Oh so many to choose from! One day I'll make a comprehensive list, but the reason I began playing must always be #1:
Keith Richards. A rhythm guitar god, his lead playing on "Sympathy For The Devil" is still the nastiest I've ever heard.

Again, GVAC, I must wholeheartedly concur. When i hear Richards, there are times when I begin to weep with pure pleasure, He has a gift from God(He also has good taste in Irish Whiskey-Jameson's-like me)

MY OPPINION ONLY:
it takes more than speed and notes to make a great guitarist. I perfer players with feel/soul rather than teqnique. Bob mould is creative, Keith richards is god, Thurston moore of sonic youth is amazing, buddy holly has very unique and beautiful chord progressions, lenny kravitz has soul, but i guess my fav is still Jerry Garcia. like em or not, the dude unleashed pure beauty in his melodic leads and melodies...vernon reid of living colour very under rated as well` as is dan murphy of Soul Asylum.. sid miguiness of the letterman band rox 2. way too many..

Lot's of decent choices
presented so far hear, but I
still would have to go with
Stevie Ray Vaughn, since
Hendrix is a given. SRV was
absolutely amazing and
mesmerizing.

And while on the 3-name kick,
one of the best guys out there
right now is Kenny Wayne
Shepherd. Obviously he?s not
one of the all time greats,
but for a young kid, he?s
pretty f?n awesome.

Maybe I'm just a mark for
white, blues guitarists :)
But I certainly think those
two guys hold their own with
anybody.

Welcome to the wonderful world of pervertedness, bro! And glad you can give ol' Lindsey his due; the man is a spectacular player but often gets overlooked because he plays in a "pop" band.

Hey, HordeKing - I think you finally found something I can agree with you on! Knopfler is another finger-picking god! What a shame Chet Atkins passed away a few months back and nobody even noticed. He and Knopfler made some beautiful music together.

I'd like to make a case fo0r Brian May. I feel he is often overlooked in these type of polls. If you listen to Queen, you cannot deny his talent. I think the reason he is so underrated is that he has a very controlled style of play as opposed to say a Hendrix or a Vaughn who are essentially madmen. Queen is absolutely one of the greatest bands ever and Brian May was a huge reason why.

Why is it people seem to think that to be a "great" guitarist they need to be loud and fast? With the exception of like Clapton and Zappa, everyone else named just hammer away on their guitars like there was no tomorrow. Sometimes a little subtlety goes a LONG way...

I think too many people on this board lash out about things just to prove how non-conforming they are. Anyway, here's my 2 cents, and I'm not going out on a limb with any of these, they're just my opinion:

1. Hendrix...every guitar list should begin & end with him.
2. Eddie...the god of ten fingers & six strings.
3. SRV...saved electric blues.
4. Randy Rhoads...we'll never know how great he was.
5. Brian May...created some of the most memorable licks of all time.

Best and most underrated simultaneously is Frank Zappa. The man was a monster on the guitar, and spawned Steve Vai and countless other great musicians. But to watch FZ jam was to watch excellence live. On record, you simply cannot beat jams such as Return of the Son of Shut Up N' Play Yer Guitar Some More, Rat Tomago, Watermellon in Easter Hay, Toad-O Riff, Apostrophe, Inca Roads, and Yo Mama.

Before you laugh, you must buy the album Sheik Yerbutti. If, after a few listens you haven't been converted, there is something very, very wrong with you.

Oh my God, did somebody say Kurt Cobain? That is laughable. I have seen 2nd year guitar students learn all his songs by EAR. And yeah yeah, of course all the mainstream artists like Hendrix and Clapton were covered, only because of popularity of their names.

Here are my top 5 favorite guitar players:

Steve Vai
John Petrucci
Nuno Bettencourt
Paul Gilbert
Joe Satiani

Fact is, Vai is one of the best all around musicians. He not only plays the guitar but composes 99% of his own material. And its not any crap pop rock 4/4 song, that's for damn sure.

Steve Vai is God.

Like I've said before, the "best" guitarist is more than just technical expertise for me. Guys like Yngwie are certainly knowledgeable about the fretboard of the guitar, but like Mojo said, they leave me cold.

To me, the "best" is someone who is imaginative and moves me in some way, and always seems to play the exact right part at the right time.

Some of my all time favorites are Keith Richards, Angus Young, Jimmy Page, Mark Knopfler, Lindsey Buckingham, Willie Nelson, Ry Cooder, Mike Campbell (from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), and on and on.

If you haven't done this yet,try it. Get the DVD of Monterey Pop,discover what "state of the art rock guitar" sounded like before Jimi took the stage. No one ever moved the bar so high.

Having said that James Burton,Clarence White, David Lindley and Chet Atkins are on my "names you haven't mentioned" list.

YES. AC/DC usually get their props, but for some reason, Angus seems to be missing from the "Guitar Gods" club, and that ain't right. And NICE call with Willie Nelson...everyone gives him his due as a songwriter, but always seem to miss how talented he really is as a guitarist...same goes for Mike Campbell. Everyone just gives Petty all the credit...

Lindsay Buckingham is another great guitar player that I overlooked before.
That guy can play things that no other guitarist can play. He's terribly underrated because most people assume his guitar parts are overdubbed (he actually plays those counterpoints by himself AT ONE TIME!) or they just assume it's a keyboard.

Lindsay is the shit! Good call to whoever said his name before.

only for his solos, and his intro's is morello noteworthy. his verses and choruses are very simple. but he plays his guitar like a set of turntables while hitting notes. Morello is good, but i'd love to hear him do an instrumental, to decide if he's great.

Tom Morello IS amazing. His rhythms and grooves kick all kinds of ass but, I do agree that he his kinda gimmicky. His musicality is really strong. He doesn't NEED to use all that squeaking, beeping, and pitch shifting as a crutch...but he does. He tends to overuse it.

Oh, and he also needs to stop "scratching" on guitar. It's really dated. And as long as I'm making demands: Justin Timberlake needs to stop "beatbox-ing".

Yeah, I always liked
his VERY loose way of playing. Some people (Usually guitarists) say
he's sloppy, but thats actually what I like about him. Adds a wild,
untamed sound to his playing. Its also what I always liked about Vernon
Ried from Living Color. And ACDC live. It gets so wild it sounds like
its on the verge of collapsing. That element of being on the edge of
self destruction is very Rock and Roll. Slash plays that way too.
If I attempted to list every guitar player who has moved me or influenced me this post would last for days. To list a few from different categories, however, it would go something like this:

BLUES - B.B. King, Albert King, Stevie Ray, Ry Cooder

COUNTRY - Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash

ROCK - Lindsey Buckingham, Malcolm and Angus Young, Jimmy Page, Mark Knopfler, and of course the man who literally personifies rock guitar, Keith Richards.
