MARSH HARBOUR, Bahamas (AP) - R&B singer and actress Aaliyah died Saturday along with seven others when a small plane that was to carry them back to the United States crashed after takeoff in the Bahamas, authorities said.
The 22-year-old artist was among nine on board the twin-engine Cessna and had come to the Bahamas to shoot a music video, officials said. One critically injured survivor was flown to Florida for treatment, authorities said.
``We find it devastating and most unfortunate that after having this world-famous star Aaliyah and her crew select the Bahamas as their choice location for her latest video, the project has climaxed on such a tragic note,'' said Minister of Tourism Tommy Turnquest, who happened to be visiting Abaco Island, where the plane went down.
Aaliyah, of Detroit, was to begin shooting the video for ``Rock The Boat'' this month in Miami, according to her Web site. It was not clear whether she filmed that video while in the Bahamas.
The singer was born Aaliyah Haughton on January 16, 1979 in New York. She began performing at the young age of 11 when she sang on stage with Gladys Knight's troupe in Las Vegas. Her first album, ``Age Ain't Nothing But A Number,'' came out when she was 15 years old. She has collaborated with R&B singer R. Kelly, who produced her debut album and wrote many of the songs that appeared on it.
By age 18, Aaliyah had two hit records to her name.
Aaliyah's song ``Try Again'' earned her a Grammy nomination this year for best female R&B vocalist. She made her feature acting debut in the film ``Romeo Must Die.'' She also had signed on to appear in two sequels to the high-tech thriller ``The Matrix.''
``She was like one of my daughters, she was one of the sweetest girls in the world,'' said Grammy-winning producer, arranger and composer Quincy Jones. ``She vacationed with me and my family together in Fiji. I loved her and respected her and I am absolutely devastated.''
Police at the crash site said they could not confirm the identities of those on board until relatives had been notified.
The private plane was leaving the Marsh Harbour airport on a trip to Opa-locka, Fla. when it went down Saturday evening, said police spokesman Marvin Dames. Marsh Harbour is located about 100 miles north of Nassau.
After the crash, the mangled twin-engine plane rested about 75 yards from the end of the runway in a marshy area. Workers carried away badly burned bodies and laid them nearby. Pieces of the plane were strewn about the crash site.
Abaco Island Chief Councilor Silbert Mills said those killed included two women and six men. He said he happened to be at the airport and saw the plane taxi out. The next thing he knew, the plane was on the ground. He said he helped rescue the injured.
``I pulled one from the aircraft, and he was screaming,'' Mills said. ``He said he was in a lot of pain.''
The cause of the crash was unclear. Kathleen Bergen, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration (news - web sites) in Atlanta, said the plane was a Cessna 402 owned by Skystream, a company based in Pembroke Pines, Fla. She said the plane crashed at the end of the airport's runway at 6:50 p.m. Yahoo! News

She may have already filmed her parts for Matrix Reloaded. She's also Akasha in Queen of the Damned.

Officials Probe Crash That Killed Singer Aaliyah
MARSH HARBOUR, Bahamas (Reuters) - Authorities in the Bahamas investigated the crumpled, mud-spattered wreckage of a small Cessna plane on Sunday for clues into what caused a crash that killed U.S. singer and actress Aaliyah and eight others on a Florida-bound charter flight.
``The investigation is ongoing,'' said an officer in the police department at Marsh Harbour, the small town on the Abacos islands where the plane crashed on Saturday evening.
The twin-engined propeller plane crashed into swampy scrub and burst into flames just 200 feet from the runway at Marsh Harbour airport shortly after taking off for Miami.
Police said the plane had apparently experienced engine failure as it took off, but it was not yet known what caused that.
The 22-year-old R&B star, whose full name was Aaliyah Haughton, was on her way back to the United States after completing filming of a music video in the Abacos, in the northern Bahamas about 170 miles east of South Florida. The nine people killed in the crash were all U.S. citizens.
A statement issued through PMK, the singer's public relations firm, said: ``Aaliyah's family is devastated at the loss of their loving daughter and sister. Their hearts go out to those families who also lost their loved ones in this tragic accident.'' Yahoo! News

Queen was in the can and no reshoots are needed. Seems she didn't film any of her Matrix scenes, so they just need to recast.

It does kinda suck for her and her family, but the biggest tragedy is that Jennifer Lopez and Destiny's Child weren't on the plane instead.

Expert: Aaliyah Plane Was Overloaded
NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) - Bahamian aviation officials released an estimate Thursday of the weight of the plane that crashed in clear skies last week, killing the singer Aaliyah and eight others, and an independent expert said the figures indicate it was overloaded.
When it crashed shortly after takeoff on Saturday, the estimated weight of the plane, luggage and fuel was about 5,495 pounds, not including the nine adult occupants, the Civil Aviation Department said in a statement.
Investigators declined to say whether the plane was overweight at takeoff, but an independent expert on the Cessna 402B and other models said it was.
``No question about it, they were overloaded,'' said John Frank of the Cessna Pilots Association, a group based in Santa Maria, Calif., that is not affiliated with the plane's manufacturer.
The maximum authorized takeoff weight for the Cessna 402B is 6,300 pounds, but the plane and its seats alone account for at least 4,100 pounds. That would allow for an additional 2,200 pounds to include bags, fuel and passengers.
Aaliyah's plane was carrying about 574 pounds of baggage and an estimated 804 pounds of fuel, investigators said. That would allow for slightly more than 800 pounds for the combined weight of the nine adults. Officials were still working to determine the weight of those board.
Both of the twin-engine Cessna's engines appear to have been working at the time of the crash, investigators said.
Frank said the pilot probably lost control due to the plane's weight.
``The heavier it gets, the more difficult it is to control the aircraft,'' he said.
Frank also said that an unbalanced load could make the plane harder to control. Investigators said the placement of the bags inside the aircraft has not been determined.
A witness, Claude Sawyer, said he saw the plane veer left after leaving the ground and quickly disappear below the trees.
The Cessna crashed at Marsh Harbour airport, 100 miles north of Nassau on Abaco Island, killing all nine people on board. Aaliyah, the 22-year-old Grammy-nominated star, was leaving the Bahamas after a shoot for a music video.
Bahamian and U.S. investigators have removed the wreckage from the swampy land next to the runway and have been examining it inside a hangar at the airport.
The Civil Aviation Department said the ``on-scene'' phase of the investigation had been completed. It said there were no signs the plane was damaged before the crash.
The plane's propellers are to be examined in detail in the United States, and aircraft maintenance records have yet to be recovered.
The investigative team, which also includes U.S. officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (news - web sites) and the National Transportation Safety Board (news - web sites), plans to travel to the FAA office in Florida for additional work.
The FAA was still trying to clarify the relationship between the apparent operator, Blackhawk International Airways, and its registered owner, Skystream, both based near Miami, said spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen.
Blackhawk officials did not return calls seeking comment. Skystream's number is unlisted.
Blackhawk was cited by the FAA four times from 1997 through 2000 for various violations, including failing to follow drug-testing rules for employees in 1999 and failing to perform proper aircraft maintenance last year, Bergen said.
The Cessna's pilot, Luis Antonio Morales Blanes, had a recent criminal record that included crack cocaine possession and theft. He had been sentenced to three years of probation on the cocaine charges 12 days before the crash.
Morales, 30, was originally from Puerto Rico and had been living in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. His body was being flown back to Puerto Rico on Thursday, said Loretta Turner, funeral director at Butler's Funeral Homes and Crematorium in Nassau, which arranged transport.
Neither Skystream nor Blackhawk had a permit to operate commercial charter flights in the Bahamas, said lead invest

Aaliyah album surges to No. 1 on pop charts
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Fans are mourning the loss of 22-year-old R&B star Aaliyah by sending sales of her latest album skyrocketing to No. 1 on the pop charts.
The album, ``Aaliyah,'' released in July, had dropped out of the top 20 for several weeks when she died in a plane crash in the Bahamas on August 25. But according to weekly statistics released on Wednesday by SoundScan, its sales jumped 400 percent in the week ending September 2 to become that week's top selling current pop album by selling an estimated 306,000 units.
The latest week's figures reflected a surge in sales from the prior week ended August 26 when the up-and-coming star's album had sold 62,000 versus 44,000 the week earlier.
Music industry officials had expected Aaliyah's death to dramatically increase album sales this past week because the prior week's sales, while higher, only included one day of sales following the fatal crash. SoundScan tracks sales from early Monday through Sunday night.
Aaliyah's album was produced by Blackground Records and distributed by Virgin Records, a unit of EMI Group Plc (news - web sites)
A spike in music sales following the death of a recording artist is not unusual, with posthumous commercial gains realized by such stars as Kurt Cobain, Notorious B.I.G. and Jerry Garcia.
Many of the people buying Aaliyah's albums had only heard of her for the first time in the past few weeks, according to retailers.
But many of her fans believed she was destined to be a huge star in both film and music.
The MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday in New York City will feature a farewell to Aaliyah, while thousands attended a memorial for her in New York City last Friday.
Weeping and applauding fans of the R&B singer marched alongside a horse-drawn carriage carrying the body of the young artist in a procession that kicked off a day-long tribute to the 22-year-old Grammy-nominated performer.
Aaliyah, whose full name was Aaliyah Haughton, was born in Brooklyn but moved to Detroit when she was 5. She began performing at an early age and by the time she was 11, she was singing in Las Vegas with the Gladys Knight troupe.
Aaliyah sold a million copies of her debut album ``Age Ain't Nothing But a Number'' in 1994, and more recently the single ''Try Again'' became a big hit.
Her film debut came opposite Chinese martial arts legend Jet Li in the hip and violent ``Romeo Must Die'' and she was set to appear in a sequel to the cult movie ``The Matrix.'' Yahoo! News

first kurt gobang and now this, =( will music ever be the same?
How can you even attempt to make a comparison between Kurdt Cobain and Aliyah!??!?!
1. Kurt wanted to die, Aliyah didn't
2. Kurt is a suicide, Aliyah is an acident
3. Kurt was a ROCK GOD, Aliyah is an overated pop artist
4. Kurt changed dramiticly changed the direction of Rock by being the Anti Rock star, and changing the sound of Rock music .... Aliyah stared in Romeo must die
5.Kurt will be remembered for generations to come... I don't think my grand kids will be singing "Try Again"
6.And when Kurt died the nation mourned... when Aliyah died, I for one was waiting for the first round of plane crash jokes (Not saying that her death wasn't tragic, but it did not have the same impact that Kurt's death did in any way shape or form)
Don't ever insult Kurt Cobain by comparing him to a bush-league artist like Aliyah.
