American singer Lauryn Hill, from a stage used by the Pope, shocked Catholic officials at a concert by telling them to "repent" and alluding to sexual abuse of children by U.S. priests.
The broadside came during the recording Saturday night of a Christmas concert attended by top
Vatican (news - web sites) cardinals, bishops and many elite of Italian society, witnesses said.
Hill made her comments when taking the microphone to sing at the concert, held in the same huge hall and stage Pope John Paul (news - web sites) uses for his weekly general audiences and other events. The Pope was not present.
"I did not come here to celebrate the birth of Christ with you but to ask you why you are not in mourning for his death inside this place," she said according to a transcript of her statement run by the Rome newspaper La Repubblica.
A spokesman for Prime Time Productions, the concert's organizers, said the newspaper's quotes were accurate.
"God has been a witness to the corruption of his leadership, of the exploitation and abuses ... by the clergy," she said.
This was an apparent reference to the scandal in the United States last year over the sexual abuse of children by priests.
Hill told the crowd to seek blessings "from God not men" and said she did "not believe in representatives of God on earth."
A few feet away in the front row sat five cardinals, including Edmund Szoka, American governor of Vatican City.
Hill, 28, did not sing the song listed on the program but instead sang a song about social injustice.
Organizers said Hill's outburst and performance would most probably be cut from the show when it is aired on Christmas Eve.
Hill shot to fame in the mid-1990s with band The Fugees, whose album "The Score" sold 17 million copies, to become one of the biggest hip-hop chart successes of all time.
She went on to win five Grammy awards for her debut solo album, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill." She has a son and daughter by Rohan Marley, the son of Reggae legend Bob Marley.

and i'm sure she enjoyed spending the money that my white ass spent on her cds.

To me the worst crime in humanity is the abuse of a child whether it is physical, verbal, or sexual. These predators use God and the blind faith of innocent children and their families to satisfy their sexual urges. It is 'always' a good thing to have someone speak out against it and the bigger the stage the better.

Sheep.well, if someone heard it reported, and then didn't hear anything else after that, why wouldnt they believe it? does listening to the media automatically place one in the "sheep" category? while it is certainly true that the press is allowed to publish things that false without checking their stories first, i don't think that it's so unreasonable that a person (like myself) who read/heard this in more than one place might believe it. it would probably be more constructive to explain why it's not true (as was done in this thread), rather than berating. sorry if i don't live up to your standards.

I certainly hope you weren't holding me up as the standard of constructive explanation, Arienette, since since I think my reply was rather bitchy. I apologize, but my other online "home" is snopes.com, so I tend to be a bit peeved by urban legends being repeated as gospel truth.

As much as I do not appreciate the forum she used to do it, I can't disagree with what she said. Some shit needs to be done. John Paul II has been one of the best popes in history, but he's really dragged his feet on this one and for that he deserves criticism.
As for Lauryn Hill's statements, I can;t really blame the people who think she said that, because it has never been widely reported that she DIDN'T say that. Unless they were so infuriated that they went out to find exactly the time and place when she said this, it is unlikely that they would ever know.

Congrats to her. It took a lot of balls to stand up to these fuckers who have ignored nazi persecution, pedophilia and more.
Pedophilia? yes. Nazis? Not exactly. There were some German bishops who sided with the Nazis, however, there is no organization which rescued more Jews during the Holocaust than the Vatican.
This is from a NY Times editorial from Christmas day, 1942:
The voice of Pius XII is a lonely voice in the silence and darkness enveloping Europe this Christmas...He is about the only ruler left on the Continent of Europe who dares to raise his voice at all."
According to the December 1940 issue of Time magazine, Albert Einstein had this to say about the Church:
"Only the Church stood squarely across the path of Hitler's campaign for suppressing the truth. I never had any special interest in the Church before, but now I feel a great affection and admiration because the Church alone has had the courage and persistence to stand for intellectual truth and moral freedom. I am forced thus to confess that what I once despised, I now praise unreservedly."
Of the forty-four speeches Pacelli (Later Pius XII)gave in Germany as papal nuncio between 1917 and 1929, forty denounced some aspect of the emerging Nazi ideology.
Before you say that Pius chose to protect the Jews after the fate of the war had been decided, also take note of this Nazi propaganda leaflet from 1937:
<img width=400 src=http://members.aol.com/johnjrh/pacellismall.jpg>
The woman, with obviously Jewish features and a Communist newspaper, is seen warming up to Pacelli, who was considered anti-Nazi.

Yeah, that's what I said. It's a stupid story, and when I heard it it rang false from the get-go. Why the fuck would someone like her say something that monstrously stupid? It's not like I was engaging in rocket science here. It was never a news story, it was shock jock/internet lore, and those are rarely, if ever, true.
The story has been around for a good five years now. Why would anyone honestly think she would still have any kind of a career (Well, she doesn't now, but that's what not putting out an album in about 6 years will do to you) if she said something like that? I just think it's ridiculous if anyone still thinks it's true.

I like Snopes a lot, too. I'm constantly debunking stupid email forwards from my friends with it.
I never heard that story about Lauryn Hill, but that Snopes article didn't debunk it. It shouldn't have been a 'false', but an 'undetermined."
Her denying she said it isn't exactly proof. Where did the quote come from? Was it just made up out of nowhere? She probably said something, even if that wasn't it word for word.
Now, don't get me wrong, I think she probably didn't say it like that, but they didn't prove it there.
And the "why would she say something so dumb" argument is equally empty. Celebrities do and say ridiculously dumb things all the time, often without paying any price. From Michael Jackson to Alec Baldwin's "If Bush wins, I'll move to Canada" to Eminem's lyrics calling for killing and stabbing all the "fags." I mean, clearly she's not the most tactful or polite person on Earth. As was pointed out, if she really had such a problem she should have declined the invite from the outset, and then explained publicly why she turned it down. She was an invited guest at this event, essentially in "someone's home," and as such should have shown respect to the hosts. That is the truth no matter what you feel about these people's beliefs or policies. Given that she behaved like this in a public setting, I'm not inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt as it regards to her "smarts."

That guy, is a figurehead of an institution that is rooted in power and greed.
Read what you quoted me. I never said the pope was a dictator. He wasn't even there when Hill made her rant.
I said "vatican dictators".
Meaning the men who run the vatican. The old money, old bloodline who as far away from the original meaning of priest as ones that have been convicted of molestation.
One of the meanings of dictator is "one ruling absolutely and often oppressively."
How many human beings died because of the catholic church? Because of rulings that came down from the vatican. How many cultures and people were destroyed in the name of god?
The vatican controls a group of people. Their word is absolute (until they change their mind) and they have been physically oppressively in the past and continue to be mentally oppressive. You're a catholic with a condom? Not on god's watch!
That is a dictatorship.

Where did the quote come from? Was it just made up out of nowhere? She probably said something, even if that wasn't it word for word.
It was said she said it in the press tent the year she won all the awards at the MTV Video Awards. Nevermind all of her comments to the press are on tape and she said nothing of the sort.
Let's put this one to rest - if Hill or any other member of the Fugees had said anything like that on MTV or anywhere else, the tape of those remarks would have hounded them ever after. That no one can produce this tape - or even agree on what was said, and by whom - should drive a stake through this rumor's heart.
MTV would later announce the allegation against Hill wasn't true, but by then it was too late - the rumor was already in motion. In the wake of this slander, Hill did call in rebut the comment on the Howard Stern Show. On numerous other occasions, she has denied saying anything remotely resembling the statement credited to her. In response to her critics, she offered: "What I did say was that I love my people, black people, and I will continue to make music for them."
Would any recording artist be foolish enough to request that a segment of the music-buying public boycott her works? This quote is likely a backlash born of Hill's success, one that parallels the specious Tommy Hilfiger rumor ("If I knew that Blacks and Asians were going to wear my clothes, I would have never designed them"). It is possible one of Hill's many Black-positive statements was misconstrued as a white-negative comment by someone possessed of questionable listening skills and regurgitated as such.
The Hilfiger and Hill rumors, though similar, display a curious dichotomy. Although no other tales circulate about Hilfiger's alleged racism, we continue to receive many different reports claiming that even if Hill didn't make the statement attributed to her here, she has disparaged non-Blacks in other words and deeds (usually ones the teller asserts he - or someone he knows - personally witnessed). Whether this phenomenon says more about the subject or the audience is something we don't yet know.
