy I believe is buried next to a tree. I also enjoy visting the Confederate graves up their too and making sure they are keeping the yankees honest. Every American should make the trip to Arlington at least once in their lifetime...just don't go there in July or August in the heat...yikes...and double yikes...i've made that mistake more than a few times..

Update:

I think '06 is right, I walked past there Sunday (after the Wizards' loss to the Bucks) on my way to see how sold-out the Spy Museum is, the answer to which is Very.
If you come to DC and like spookery but the Spy Museum doesn't work out for some reason there IS the National Cryptologic Museum next door to NSA. http://www.nsa.gov/museum/
Anyway, I've been to the new Air and Space Museum and it lives up to the hype even though there is a very preliminary feel to a lot of the exhibits... Air France donated the Concorde immediately after its last flight, which they weren't expecting. The Enola Gay is immaculately restored and shielded by plastic sneeze-guards from those who would want to make a "statement" on it. I didn't know it was built by Martin, in Ohio.
The Space Shuttle is the Enterprise, which never had a propulsion system in it or real heat tiles and was used to test atmospheric flight after being released from the back of a 747. There is also a sectioned and illuminated Gemini capsule on the other side of the Mercury capsule in the roped-off area from which you observe Enterprise's nose.
Some of the smaller exhibits are the most interesting, if not the most breathtaking. Aerospace propulsion is covered, in an exhibit that wraps around a stairway, from handbuilt four-cylinder exposed-lifter engines to some 32-cylinder diesel (!) behemoth, the need for which evaporated with the advent of the jet engine, early examples of which are also displayed. There's a couple of early satellites displayed, too, wrapping around another staircase at the other end of the building.
All in all it's worth seeing more than once, in my experience. I spent about 5 hours there and didn't get to see everything (like the "control tower" that is supposed to give you an idea of what it's like at the Dulles (IAD) tower visible in the distance and the IMAX theater). Parking is $12/vehicle; I've heard that the shuttle bus that runs out there from the Mall is $7/ passenger. Admission is free as at all Smithsonian museums.

ozzie, I have no idea why this piece speaks to me so loudly; but it's almost an obsession. I'm so bummed that the museum is closed. Oh Well...

Poor man's vision
Sleeping in a garage

Fear not
Where there is no vision
People perish
Throne of the third heaven
This is love
Fear not
Quiet men often keep secrets
Timing is everything
Pieces left
Pieces right
Holy ordinary
Fear not
Junk revelation
Tinfoil miracle
State of eternity
Where there is no vision
People perish

Hey El Mudo
Can you name the confederate general burried in Arlington?
That's an interesting piece of trivia.

I found out parking at the Hair and Face Museum is $12.00! If you take the shuttle from downtown out to Dulles, it's only $7.00, but it will take 45 minutes.
And there's only one restaraunt there, which will be overpriced.
The good news is I've heard the museum itself is amazing, if you are into the subject. I've been told it could be an all day event.
So, we meet at Mojo's (maybe spend the night, and tell ghost stories and roast smores on his toaster over!), and then pile into one or two cars, so the parking price won't be as bad.
Hazzah!
