Michael Caine, who has 'officially' signed on to play Alfred for three pictures no less, talks about some casting and other things. Here's highlights.
Cillian Murphy, Jim in 28 Days Later, has definitely signed on as 1 of the villains, more than likely The Scarecrow.
Rumors are that Chris Cooper is one of the actors being considered for the role of the other villain. Although it hasn't been specifically stated, most people think it's Ra's al Ghul.
Caine says director Christopher Nolan is also extremely intereseted in Viggo Mortensen for the role of the second villain. A great choice, if it is indeed al Ghul. A little makeup may be needed to age him slightly, but he's certainly got the chops to do it.
As far as plot is concerned, Caine says that Alfred plays a much larger role and that the film starts with Bruce as a child and shows a lot more of Afred in the fatherly role. Also in the interview Caine talks about Christopher Nolan's views on the Dark Knight:
"[Nolan] said, 'We're going to have a human hero in Batman. He's powerful because he does pushups. Where does he get all his weapons? Because he's a multibillionaire, and he's in the arms business, so he gets the secret weapons instantly. Why does he wear the bloody suit? To scare the s--t out of people, because he doesn't really want to fight."
And of course, don't forget that Christian Bale is efinitely playing Wayne/Batman, just in case anyone forgot.
What more is there to say? If things keep going this way, Clooney, Schwarzenegger and Schumacher will, mercifully, be relegatd to ancient history.
Get a Batman hard-on (http://www.darkhorizons.com/news03/031211a.php)

If there was a Bruce Campbell bio-pic....i'd want Jim Carrey, he looks a lot like him.
So far this movie may be the #3 best Batman movie (Behind the 60's flick and the first Batman)
BTW what has Christian Bale done in the past, my mind draws a blank

So, did Michael Gough die? I thought he was the only perfect casting in the 1990's Batman movies. I thought Michael Caine was a good choice for Austin Powers' dad, but Alfred?
And 3 movies? why don't they just concentrate on making one good one for now?

Seems you left out Katie Holmes as Bruce's love interest "Rachel." If the love interest is Rachel, it may lean more towards The Reaper from Batman:Year 2 rather than Ra's.
The Reaper story was adapted sorta for Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

I have some more Batman Casting News. They are saying that Ken Watanabe from the Last Samurai is slated to play the Demon's Head Ra's Al Guhl.
Also they are casting Morgan Freeman as Lucious Fox.
I know they also have Liam Neeson in this movie as Henri Ducard.
All in all it's looking like that this is going to be good with no actors who are known to overact and ham up their roles.
Now only if Catwoman and Superman would have followed the same formula.

Better than a Beyonce as Lois Lane, I guess. But i don't know about this. Watanabe is a good actor, but I'm not sure about this.
Morgan Freeman as Lucius is kingsize, though.

Wow.
If it's true, that would be pretty fucking cool. Watanabe is a stone-cold badass.
What the hell is Guhl's race in the comic in the first place? He always seemed Middle Eastern to me...

Ra's is middle eastern in the comics, if you read his origin. He was some sort of arab or something, from what I can recall.
And latest I'm hearing is Watanabe won't be in, but that may be a false rumor. Liam was supposed to play Ra's, but due to scheduling conflicts, he has the part of Ducard.

Henri Ducard seems to be a new character. Depending what you read, he's either Batman's mentor or Ra's right hand man.

Ubu has been Ra's bodyguard since his first appearance in the comic book in the 70's. I guess Watanabe might be Ubu, as well, but it seems he's Ra's.

So the title has been announced as Batman Begins. That's not a title I'm happy with. Not at all. I'd prefer Intimidation Game even over that. If all the other stuff that's been going around wasn't so good, I'd be worried, but since everything else has been pretty much perfect, I'm not sweating this too much. Shit, even Ken Watanabe looked like he's starting to get into the role of Ra's at the Oscars last night. Based on what I saw, he's got the right look for it. Since Christian Bale, Cillian Murphy were both fantastic casting, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Liam Neeson, all these guys are good for their roles, so I don't think they'd throw all that away by casting a shitty Ra's.

realistically, if someone were to go out and fight crime like batman, he's more likely to wear some sort of bullet proof costume than a cloth one. And if you've seen pictures of Bale, he doesn't need fake muscles on a suit.

Not so scarey crow (http://latinoreview.com/films_2004/comiccon/cc-batman.html)
While we're on the subject of Batman, I was having this discussion with a friend of mine over the weekend, let me know what you think. He seemed to be under the impression that Batman and Bruce and all the other characters were going to be English. He said he'd read it somewhere. Now it's true that Gotham doesn't have to be in America, and it's not New York, and alot of characters, including Bruce himself, are being played by British actors, and I guess there's no reason Batman couldn't be English, but it just doesn't seem right to me. I dunno.

So then wouldn't Alfred have to be the one American character to balance that out?
It's an interesting idea, though it's not the case here. But you're right, them there's a lot of Brits in that cast...

That's true for basically any comic book costume. This Batman has two advantages...it's going to be a dark movie, since Batman almost only comes at night...and two, the filmmakers are totally going with the "expanding/shrinking cape" for dramatic purposes. If the costume looks too ridiculous in any shot, BAM, just do something cool with the cape.

I just was pleasantly surprised. I always thought one of the best things written into the Hulk comic series in the last 10-15 years was the revelation of Banner's fucked up childhood, especially his relationship with his abusive father, and how it fed into the Hulk existing in the first place. I thought it was really a smart move to fit that into the movie, and that it was really well done. I especially liked the splitscreen work, mainly because it;s something filmmakers woefully underuse, and Lee used it expertly. The movie "felt" like a comic book the entire time, and that was cool.
Plus, I thought the CGI looked great, even though I hate extensive CGI use. I just wish they had thrown more of an army at him, as opposed to a specialized task force. Oh well.
The "Hulk dogs" were in the movie so briefly, and fit in just fine, so I never understood why people hated them so much.
When all is said and done, I think the movie still made about $100 million, and is easily set up for a sequel, so despite whatever flaws it had, I'd happily see another Hulk film, and hope there is one.
Especially instead of shit flicks like "Daredevil," "The Punisher," and "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen."

what i know of the hulk's repressed anger is from issue #377. his dad was a drunk(i think) who abused his bruce and his mom. the movie showed a mad scientist father, not an abusive one.
after watching the dvd, it was clear Lee wanted to bring his origin into the 21st century, showing that shit with his cells. but it would've been perfectly fine to just give us his origin like it always was. scientist gets caught in an accident, scientist releases inner rage in a ghastly manner. there was no need to change that. why the fuck would you disrespect the franchise, the original writers, and the fans with this new cockamamie origin. fuck.
visually, Lee did a great job, much like Crouching Tiger. but like that movie, the plot was ass, long dragged-out ass. the final battle was an excercise in squinting. fuck.
oh, and i wish batman's new suit didnt have so many distinct lines. he's just starting out, for chrissakes, give him somthing simpler.

They showed him hitting Bruce, insulting and yelling at him, and then fianlly trying to kill him. Seems pretty damn abusive to me.
Plus the parallels between father and son both as scientists worked for me. I always prefer connections like that as opposed to just, "he was a dick dad, and then he was gone." This gives Bruce even more reasons to be fucked up, because he no doubts hates and fears his father, but also probably hates and fears the fact he's so much like him.
The origin didn't bug me too much. Since it was clearly set in modern times, how are they going to explain America setting off a nuke-sized weapon just for the sake of an experiment? We can't do that anymore without the whole world knowing. The same lesson was there...man fucks with science/science fucks with man. Boom, done.
And I think they could streamline the Batman outfit down the line. This is effectively "year one," so it kinda makes sense he hasn't refined his tech yet. As the movies go by, it'll improve and grow more advanced and less bulky.

but I am now officially turgid for this film.
Using big words only makes you seem smarter if you use them correctly.
Main Entry: turúgid
Pronunciation: 't&r-j&d
Function: adjective
Etymology: Latin turgidus, from turgEre to be swollen
1 : being in a state of distension : SWOLLEN, TUMID <turgid limbs>; especially : exhibiting turgor
2 : excessively embellished in style or language : BOMBASTIC, POMPOUS
- turúgidúiúty /"t&r-'ji-d&-tE/ noun
- turúgidúly /'t&r-j&d-lE/ adverb
- turúgidúness noun
I think the Batman trailer gave blakjeebus gas.
And I like the parallels of father and son too, but I don't like power comes from the father to the son, so father has superpowers too and uses them against son. And the Hulk dogs looked like the dog from the Mask.

Fuck you, cock faggot!
turúgid ( P ) Pronunciation Key (t–rjd)
Excessively ornate or complex in style or language; grandiloquent:
Swollen or distended, as from a fluid; bloated
Let's see how this works. "I started out excited, but I am now officially turgid (Swollen or distended, as from a fluid) for this film."
I think anyone can plainly see that I was making a sexual reference to my pleasure at seeing the ongoing goodness of this film. Since my penis would be erect, or swollen with blood (a fluid), I think turgid is a completely acceptable term. In fact, I've heard it used countless times in this context. So fuck you and fuck your correction.
Hit up a remedial English class, then come see me when your command of the language has improved. You broken down English speakin', barely literate, low education havin' motherfucker.

Well, the bulk of the film is being shot IN Chicago. They just need that stretch of road because nobody really uses it, and it's easy to close off for movie use without fucking up business routes. I've seen footage of the Batmobile hauling ass on the tight streets under the El in Chi-town, and despite it's size, it can really move, and looks great.
http://abclocal.go.com/wls/news/080204_ns_batmobile.html
http://www.croqaudile.com/index.php?page=clips&id=4114
The local Chicago news stations have been showing clips of the filming, including one of Bale doing a bunch of stunts around the rooftops, wearing what looked to be the Batsuit minuse the cowl/mask and cape. The good news is that the suit moves much more naturally, and it's not like watching someone dressed in a rubber tank like it was in the previous films. Bale was basically moving like a guy in tights. The bad news (depending on who you ask) is that his Bat-package looked gi-normous, and will probably scare me to death on the big screen.
http://abclocal.go.com/wls/news/080704_ns_batman.html
There are STILL casting rumors going around, the latest that Guy Pearce is in the film briefly as Harvey Dent, potentially setting him up to play Two-Face, and hopefully make us forget the Tommy Lee Jones abomination. Still wish we could have seen more of smooooooth Billy Dee Williams in the last films as that character...oh well...
And I'm less worried about the "too many villains" factor...apparently, the Scarecrow IS the main villian, played by the lead actor from "28 Days Later," whereas R'as A'l Ghul(sp?) is more of a background figure, who is really being set up to be a major villain in LATER films. There's apparently a big pointer to the Joker somehwere in the film, though I don't know the specifics (It sounded like some guy playing with a playing card with a very familiar face on it)...
I hope they don't continue the "kill the villains off" nonsense of the previous films. That always felt completely wrong, and usually made zero sense, even when they forced the horrible "Joker killed Batman's parents" cliche on us.

I thought that Ra's al Ghul was going to be the villain in the second film (him having a smaller part in the first to set him up for the next)? Frankly, I think the Joker should probably be kept off until the third film or so.

Ra's might be even further off than that...the implication is he'll be a "background villain"...a constant presence, but not in some cliched "final battle" until a later film.

Since this is basically a brand new series, can we start over and call it "The Batman" or "Batman" or something other than "Batman Begins."
Just a bad title, imo. I keep waiting for the rest of it - "Batman begins...WHAT?!"
They need to just pretend that the other four don't exist, and go nuts.
That said - I can't wait!

Yeah, I thought it was a bad title too, but you never know, it may grow on you.
But if they are starting over again and totally erasing the history of all the other Batman movies, then they should have just called it "Batman".

from what i've read, they're gonna save the joker for the second (or even a third) ...
this has become nolan's project, and if it's a hit, he'll probablt be given all the creative control to distance the franchise from the prior flicks ...
i think there's also some mob, ganglord contingent as an adversary as well ...

[center] Whoring my band one post at a time
<p><font color="Navy"><font size="2">I just got back from a midnight screening. Holy
fuck. Never has a movie so completely met and exceeded my already high
expectations. It not only sets a new bar for comic book movies, it sets
the bar for all big event movies. It did everything it should have done
and did things that you don't expect in these movies. The first 30
minutes are incredibly emotional. The before Batman and after Batman
segments were both equally excellent, and for much different reasons.
It takes everything done right in the Spiderman and X-Men movies and
does it ten times better and jettisons almost everything that didn't
work those movies. After Star Wars, this was exactly what I needed.</font></font></p>
<p><font color="Navy"><font size="2">First the bad things. </font></font></p>
<p><font color="Navy"><font size="2">-Bale's
Batman voice was a bit over the top. I know what they were going for, I
know what Bale was trying to do, but it was just too forced, not enough
that it's laughable, but not perfect.</font></font></p>
<p><font color="Navy"><font size="2">-I hate the sappy shit in
comic book movies. You know, those scenes in Spiderman were the crowd
starts cheering Spiderman on, or where Spiderman gets a pep talk from a
kid, or Wolverine has to live with a bunch of loveable youngsters.
Well, there is one very small scene with Batman and a kid. It was
quick, Batman did not act out of character, it was done as well as
possible, but I can't possibly express how much I hate these types of
scenes.</font></font></p>
<p><font color="Navy"><font size="2">-One minor plot hole that I can't talk about without
spoilers. They tried to explain it, but it was a bit unbelievable to
me. I'll talk about it after more of you have seen it.</font></font></p>
<p><font color="Navy"><font size="2">-Until the
last half, it moves at a fairly brisk pace, and at the beginning you
are just kind of thrown in. I liked it, but it might be a negative to
some. </font></font></p>
<p><font color="Navy"><font size="2">That's it. Now the good stuff.</font></font></p>
<p><font color="Navy"><font size="2">-This movie was
an absolute acting clinic. The only guy who did a bad job was Tom
Wilkinson as Carmine Falcone, a normally fine actor who was miscast.
Other than that, wow. Liam Neeson and Michael Caine were incredible.
Bale would have been just as good except for his Batman voice. Gary
Oldman, Rutger Hauer, Cillian Murphy, Morgan Freeman and even Katie
Holmes were all great. Even the smaller characters with no name actors
were doing great jobs, the guy who played Bruce Wayne's father chief
among them. When you have this many actors this much on their game it's
impossible not to become completely immersed.</font></font></p>
<p><font color="Navy"><font size="2">-The way they cut
to flashbacks and then back to the present when doing the training
portion of the film was great. The way they would go from specific
flashbacks directly into his training and how it is motivating him was
ingenious.</font></font></p>
<p><font color="Navy"><font size="2">-Gotham City. Wow. Huge, grounded in reality yet
unreal. A much better environment than Burton's Gotham. More truer to

I just came back from seeing this movie and i must say also, i was impressed by it, its been a long time since i have seen a good movie in the theater, I'm still not a big fan of the new batmobile but this one kicked ass, by far the best adaptation of batman on the big screen.

<p>Saw it.</p><p>Liked it a helluva lot. </p><p>If I HAD to come up with a complaint, I would agree with Hbox that some of the editing was waaay too fast. There were a few times when I couldn't tell who was hitting who. </p><p>And, they took their sweet time getting the movie up to speed. The groundwork at the beginning was well-laid...but it went on just a tad too long.</p><p>All in all...this movie is a strong 9 on a 10 scale. Minimal CGI and a well written story! BOOM GOES THE F'CKING DYNAMITE!!!</p>

<p>This movie rocked it HARD.</p><p>I was getting a little annoyed with Bale's Batman voice at times, but overall, it worked. Sometimes he sounded downright scary. But in the end, he has like 100 times more dialogue as Batman than any of the previous 4 Batmen did combined, so it's probably kinda tough to keep that voice going.</p><p>Everything just seemed to click...not a great film, but just a perfectly excellent "dumb" summer blockbuster that's slightly too smart for its own good. It's packed with tons of literal comic book psychology, but it's still a fun movie. Like the "Spider-Man" and "X-Men" films, it felt like I was really watching a comic book come to life on the screen, so in that it succeeds a thousand times over. Anyone expecting more or less is really just setting themselves up to be let down on purpose.</p>

<p>Well, how much did BB even cost to make?</p><p>I dunno, can it really be expected to do "Spider-Man"-like numbers? Yeah, it's a comic book, but Batman in any medium rarely has the mass family appeal a character like Spider-Man or Superman or even the X-Men have, and that'll automatically shave a lot of dollars off right there. Plus, you can't underestimate how badly the LAST franchise left the moviegoing public feeling burned...this new one has an uphill battle going all the way, but still, it'll easily break 100 million here in the States, and that plus more overseas...it's next to impossible for there to not at least be ONE sequel.</p>

<p>One more thing:</p><p><font style="background-color: #000000">I didn't understand why exactly Rutger's character was presented as a villian. YES, he fired Lucious, but even Lucious himself said earlier in the film that he was "lucky to have a job". I didn't see any kind of evil corpporate villany, on the levels of Max Schreck or OCP or something.</font></p><p><font style="background-color: #000000" /></p><p><font style="background-color: #000000">Yeah, hi, this is Rutger.</font></p>

<p><font color="Navy"><font size="2">As for the first spoiler vision: I think that
only applied to his cape. That hit him in the chest, and i believe the
cape and chest were two completely different parts. And I'm sure the
armor had some kind of thing to protect it from electricity.</font></font></p><p><font color="Navy"><font size="2">As for the second spoiler vision, I'll use my own spoiler vision: <font style="background-color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"><font color="#000000">I
think there was a bit of "All CEOs are evil" kind of mentality going on
there, but I think they implied that he was trying to cover up the
microwave emitter by having him fire Fox and the very inference that it
was lost. Plus, I don't think they wanted to present him as evil per
se, but just someone who was a far cry from thomas Wayne, someone who
cared more about profits unlike Wayne who geniunely wanted to do good.<br />
</font></font></font></font></p><p><font color="#000000"><span style="background-color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"><font size="2">Also wouldn't that microwave emitter seriously fuck up humans, who are mostly water?</font></span></font></p>

was very hard to believe that Katie Holmes character wouldn't get
seriously fucked up in the head. I would have shit my pants during that
chase, running over police cars, going faster than hell. All while
Batman is sitting right next to you, and we saw how Crane saw Batman
under the drug. Crane said that the mind can only take so much. I think
that chase crossed that thresh hold. A little nit pick, to be sure.</font></p><p><font color="#000000"><span style="background-color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">A
bigger problem. Am I seriously to believe that no cops died in that
chase? He fucking ran over a full police car, laid fucking mines for a

hard to swallow. If it wasn't so fucking exciting, I'd have a real

<p>A guy on another board I visit watched the Adam

that one. It's like Batman Begins on Earth 2, great for exactly the
opposite reasons. here's some of the dialogue:</p><p><span class="postbody">Commissioner Gordon: Penguin, Joker, Riddler...
and CATWOMAN, too! The sum of the angles of that rectangle is too
monstrous to contemplate!
<br />
Batman: We've been given the plainest warning: they're working together to take over...
<br />
Chief O'Hara: Take over WHAT, Batman: Gotham City?
<br />
Batman: Any *2* of them would try that!
<br />
Commissioner Gordon: The whole country?
<br />
Batman: If it were 3 of them, I would say yes, but *4*? Their minimum objective must be... THE ENTIRE WORLD.
</span></p><p><span class="postbody">Gordon: "You mean, where there's a fish there could be... a <span style="font-style: italic;">Penguin?</span>"

anyone else not like the Ra'as twist (from Ken Wantabe to Liam Neason,
I mean I like Neason and all, but I don't remember anything like that
happenening in the comics or anything</font></font><p> </p><p><font size="2"><span style="background-color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">I
loved it because it fit perfectly with what "Ducard" was saying
earlier. And there are many ways to see it. First, you could say that
Neeson was really Ra's Al Ghul, and that fit perfectly with Wayne's
final test. He got cut, so he cut a bunch of the other ninjas so Ducard
thought he had found him.</span></font></p><p><font size="2"><span style="background-color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Or
you could say that there is no real Ra's Al Ghul, that he is an
abstract creation, like Batman, to strike fear in enemies. You saw how
Falcone was scared. Remember what Neeson said in Wayne Manor: "Is Ra's
Al Ghul immortal? Are his methods supernatural?" Everything is a
question, because as Ducard said in Wayne's training, men fear what
they do not know.</span><br />
</font></p><p><span style="background-color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"><font size="2">It was a departure
from the comics, where Al Ghul did not train Wayne, and where he is
undoubtedly a singular person and immortal. But I think it worked, it
fit in with the themes of the film. And even if he isn't dead, I doubt
we will see him again in the movies. Not with the number of great
Batman enemies. Hell, the Joker could take up a couple films by himself.</font></span><br />

<p>Just came back from seeing it a second time, doing my part to earn that sequel,</p><p>2 minor technical nitpicks, One already mentioned was the editing, a little choppy, should be able to see Batman kicking ass a little more clearer</p><p>Second was the sound editing at least in my theater some of the music cues and sound effect drowned out some of the dialouge</p><p>Lastly considering the damage done by Joel Schumacher and Tim Burton to the Batman mythos this movie had a steep hill to climb to erase those abortions.</p>
When i first arrived you were all such jerks
But now i've come to love your quirks
<p>Yeah, I've changed my opinion on the action
scenes. The style fit with Batman's style of fighting, where he moves
too quick for the criminals and they can't find him. The style works in
that instance.</p><p>Problem is that style is used where not
appropriate. Like in the opening fight in the prison. Or the train
fight. Those were straightforward fights that were nearly impossible to
keep track of.<br />

<p>Ok for all of you trying to keep up in spoiler vision (HBox this means YOU), try this one on for size: <font style="background-color: #000000">Ok I did not see the movie but from what I am taking from the spoiler it sounds like Ra's Ah'Gul was the one to train Batman. If this is true and they are wondering "Why?" since it did not happen in the comics, the explination would be that Ra's WAS immortal from the Lazarus Pit (read the books) but he was SLOWLY getting old and he wanted to find a fitting replacement to take over his empire. He always respected batman in the books and kept grooming him to take over and marry his daughter. Maybe that is why they did the whole plot twist.</font></p><p><font style="background-color: #000000" /></p><p><font style="background-color: #ffffff">Just a thought.</font></p>

<p>Coolest f'n movie I've seen in years. I don't care about the comic book aspect of it, but this movie just rocked. Loved the whole background story too - that really made the film. </p><p>See it on IMAX.</p>
