View Full Version : The Early 90's & The Rise Of The Fruit Snack

Fruit snacks hit it big in the early-mid 90's. There was a new one coming out every other week. It was a time when we said goodbye to the traditional pouch of fruit snacks and said hello to a whole new generation of cancerous children's food products. Here's some classics:
1) Fruit By The Foot
2) Gushers
3) Sharks (remember how exciting it was to get the Great White?)
And there was that one that came on a cardboard rectangle, and it was shaped to form pictures, and you peeled it off the paper. I can't rememeber the name.

I love the America's Choice ones from A&P. 99 cents a box on sale, and not bad flavor.
I never had the more expensive ones as a kid. We was Po.

Funny, we called my gay uncle a Fruit Snack right after he come out, oddly enough, in the early 90's!

Have you noticed that now they are making them for a lot of different stuff, i.e. movies, cartoons, but they all look the same? They all seem to be just a vaguely humanoid shape. Kids seem to still be able to identify them though, which makes me think maybe fruit snacks have passed me by.

You're kidding, right?
The three that you mention are totally newschool. The first one I remember is fruit roll-ups, but I'm sure that there were fruit snacks before that.
I don't think "early-mid 90's" items really belong in the oldschool forum.

There were. I remember in the 70s my Mom would by us these fruit-roll up type snacks. I can't remember their exact name but I remember they pre-dated the Fruit Roll-Up brand.

I was just thinking the same thing. Those listed are still available in stores. I remember Fruit Roll Ups from the mid 80's. I also remember Fruit Wrinkles and Fun Fruits from the 80's.

Hell, I used to have fruit roll ups in grammar school, so we're talking late 70's to early 80's.
I prefer the trail mix type of fruit snacks. Banana chips, chunks of pinapple and papaya, etc. None of this chemically created stuff.
Although I have developed a taste for Gummi Life Savers...

Once they start playing music from that time on classic rock stations, you can put shit from that era in this forum.
And 1990 is a lot further away than you think.

Yea I remember those fruit snacks from the 70's - they were way sweeter than the ones today, had a consistency that wasnt quite as smooth, and came on this cellophane that had this odd, almost paper like feel to it.

im addicted to sharkbites, gushers are good but sharkbits got the vitamin C so i invest in them. Lately ive been goign through 4 boxes a week. Its really quite sad. I eat them with a weird ritual. I seperate them by color. then I eat one of each color. I take the purples and oranges out and eat them last cause i dont like them as much as the red yellow and white. I NEVER mix the colors in my mouth, for some reason that seems wrong.
