Wow, they got him! (http://msnbc.msn.com/ID/3708151/)
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Saddam Hussein has been captured alive in his hometown of Tikrit, a member of the U.S.-appointed Governing Council said Sunday.
"We are celebrating like it's a wedding," said Kirkuk resident Mustapha Sheriff.
They're waiting for his DNA confirmation. He's batching in a cup for us right now!

Nice news for Christmas!! Let's see now what develops for the insurgents!! Will the attacks stop or will there be an increase in violence? I tend to think that things will get worse for awhile!!

HOLY SHITE
I'm listening to radio; this sure doesn't sound like 'Maybe' or 'Kinda-Sorta'; they are reporting this with high confidence, saying he was caught in a night raid in a house in Tikrit; on a raid that was not random, as a reporter remarked that, at whatever base this was based out of, a bunch of vehicles tore out of the place last night [local time]; and them returned later with Military approaching the vehicles.
I don't know what to make of all of this yet, but I am pretty frigging psyched; please god let this one work out for everyone, and I mean everyone, involved.

talk about a change in lifestyle, from the Palace to the 'spider hole' has gotta suck!
will terrorist actions decrease? if the good people of Iraq begin to stand up to them alongside the Military and Police Forces. you would think some 'bad guy' has got Saddams money and will continue to fund the terrorists.
final thought: this may have just won George Bush his re-election and may give the stock market a quick boost...

BREAKING NEWS
Oh shit I thought.
Turns out to be a pretty good thing I just hope that things don't turn to worse with insurgents against the coalition.
Can anyone else remember when a big time "Evil Dictator" has been captured like this and kept ALIVE?!? I remember Milosovich but besides that, I don't know.
I wonder even if Saddam will be brought onto our soil for any kind of trial.
I wonder how long until flea market, streetcorner and subway merchants are gonna have t-shirts for sale.
It is just so surreal seeing Saddam being checked for lice and having a tounge depressor stuck in his mouth.

This has been a job well done by the troops. Their patience and determination has paid off tremendously. I hope this boosts their morale even slightly.
It's important to remember that attacks against our troops won't stop now. There are still Saddam loyalists out there who may now initiate retribution attacks because of his capture.
Now lets give Saddam the war crimes trial he so richly deserves.

You can forget about a comeback.
2) There's dancing in the streets, you're not as popular as you thought. FYI-some of your own clansmen turned you in.
3)We're looking at several options. How does a cage at Guantanamo sound?
4) Then there's the chance of a humiliating trial at the Hague and a life sentence. Heh heh, I guess that would beat letting some of your Iraqi victims decide your fate, now wouldn't it?
Stop your crying, here's some Kleenex............made by jews! ......Hahaha, just kidding.
Maybe.

6)Wherever you go, you'll need these- a set of "instructional" videos to help you in your new career. Obviously you will need to master the art of fellatio very quickly.
7) Even if you are tried over in the U.S. and get the death penalty, it can be many years before we execute you.
8) But I do have some good news!"

I saw Chris Matthews commenting on what he thought about what would happen to Bush's re-election plans if after grilling, Saddam said he never had WMD's and this and that, and I wanted to cave his head in. That asshole can't look past politics for 5 minutes to see how great it is we got Saddam?
All politics aside, it is great for the people of Iraq who want a free society that Saddam is accounted for. Now they KNOW he will never again be able to regain power in his country.

according to what I've heard his sole reason for invading iraq was because of WMD. They still haven't found them and we've spent billions of dollars and alot of families have lost loved ones...
i agree catching Saddam is a victory and it looks like the worst he has done in the past decade is murder his own people but for Political purposes Bush's opponents can still use the WMD issue against him ,not that it may do any good...

Nothing, if the attacks continue. If they don't, it's Bush for 4 more years. In fact, this could be a bad time for this to happen. If the attacks continue for another year, this day will be wiped from memory.
But I don't see how this justifies this war in the least. There still are no WMDs. We still aren't safer. This man was never a real threat. These are matters of opinion that this capture won't affect.
Today is a great day for Iraqis, but it won't change my life in the least.

Aside from obvious reasons that the guys was evil, politically I think it's great that they got him - that they take this off the table for the left to use. It forces the Democrats to not have to run on simply the negatives "Anti-Bush/Anti-War"platform.
That said...Saddam supposedly didn't matter. That's what we were told. We were also told this war was about Weapons of Mass Destruction. We were also told that Iraq presented an immediate threat to our security, which is why this adminstration deployed 350,000 troops there - meanwhile, the one man we know for a fact that organized an attack on America is still at large - and we only have 8,500 troops in Afgahnistan looking for him.
Iraq was not what it was promised it would be - the Taliban are far from vanquished or discouraged in their part of the world - and our dreaded enemy, someone that we should have dealt with 13 years ago before hundreds of thousands of Iraqis were slaughtered, looks like a befuddled, tired and pathetic old man (part of me really wonders if this adminstration wanted him captured alive - a trial may bring out things Bush may not want revealed about his father).
A smart candidate with some balls can still make a go at it, but it's going to be tough. Most of the Dems are lightweights - I actually heard Gepheardt this morning sounding very Republican as he spouted the rhetoric about "3000 American lives killed on September 11th" - another moron forgetting that many of those killed were not Americans!
Skirt chasing a-hole!
Finally...Anybody Else Remember Iran '79-'80?
The same radical Shiite Muslims who deposed our pal, the brutal Shah, still run the place, just to the east of Iraq. Oh yeah, we got even all right, we made Saddam Hussein our pal to wage war w/ Iran throughout the '80s (same as we supported the Taliban's repulsion of the Soviets from Afghanistan). Few, if any, Iraqis were expecting Saddam to make a comeback anyway. But his capture will vaidate that the Sunnis' grip over the Shiite majority & the Kurds is loosed. Hatred of both Saddam and the U.S. runs deep among the Shiites. Our admin in Washington now wants to get this occupation wrapped up, install an Iraqi govt by June, bring the troops home. This is a medal day for our service personnel who captured Saddam (another feather in the cap for the Clinton Military!). Beyond that, we're reaching the limit of our ability to influence regional politics.
I don't give the Democrats much of a chance, now in '04. The left is too unorganized and too prone to be reactionary. Bush can be beat (I remember his father winning a war with Iraq only to lose an election), but I don't know if any of these guys can do it.

We supported him for at least 10 years, during which he committed many crimes in Iraq, and waged the war against Iran, so aren't we also responsible?
I'm not seriously suggesting we should be on trial, but the point is that we supported this guy til he didn't fit in with our plan, and then we suddenly figured out he was a bad man. Who are we supporting now that we'll be trying to depose in 15 years?
I'm glad Saddam is being borught to justice, but I don't feel like we've achieved some great victory.

That's really the only move he could make.
I think this IS going to hurt Dean - not necessarily against Bush, or necessarily hurting his chances of winning the nomination (the hard-left is solidly behind him), but in the near future at least the other candidates are going to use this to hammer him, and hopefully gain some traction.

For the troops in the thick of it? Definitely. For those of us fortunate to have the luxury of being back from the frontline and able to take in the entire situation? Why the hell would it be? "Oh, I still think we rushed way too fast into this war and alienated all of our significant allies and created HUGE longterm damage in that regard...but we caught Saddam! That makes it all OK!"
We'll fuck this up, too. I can't belive people like Joe Lieberman are saying we should try and charge him here in the US. For WHAT?!? What we SHOULD do is hand him over to the international court in the Hague and let him face justice, but my money's on us tossing him to the halfassed government in Iraq and they kill him, essentially spitting in the face that every other major western government has banned capital punishment...except us. I'm sick of this pissant little scrape of a country suddenly getting priority over EVERYONE else in the world. Fuck Saddam Hussein and fuck Iraq. It brings out the bleeding hearts in conservatives, and that's just sad.

On the other hand, to everyone talking partisan politics in this thread, Hussein's capture means nothing to me personaly, and as long as I have to work 2 crappy jobs to make my meager ends meet, while sitting on a Bachelor's Degree, staring down humongus student loan debt, I can't vote for the encumbant. I find it really interesting that the first people to bring up politics into this issue have been the Republicans. From my Dad, who called me early Sunday morning singing about the demise of Howard Dean, to postings on here, to the five minutes I could stomach listening to O'Reilly, the overwhelming feeling from the right is that capturing Saddam and giving a sense of closure to the Iraqi people is secondary to sticking it to "the far left."
(Christ - one moron even got away with saying on O'Reilly that "all liberals just want to bring our troops home now instead of staying the course" - meanwhile, it's been Hillary and Dean who I've seen lately saying just that, while the President wants to get us out of there before he is appointed President...again).
I have not heard one liberal or democrat bellyache about how this has hurt them or damaged them, but to view the world through the conservative eyes and you would swear that the left is throwing themselves off of buildings today.
Meanwhile, there are still several realities at play here; one, that this was supposedly about WMDs and Saddam's immenent threat to our safety in American, and another is that to many of the people fighting the US occupation in Iraq, Liberation did not mean bringing back Saddam. Still plenty for all to fight about.

Nevertheless, I'm glad they got the fucker. Coward down in his spider hole, which incidentally, is my new favorite word. SPIDER HOLE.
I would like to think our boys who found him would have had a little fun before they dragged him out of that spider hole. What they should have done is "accidentally" placed the latrine over that hole and let Private Fat Ass sit on there with a hot bowl of chili.
Well Sarge, it's the darndest thing, we set up camp, a latrine, and when Private Fat Ass started dumpin', we heard him screaming.

as long as I have to work 2 crappy jobs to make my meager ends meet, while sitting on a Bachelor's Degree, staring down humongus student loan debt, I can't vote for the encumbant. It's as simple as that.
Because before Bush, making ends meet was hunky-dory no problem. Come on.
If that's really the criteria, that means you voted for Bush in 2000, right? I mean, this isn't the 1950's anymore... getting by has been hard for a long time.
Not too mention ignoring that unemployment is going down, and all signs are pointing to a nice recovery for 2004... increased corporate spending, more jobs, etc.

Nice little quandry we have here. Economic indicators are up. The stock market is rising. Productivity is up. GDP is up. Everything looks good.
So where are the jobs? Growth has been slow, and the last months job creation was below expectations. The average salary of the jobs created are $8,000 less than the jobs that we had lost before.
However, as I said, economic indicators are up. SOMEBODY has to be doing good. I don't want to be accused of being a commie, so I'll let you put the pieces together.

Yeah...that's exactly the kind of things people living on the edge want/need to hear! These are the kind of pep-talks I got from my Republican father for the 9 months I was out of work and trying to decide if I had money for laundry or dinner.

Since the Supreme Court granted Bush the presidency, I have been laid-off three times, seen my salary reduced by half and my debts increase ten-fold. Meanwhile, the deficit has exploded. My current job in none too fulfilling, yet I'm damned grateful to have it. Comparing my situation with my friends and family, it is clear I'm the rule, rather than the exception.
I'm not such a simpleton to believe that Bush alone is responsible for my (or anyone else's) economic woes. Yet I'm troubled that in the past three years he has shown virtually no interest in the economy. I guess all his friends are still rich. His only bright idea thus far has been tax cuts. Most economists, on either side of the political spectrum, find this approach laughable. What did you do with your $300 refund check? I put mine towards paying off credit card accrued during seven months of unemployment.
I sincerely hope Bush's plan works and a recovery does come in 2004, this is the sort of crow I wouldn't mind eating.

Congratulations on clearing up your debt. You're a better man than I.
Like I tried to explain in my post, I don't hold Bush responsible for my situation. There are obviously many factors. I was trying to show that many unemployed people have had to resort to going into debt in order to pay their rent, car insurance, grocery bill, etc.

With or without the support of Republican presidents, Hussein would've still been just as much a bastard.
In the 80s, we overlooked his evil because we were so preoccupied with Iran.
Now we are doing the reverse with Iraq.
This has happened so many times before, where out of expediency, we have backed a bastard and in the end it always comes back to bite us on the ass.

We caught Saddam. Good, now lets get over this short-lived victory and look to what's really at hand: Where's the weapons of Mass Destruction that were the real reason of this war? Where's Bin Laden and what happened to the link between him and Saddam? Why is it that the Taliban is re-establishing it's grip on Afghanistan? How are we going to pay for the war?
I know these are the questions every conservative hates now a days, but they are the real issues that will matter at the end of the day. Really now, can the capture of Saddam actually decrease the attacks in Iraq? The attacks are continuing without any "commercial break". And lets be real, the attacks are a direct result of our occupation in Iraq. It's the message that the Iraqis don't want us there. We got rid of Saddam, ok, now they want us out. When the public can actually realize what we've done, Bush's goose'll be cooked.

Both your cases are telling of the economy under Bush: (these are hypothetical, since I don't know your specific cases very well)... if you were able to hold on to your job, you probably did well, since not only did you probably get ovetime pay cause other people got laid off and the work deficit had to be filled (thus, the rise in productivity numbers), but also, interest rates are way down, encouraging refinancing and consolidation of debts.
If you were laid off a few times, it's been tough, since the lack of income means more debt, and unemployment insurance hasn't been extended. Additionally, more jobs have been lost than created, so it's hard to get a new one.

My view, and for the record, I am neither a Repub or a Dem. I believe in a contiuum of issue-based views...
"Anyone wanna bet the Democratic candidates are pissed right now."
My Opinion:
I don't care. I also don't care if the Repubs are elated right now.
If this type of scenario occurred with Clinton or anyone else, I'd be, well done, you got that son of a bitch Stalin Wanna-Be. This guy was a living breathing monster to these people. Did you hear the weeping when his face was shown at first? This, in the long-run, may do wonders. Being treated like a monkey i heard? Looked like a medical exam/DNA swab, mouth check, scar check to me.
String him up? Shoot him? I have a better idea: give him a fair and just; and let him meet his fate.
We have done so much, many say too much in Iraq. I agree; we've done some great things, and some not so great in all of this.
The image of a disheveled Saddam being treated humanely, the look of resignation, but not of fear so much, as 'well, ya got me.' The power of these images to the Iraqi people can not be overestimated.
There are Iraqis who fully believe that this man was Superhuman. I don't mean figuratively. And if that sounds nuts I got two words: Jonathon Edward. Seeing that he is indeed a human, not a UberMensch, and that we werent savage, that we didn't drag a corpse out, that [it is being reported so far] no shots were fired. What an opportunity.
My View: We could've done this better, I mean beginning with Bush 1 and Desert Shield/Storm. This end does not justify the means. The capture of this man should be celebrated like hell, but then become a point on a timeline for real change. There is an opportunity here, to do this right.
The Big Bad USA has a rep worldwide to some as a bully sticking it's nose in. Well, we stuck it in, and took a lot of shit. Can we now show the world we're not trying to run things completely?
First: Data. Do anything humanly possible to keep him alive and get him to talk. If not him; now that he is captured, many of his already captured staff may well start singing a different tune.
Let's PROVE what a fuck this guy was. He, you don't have to convince me he's a homicidal ex-dictator, but there are a few bazillion Qs that could use some answering:
-Some accounting of the tens of thousands of deaths at his hands. Who, what, where, when, how. Closure to so many Iraqi people who have had family, sons, daughters, etc. utterly disappear.
-A full accounting of the Money, the weapons, the WMDs: were they there, what was their nature, exactly. We know what we know now. Is it indeed correct? Part of me wants him guillotined with a blade-Cam on the 50-yard line during halftime at the Super Bowl. Make it Pay-per-view, and give the money to the soldiers. And victims familes.
But if we're going to show the world that we are a superpower, but not the Bully some claim us to be; I say the trial's got to be by the people of Iraq. There may be precedent here that changes everything. I do not know of the conventions of this; are there Nuremberg type rules for this?
I say we take the high road, treat him fair, try him, punish him, whatever. But let's get some info out of this guy. I'm trying to look past this towards the next ten years. It just can't keep going on like this. We threw a TON of force at Saddam at Osama, for Good reason. But many see it as too much, or too costly.
How many times can you get a second chance at your outlook in history? Meaning to all the nay-sayers who said we celebrated early [i agree] and shouldn't topple statues [i agree] or land on carriers or serve turkey [i thought that kicked ass]; maybe Bush and the USA can show the world a Better View of the USA, and that Freedom and Democracy might not be such a bad idea, as foreign as it is to these people.

There were gems like this
Well, tha capture of Sadaam takes the 'failure to capture' issue off the table.
Now that the economy is picking up (mall was packed yesterday), Iraq is getting better, prescription drugs on the way, education spending at an all-time high, no further terrorist attacks--what is left?
Oh, yes, the capture of Bin Laden.
If that happens, we are completely sunk.
And there was some fun conspiracy theories, like
I have thought for some time now that as we near the 2004 election the bush bandits would start pulling things out of their bag of tricks to continue to dupe the American public. As we can all see on the news they finally captured a pathetic Saddam hiding in a hole in the ground. Well good for the Iraqi people. I would expect at some point they will bring Bin Ladin out too before the election everything this administration does is choreographed to the max. Am I paranoid? perhaps!
Yes, perhaps.
You will be pleased, though, because not long afterwards, your democratic / liberal brethren immediately began with the OMG SHOULD HAVE CAUGHT BIN LADEN INSTEAD~! rhetoric, and today are now 100% confident again that the American people will be able to see past this administration's "lies" and vote in a Democrat.
I wonder who they'll blame when Bush wins in 2004......I don't think they'll be able to use the "He STOLE the election!" argument again.....

The lies people are pissed off about are the ones about the imminence of the threat that Iraq posed.
Like the ones about the "reconstituted" nuke program,
Or the threat that Saddam would give WMDs to terrorists (when the only intel on the subject said he wouldn't)
Or the implication that we couldn't give the inspectors more time because Saddam would get his nuke before the summer was over
Or the implication that Saddam would hit us with a nuke
Or the one about "All the intelligence" being unequivocal about Saddam's WMDs...
Just to name a few.

Would you RATHER that they sat around and said to each other "Oh pity us! I guess this is the death of us! Let's just wait around for Hillary in '08. Let's scrap this whole 'two party system' because it obviously doesn't work?"
No - there are legitimate concerns about the truthfulness of this administration, and those that choose not to see it are just as guilty as those who looked past Clinton's lies.

Look, Bush is getting WAY TOO much credit for this. If I see one more person on TV hand Bush the election I will puke. This does NOT justify the war in ANY WAY..........yet. All this does is reinstill confidence in this administartion's ability to carry out this war, the one issue that Bush was getting blasted about. Again, another year terrorist attacks against our troops will render this capture moot.
However, if this leads to a significant reduction or complete elimination of attacks in the next few months, then this is very good for Bush. This is certainly possible. It isn't clear if Saddam was running the attacks, but he had to at least have knowledge of at least some of these cells, or documents pertaining to the cells. Today's captures proved that.
A more remote possibility is him revealing where WMDs are. I don't know why he would, and if there weren't any he couldn't possibly do that. I just hope he doesn't lead us on a wild goose chase throughout Iraq. Listening to Bush and Rumsfeld, however, I don't think they'll believe anything he has to say.
But if those two things don't happen, this is nothing but a short term victory for Bush, nothing that will carry into the election.

Speaking of Bush lies, I, uh, (straightens tie) have a nice little collection of them.
Next time you see the latest numbers on the deficit, keep this bit of rhetorical fancy in mind:
"We will not deny, we will not ignore, we will not pass along our problems to other congresses, other presidents, and other generations. We will confront them with focus and clarity and courage"
That's our Dubster!
It's from his State of the Union speech 11 months ago.
He was talking about his tax cuts running up a debt that others would have to pay.
Let's see if he "takes personal responsibility" for this one.

If Saddam actually had the WMDs, then why weren't they used to defend his country, defend his city, defesnd his sons or even to defend him?
On a different note - and giving credit to the whiney Liberals of the world - did anyone see the Washington State congressman (or was he their Senator?) who speculated that the capture of Saddam was completely motivated by politics - that we knew where he was all along and were just waiting.
While I'll agree that the timing was perfect (wipes away all the bad press about the President shunning other countries, and does seem to derail the Dean train, at least for now), not only would 100s of people had to have known about it (and those kind of secrets don't stay secret), but I still believe firmly that this administration wanted him dead...wrapped in plastic.
Hey gang, when Mojo locks up the thread, whaya say we riot?
Oh, I hope Lockjaw McMojo doesn't lock this! It hasn't strayed too far from Saddam, has it?

Because it wouldn't be prudent to use WMDs (nuclear, biological, or chemical) within your own country to repel an attack.

And we all know what tender concern Saddam had for his people.

I wasn't talking about his people -- I meant HIM, his sons, his security forces. Use WMDs on your own soil and you run the risk of contaminating (if not destroying) a good part of your country and your assets.
EDIT -- and yourself!

Damn you AJ, damn you damn you damn you. That one was supposed to delay you for much longer than it did.
One thing we need to keep in mind is that U.S. intelligence was intercepting communications with Iraqi division commanders on the use of WMDs. We had the impression that they had them.
Well, they didn't. It was a bluff. They wanted us to believe they had them.
They also wanted the Iranians to think they had them. To the Iraqis, the WMDs were a force multiplier, and the threat of them was a deterrent to the Iranians and would cover for the dismal shape the Iraqi army was in.
This time last year it was poorly led, poorly trained and poorly equipped.
They saw the Iranians as a bigger threat than anyone else. Take away the threat of WMDs and Iraq is fucked as far as Iran is concerned.
Thus the dance with the inspectors and the international community.
Sound plausable?

Alleged or not, I would hope that our government would be investigating this, or obtaining our own copies of this document.
I'm guessing they are, but Newsweek is also on the case: Memo in Telegraph may be a forgery (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3741646/)
Ironically, even the Iraqi National Congress of Ahmed Chalabi, which has been vocal in claiming ties between Al Qaeda and Saddam's regime, was dismissive of the new Telegraph story. "The memo is clearly nonsense," an INC spokesman told NEWSWEEK.
Contacted by Newsweek, The Sunday Telegraph's Con Coughlin acknowledged that he could not prove the authenticity of the document. He said that while he got the memo about Mohammed Atta and Baghdad from a "senior" member of the Iraqi Governing Council who insisted it was "genuine," he and his newspaper had "no way of verifying it. It's our job as journalists to air these things and see what happens," he said.
And this, my friends, is why you should never trust the British press. This guy has a retarded view of what the job of a journalist is. Let's just remember in the future that this guy thinks it's his job to raise any theory without any verification whatsoever.

All the liberals who have read one of these raise your hand.
I think those are put up there to keep conservatives busy and out of the way of real policy-makers.
Hardy har har.
Apparently, given that this blog had around 700 posts for one day, I suppose SOMEONE is paying attention to it.
And given the Dean love & Bush hate thrown around, I don't imagine it's conservatives running it.
After reading through it, though, I'm quite glad these particular liberals are more busy with the blogs than actually going out and making policy.
aking a quick look, the only blog I see is on the DNC main homepage...anyway, not to sound like another liberal conspiracy theorists, I don't believe any sentament anyone writes on any of these message boards because (quite frankly) there are people of other opinions (ahem) trolling them, looking to start trouble.
Well dude, I didn't pull this out of my ass. The blog does really exist. Google it. Hey, the Google guy is friendly to your side, it'll be there.
Yeah, there are some trolls, but trust me, the trolls don't outnumber the true believers.
Unless he does steal the election again.
Oh come now. Stop eating those sour grapes.

Last night I heard on the news that U.S. intelligence places Atta in the U.S. at a time when the Telegraph "document" has him in europe.
And is it true that the Telegraph "document" had him travelling under the name of "D. B. Cooper"?
