Are Jews a race or a religion?

People can't decide on this one. If you read the Bible you would think they are a race. If you look at them you would think they are just white people who share the same religion. When I say race I mean they share some common genes not present in any other group of people.

Could it be that Jews where once a race but then when they migrated to Europe they where whited out?

"judaism" is a religion.

"jews" are not a race. i believe, however, that "jews" may be an ethnicity. although, maybe not even that...

I think being jewish is a religion. There isn't a Jewland. One can be Israeli or from there.


Like catholic isn't a race. There are Irish catholics and so on just like there are russian jews.

I think a religion. While their heritage is linked by a geographic region, you can convert to judaism. I can't convert to Italian.

I think that technically they are.

I'm not talking about American jews, but rather Jews from Israel. I seem to remember reading something about how the original jews from that area came from somewhere else and that they had a darker complexion. They weren't exactly black, but they were not exactly white either. Closer to arabs I think.

When I say race I mean they share some common genes not present in any other group of people.there are no common genes within the "races"... there is nothing genetically or biologically different between blacks and whites, for example.

i don't know about this specifically, but the supreme court has done a amazing amount of really stupid things when it comes to race and stuff.

there was one (old) case in which a line of women (grandmother, mother, and daughter) claiming they were of native american descent were suing for their freedom. the court gave them their freedom, but you want to know why? because they looked white. that's right. this is supposed to be law. they said that, because the girl had long, straight hair, and light skin, and because the people in her community regarded her as white, she wouldn't have to be a slave. fabulous.

I think like most here that being "Jewish" is indicative of a religion, not a race or nationality. They are defined (And unfortunately persecuted) ultimately by their beliefs and faith. All of the supposed physical and social stereotypes are secondary.

to be a "jew" is unique in that it is both a religion and an ethnicity. What was once a nationality has, through the diaspora, been fortified into a unique ethnic background, despite where their "homeland" may be.

The reason for this is because whereever Jews went, they were persecuted and forced to live in seperate societies, only marrying with their own. rarely did new genetic fodder come into the mix. When it did, it gave rise to two distinct "types" in the Jewish ethnicity : the Ashkenazi and the Sephardim. (most American Jews are Ashkenazi)

This is how jews can be jews and not be religious. Its in the blood.
