It was in the NY Daily News today that Cold Mountain author, Charles Frazier, was at the premiere and he was happy with the film. That is a good sign.
I wonder if Michael Crichton ever felt that way?

I find historical films to be the most frustrating genre, usually because respect for history get subjugated to either a Hollywood insistance on popular appeal, or filmmaker's agenda. Nevertheless, if a historical fiction is faithful to a primary theme of the historical understanging of the subject matter, then I can accept and enjoy the movie. "Ride With the Devil" is a good example of a movie about conflicting loyalites of individuals in the Civil War, without the usual patronizing black-and-white portrait of whole groups of characters, like "The Patriot."
The good sign about this one is that the director, Anthony Minghella, knows how to make a good epic film, "The English Patient," which I loved. So I'm not ready to write off this movie.
So far the early reviews at Rotten Tomatoes are more bad than good - the current "Tomatometer Reading" is 33%, but the reviewers on there aren't the ones I generally trust. I'm still undecided on whether I want to see this.
