Every once in a while I'll hear someone in business say something like "I have Six Sigma background.." or that they have their training in Six Sigma. What the hell is Six Sigma?

Six Sigma is the way of the future - the most effective form of Total Quality Management and has to be practiced by any company wishing to thrive in the 21st century.

Sounds like a cheap imitation of ISO 9000/9002
My company (when I worked at the home office) talked about "metrics" and "workflow". It's all about trying to sound like something isn't as mundane as "how many units you turn out in a day".
Probably this six sigma thing was dreamt up by some MBA looking to make a mark, and all it sounds like is trying to work your best, which many people do anyway.

The people who make up these words need to think outside the box.

Bill from Upcounty's link and assessment are on point. Short version: this program is designed to make manufacturing processes turn out exactly the same widgets all the time. This is good for computer chips but bad for the service economy businesses that the consultants try to sell themselves to.
You have to work in a "big" corporation to truly appreciate the obscene waste of time and money these programs are (Quality, ISO 9000/9001; et al.) On the other hand, if all these consultants were unemployed a lot of Jaguar dealerships and Armani stores would also go out of biz.

Too many companies make these things required. They also require people to have certifications in their field. Just because someone can pass a test to get a few letters following their name (not necessarily college degrees, although there are some), doesn't make them more qualified than someone who doesn't have those letters, especially if they have many years of experience in the field.
I worked in television for years and some of these guys who were cert'd I would never trust with anything more important than monitoring a signal level.

I know, the company that took over mine makes about $40 billion a year and I guess they got lots and lots and lots and lots of money to have all these ISO programs, and now Six Sigma I guess.

Amen to that sister. I hate all that motivational crap. Give me the opportunity to make more money - that'll motivate me.
