I've been looking around to upgrade my cell, lately it's been flatlining batteries too quickly, and its an older phone (little over 2 years old). I got it originally because it has IR which I use with my Palm Pilot and notebook to go get email when the need arises.

I've been looking at the newer Samsung phones. Anyone have any experience with these phones? Do they work good or suck? There's a few Sony Ericsson phones that I'm thinking about too.

I'll probably pick up a new phone after the holidays.

First you need to decide which phone company, then you can look at phones. For good phone info, check out howardforums.com and phonescoop.com.

I'm probably sticking with Cingular. I was looking for information as to whether the company itself seems to make good phones. My old Nokia 2610 (lovingly referred to as "The Brick") took a 10 ft. fall with only a dent in the plastic, but the sound quality wasn't all that good. My current Nokia works OK, but I was wondering how good Samsung and Sony Ericsson phones are.

I'll take a look at the sites, though.

oops... The Brick was actually a 2160...

My suggestion, don't do what I did and get a cell with a cord.

Take this into consideration....

AT&T Wireless Leads in Complaints
(Reuters) - AT&T Wireless Services Inc. has had the most complaints in the cell phone industry from customers trying to switch their cell phone numbers to and from its service, the Federal Communications Commission said on Tuesday. In fact, more than half of 600 complaints it got by Monday from customers having problems switching their service under new rules that let them take their phone number to a new provider concerned AT&T Wireless, the regulator said. it's probably some hack comics bit, but how come we can go on the internet, take pictures, etc... yet i can't make a phone call in certain areas of my bedroom.

then again, i've read that europe is 5 yrs ahead of us in cell technology. we have 5/6 different variations of service providing whereas europe has 1/2. the technology is so new for us that word-to-mouth in your area is probably the best means for choosing a service.

I'd recommend the Motorola MPx200 or Sony Ericsson P800.

But if your sticking with Cingular get the Handspring Treo 600

You think europe is ahead of us, you should check the crazy shit going on in Japan.

And Samsungs have good sound quality. My dad just got one. I've never used Erriccsson, can't say. Motorola depends on the model. I had the v60 and have the T720 now. The v60 had better sound quality. The T720 can be too low some times.

I like the Nimbus 2000. They work best. Especially if you're the seeker.

I have a Nokia 6200: it's small, it's color, it synchronizes with my PC (ok, you need to buy a cable, but the software is free from Nokia), and you can play Java games on it.

The battery lasts 2-3 days, depending on use. I recommend it. I have ATT service, and they're better than I thought they'd be. I used to have Nextel, and the coverage was lackluster.

I have a motorola T720, like the rest of the world. It works great, sounds great, but is built like a piece of crap. I'm actually on my fourth one in a year. Thank god verizon keeps replacing them for free for me.

Got my new phone- A Samsung S307, and its pretty compact.

<IMG SRC="http://www.samsungusa.com/images/prod/product03/b2c_l_sgh_s307.jpg">

I paid a couple of visits to the local Cingular outlet near me, and when I finally got to talk to someone, I cut to the chase about what I wanted, which she narrowed down to two phones- a Nokia and this one. The Nokia one was bigger than my last phone, and I wasn't going to buy something bigger so I settled on the Samsung. Works pretty damn good, just gotta get a headset for it, as the place was out of them.

Thanks for the input, everyone.
