I find it very strange that you can put The King of Comedy and American Psycho on that list together. I would not call American Psycho a dark comedy at all. It was funny in a sick kind of way. But I would hardly refer to it as a comedy.

You couldn't be more wrong because these two movies are quintessential "Dark" comedies. I'm not trying to be condescending but it's obvious you haven't a clue regarding this topic.

I'm not saying that any of those are straight comedies. But, obviously, dark comedies cover an extremely broad area. Everywhere I see American Psycho, it is referred to as a horror film. I would even withdraw my suggesstion of putting "Very Bad Things" in the same sentence as "King of Comedy. But Very Bad Things is more of a "comedy" than American Psycho.

Although, Desperate Living is still my favorite of the early John Waters films.

Or that there are other black comedies people liked more, or that they didn't think about it - once again, I forgot one ("Being John Malkovich") that I should have put on - I have the friggin one sheet hanging in my office.
I was going to put "Fight Club" down, and just couldn't commit to it - I loved it at the time I saw it (and I did find it funny), but for me the surprise was the movie and (just like "Sixth Sense," "Angel Heart," "Jacob's Ladder," "Se7en," or any Oliver Stone film) seeing it once was enough.

Yeah, I thought of that one instantly and just assumed that someone else had already included, so I didn't put it down. The scene where Tyler Durden is working as the pee-shy busboy had me on the floor. The first hour of that movie is hysterical.

(ahem)
Judas H. Priest and a bucket full of yeast, I'm talking about Jackie Earl Haley!!! Not the cute kid from Jerry Maguire! Be serious!, that was Jonathan Lipnicki! He's not creepy, he's adorable! Jackie Earl Haley played Kelly Leak! And Moocher in Breaking Away! He also played a high school bully on the TV series "Whiz Kids", even though he was obviously in his late twenties! I shudder to think of Jackie Earl Haley pulling up on his miniature Harley, wearing those mirrored aviator shades! The thought of touching that greasy, stringy excuse for a head of hair gives me a bumpercrop of heebie jeebies!

I went into it already knowing the twist from the book, so I just enjoyed it for the film itself, and the brilliant comedy it is. Same with "Se7en", except that it's only slightly less hilarious.

You can't tell me seriously that it wasn't meant to be a comedy. You can't honestly tell me that when they pitched this movie that they were presenting it as "serious" horror. I think it was genius! The one liners, the horror cliche's, it was a great spoof! I just think a lot of people didn't get the joke.

I'd say, for Steels arguement as to what makes a black comedy, I think some people believe that the movie either Must be a comedy to be classified, or Not be a comedy [as to its natural intent];
like, Mommy Dearest. Now did they intend to have the over-the-top scenes be funny? Not too sure. Or put it this way; once you've been through the No Wire Hangers or 'Tina, get me the Axe!...' scenes, it seems to me that Every tiny quirk was meant as a laugh, and now I see the entire movie as a laugh-fest from beginning to end.
OK; beter example. You folks mention Kubrick often, and rightly so. He puts some amazingly hilarious stuff in his films, including, of all films, 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Now I have a book about the film with about 30 pages of reviews at the time, and fan mail to Kubrick at the time. The People loved it, or Hated it. Perhaps never has a movie been simultaneously on so many 'best' and 'worst' lists.
But! Kubrick has:
-A man on a space ship staring at a sign that says something like "Zero Gravity Toilet: Read All Directions before use." And its like 13 paragraphs of techo-babble!
-A scene where one of the ape-men, after a fight, turns, looks Directly into the camera, and gives a 'get the fuck away' yell. I can't see this being accidental.
-Hal. The HAL-9000 computer has just murdered the entire crew, except Dave Bowman [Keir Dullea], when Dullea goes after Hal, his respone: "I think you may be taking things a bit too seriously. Perhaps you should take a Stress Pill and lie down." or something. Oh man, if that's not dark...
-Some note 2001 can be described as watching people eat for 3 hours. Think about it; Everyone is doing nothing but eating!
-Proto-Humans = eating.
-Guy going to moon = eating.
-Pilots and Stewardesses on same ship = eating.
-Guys on moon going to see Monolith = eating.
-Bowman and Polle on Discovery = eating
-Bowman as old man in the 'Beyond the Infinite Scene' = eating.
And why, if Kubrick was the visionary that he was, makes a movie about the year 2001 where only really White bland vanilla people exist, and women are still nothing but stewardesses?
Ditto with Hitchcock. Tough to watch a lot without thinking, 'was that meant as a joke'? I mean besides the obvious ones.
I guess what I'm saying is that some films 'evolve' into dark comedies, as opposed to, say, the Royal Tennembaum's.

Hitch always viewed PSYCHO as a perverse comedy. He thought it was the funniest thing he did.
Ditto for much of Billy Wilder's stuff - while I always loved SUNSET BLVD. I never understood until I saw it in the theatre with an audience that it was suppose to be a dark comedy - I mean, it's a movie narrated by a dead guy, and when he meets Nora Desmond, she's buring her pet monkey?! It is a riot when seen with others.
Love that movie - love both those movies.

I can't believe that no one has mentioned "Death to Smoochy".
If only it stayed that way.

The scene when the guys shoving Steve Buchemi's foot into the woodchipper with a log is classic.

Yeah Death To Smoochy is great.
I just recently saw Secretary with Maggie Gyellenhal(sp) and thought it was also very good.

Death to Smoochy
Death to Smoochy is by far the most underrated film ever
I'm seeing Very Bad Things mentioned a few times. It was definitely black, but really lacking in the comedy department. I found it to be just plain depressing. Christian Slater's best dark comedy is Heathers. Now THAT is what black comedy is all about.

What am I missing with "Death To Smoochy"?
I've watched it twice to try and figure out what I was missing and it just seemed worse each time. Robin Williams at his most annoying and probably the worst waste of an actor as good as Edward Norton EVER. Just because people say "fuck" around children doesn't mean we're watching a "dark comedy."

I'm not a fan but another two good examples of "Dark" comedies are:
"I Love You to Death"
&
"Serial Mom"

Come on! The cookie bag? Vincent Schiavelli? The ice show? You're the only person I know who saw Death to Smocchy and didn't laugh their ass off.

requiem for a dream
Don't know why this film affects me so, but just absolutely, stunningly, disgustingly, briutally, amazing. As disturbing, for me, as the opening sequence to Saving Private Ryan. I compare it to that, because I had the same feeling of emotional draining after each.

You are right about that.
I think that everyone is refering to the murder, deception, downward spiral of Robin Williams' character...
You know, the little things

I'd replace "The King of Comedy" with "Very Bad Things." No pissing on De Niro, i just think "King" just wasn't slightly humorous enough to take away the sadness egde.
