View Full Version : Funny Women on SNL

Ok, the Maya Rudolph thread made me wonder this. I can't think of a woman who is funnier than the guys, personally, but I can think of funny women on SNL.
Currently, I like Amy Poehler and Tina Fey.
Gilda Radner was a genius. Laraine Newman and Jane Curtain were brilliant. Julia Sweeny was funny.

I always thought that Sheri Oteri was kind of funny. But she's no Mary Gross.

Jane Curtain was boring, I didn't like her. Tina Fey's probably the funiest of the women. But let's face it, Ron's right; women just aren't funny.

I read somewhere that Belushi didnt think women were funny, and even these three didnt change his mind. He disliked being associated with them in any skits, because he thought they brought it down. Personally, I think as a general rule it's true that women arent very funny, but SNL has a long history of disproving that theory.

I think all of the women on there right now are better than the men. The show has always been sort of a helmut party though, which is one reason why the women on the show stood out - there were so few of them!
Loved Gilda (of course) and Jane and Lauraine. Some other favorites from the last 10 years include Jan Hooks, Rachel Dratch, Julia Sweeny, Ellen Cleghorn, Ana Gasteyer, Molly Shannon, Nora Dunn and of course Chris Kattan - she was excellent!

SNL seems to have a long-running theory that women have to be shrill, loud and screaming to be in skits. SNL tends to take women who are funny (Amy Poehler, Rachael Dratch) and put them in horribly unfunny situations.
Sheri O'Terri was just awful. Period.

I agree. I think Laura Keitlinger is a very funny person, but she didn't last long because she wasn't funny on the show.

Jane Curtain was boring, I didn't like her.
Jane was always the straight woman, so she played the "boring" one often.
Molly Shannon
KOP, you're off my X-Mas list.

Best routine I ever saw was point-counterpoint with Dan Akroyd and Jane Curtain
"Jane you Ignorant Slut" she made it funny, Akroyd would have bombed by himself.

Bowie, Md.: Berkeley, I'm so glad you're back!; I've really missed The Far Side all these years.
Berkeley Breathed: Yes, thank you, but I don't draw Far Side. I draw Calvin and Hobbes.

Janene Garafolo was a member for a couple shows, right?
She was funny. She killed on Larry Sanders; killed in Bye Bye Love. Killed in Cable Guy.
But it seems that was all a variation on a single theme.
She was funny in those; but I saw some stand up on Comedy Central? Wow it was bad, and I can understand using notes onstage [carlin even has them] but it's almost like she's reading to you. As opposed to Carlin who might have the notes but could probably do 6 hours off the top of his head.
And she, like many others, stunk on SNL. Out of the element, I guess.

Janine is an ok actress and an awful stand-up comedian. I liked her on the Ben Stiller Show (out this week on dvd)

I haven't seen the show in 2 or 3 years, at least, so I can't comment on the latest crop o' chickies.
Back in the day, Curtin and Radner were funny.
And, uh, oh yeah, I almost forgot, the show is not as funny as it used to be.

I can't believe this thread lasted this long. Ellen Cleghorn? Come on, guys. SNL in general has gone down hill and sometimes the skits are so bad you wonder which ones were cut from the script. The show used to attract the hottest stars of the day and you'd get at least five or six skits that were hilarious. Now, they're bringing in Al Sharpton and other hosts who add nothing to the show. And is it me or do all of Darryl Hammond's impressions sound exactly the same?

I don't think of Molly Shannon ever. There's a reason her career disappeared after snl.
Now, they're bringing in Al Sharpton
And if it took Sharpton to bring back Tracy Morgan for an ep, then I'm all for it. Brian Fellows was hil-arious. He loves the ladies.

Very funny. And hot! But her talent was wasted on SNL. What little of her I saw on that show - not funny.
