This has to be the most overrated movie EVER. I will never understand why people are so fascinated by it. I can respect it for its costume and set design, because it was indeed taking pretty impressive leaps in that category FOR ITS TIME. But other than its technical achievements, this movie flat-out SUCKS. Annoying songs, a shitty and quite basic plot, cringe-worthy dialogue, and irritating characters. I hate the Wizard of Oz.

You are obviously a crazy person.

Flying monkeys, dancing midgets and a singing scarecrow?

You could only dream to be that entertaining.

The Wizard of Oz is a treasure and a masterpiece. It can be watched by the young and the old, repeatedly and never lose its entertainment value.

I'm not a fan of many old movies, but the Wizard of Oz has to be one of my top ten favorite films of all time. Further proof to its timelessness is the fact that I walked into my kid's room the other day to check on them because they were too quiet, and found them watching this great movie without me pushing or prodding them to watch it.

It's not full of phenomonal technical effects, or huge buildings blowing up, it's not even a traditional boys' movie, but my two sons skipped 2 hours of WWF, or Yugi Oh, or whatever godawful programs they watch regularly and even asked me to buy them the DVD the next day.

It may not be your cup of tea, but whenever it's on I watch it and I even went to see the remastered rereleased version in the theatres when it came out.

B. Fantastic makeup and special effects considering everything was done by hand without the aid of a computer.
C. Timeless, classic songs people will remember long after you're dead.
D. Shitty and quite basic plot? How do you figure? Doesn't every movie have a relatively basic plot when you get pick away at the details?

Why don't you read a little about the author...you tell me if its still a basic plot.

That you do not like the movie, is fine. You laid out your reasons. They are debatable.

"The Wizard of Oz" is timeless, alluring to ALL and considered a masterpiece by any respectable film buff including myself. In a forum where you have the ability to actually appreciate fine film you would see nothing but absolute praise. The original musical scores, the brilliant color and the unconventional casting are fantastic. I'm not going to go on and on about this film because the people that don't like it are typically not the kind of people that appreciate such things.

I find it ironic that Chickenhawk would not enjoy "The Wizard of Oz" for I always pictured he would be perfect performing "If I only had a Brain".

Below I'm including a hyperlink that will begin the original MGM trailer for "The Wizard of Oz" and I implore ALL to check it out. This is not only great but introduces you a bit to the backgrounds of the stars and the actual demographic "Oz" had at that time.

I disagree. I watched it annually growing up and just lost all interest in it. I don't know if I could sit through it if I was with people who wanted to watch it.

Why don't you read a little about the author...you tell me if its still a basic plot.
That's about as valid an argument as saying you should read about Tolkien to learn the plot of Peter Jackson's Fellowship of the Ring movie. The movie Wizard is Victor Fleming's interpretation of one book. Baum wrote in an entire series of Oz books creating an entire universe.

What an awesome line! Not as a dis; I mean you're right, the only reason, good or bad, that we have movies and books with flying monkeys and cheshire cats and melting clocks, is because of some 'crazy-ass tripped-out' people who thought up stuff no one else would ever dream of.

The Economics Behind The Wizard of Oz

The movie The Wizard of Oz has become a classic, as has the book by L. Frank Baum, on which the movie is based. Few people who enjoy the story, however, are aware of its underlying meaning, in which Baum outlines his views on a monetary controversy which raged in the United States at the time the book was written. This article deals with the topics relating to monetary policy and the gold standard, as outlined in Chapters 15 and 16 of Understanding Economics .
Baum and Bimetallism
The author of The Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Baum, was involved in an important American political debate at the end of the 19th century. At the time, the United States was part of the worldwide gold standard, whereby the country's money supply was limited by the amount of gold. When a depression in the US economy in the early 1890s led to high unemployment and falling prices, the radical Free Silver Movement (the Silverites) responded by calling for the end of the gold standard. The Silverites believed that the gold standard put too many restrictions on the US government's ability to rectify the depression, since all money was redeemable for a certain amount of gold. For example, an expansion in the supply of paper money would have led to a drop in its worth relative to gold, automatically causing a drop in its supply as profit-seekers redeemed paper money for gold.

The Silverites called for the widespread use of silver coins, in addition to the gold-backed money already in circulation. This new monetary standard, called bimetallism, would have increased the American money supply and, according to its supporters, would thereby lessen the severity of America's economic downturn. On the other hand, Republicans and conservative Democrats wished to maintain America's gold standard, and argued that the bimetallist proposal would cause inflation. The battle was at its height in 1896 when the Democrats nominated William Jennings Bryan as their presidential candidate. The famous closing of Bryan's winning nomination speech reflected the passions of this monetary debate: "You shall not press down upon the brow of labour this crown of thorns, you shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold."

Oz and the Gold Standard
Baum, who sympathized with the Silverites, wrote The Wizard of Oz after the failure of Byran's crusade for silver coinage. The book's hidden story highlights the potential dangers for Americans of retaining the gold standard. While Baum's allegory is a complex one, its outlines can be quickly sketched. Dorothy, the heroine, symbolizes mid-America at its best -- honest and open-hearted. Uprooted by a tornado, she is enticed to follow a yellow brick road to the fantasy-land of Oz (an ounce of gold). The Scarecrow she meets symbolizes the Western farmer who thinks he has no brain but turns out to be more capable and intelligent than he realizes. The Tin Woodman who joins them represents the American worker whose grinding labours have left him, at least for a time, rusted and heartless. And the Cowardly Lion who tags along depicts none other than William Jennings Bryan, the leader whose lack of courage finally caused him to betray the pro-silver cause.
The group reaches the Emerald City (Washington) and, once they have donned green-tinted (money-coloured) glasses, enter the opulent Emerald Palace (the White House). After various adventures involving the Great Wizard and the Wicked Witches (who represent various pro-gold political figures), Dorothy and her friends return to Oz, where they unmask the Wizard as an imposter. Dorothy is then able to return to the security of home by clicking her silver (not ruby, as in the movie) slippers.

Seen in this light, the moral of Baum's story is that the dishonest claims of the pro-gold forces will finally be unmasked. To a large extent this predictions has proven correct. While the populists were viewed in their own day as simplistic cranks, their wariness of the gold standard, especially during economic slumps, is now supported

I didn't write that, I just found it on the Net. If you want to pump me up at Viacom recommend me to some television station we own where I can be a shooter. If your local TV station can't type 'Baum OZ gold' into Google they need their license revoked.

All I'm saying is that the Wizard of Oz is no Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang and we'll leave it at that. ( If that dude with the long nose who could smell children rang my bell today, he would get a shotgun blast to the solar-plexus.)

This was the first film I ever saw in the theatres, and I loved it then, but I have to say that fewer kids movies bore me now more than "Chitty."

Flying monkeys, dancing midgets and a singing scarecrow

Amen!

I like the part where you can see a crew member hang himself in the background :)

That was a urban myth (http://www.snopes.com/movies/films/ozsuicid.htm) (and not even the correct myth, which was a munchkin hung himself), although, in a different scene, you can see the shadow of the camera and camera man if you know where to look during a long pan.

"Oz" is terrific. It does and can work on many levels - from entertainting children, to cynical old bastards. Like "Willy Wonka," there's both a subversive quality to it, as well as a reminder of being a child. Unlike Willy Wonka, however, the lead is a female...which I'm sure means something in relation to this discussion...

That's about as valid an argument as saying you should read about Tolkien to learn the plot of Peter Jackson's Fellowship of the Ring movie. The movie Wizard is Victor Fleming's interpretation of one book. Baum wrote in an entire series of Oz books creating an entire universe.

You missed my point entirely. Baum was trying to say something politically through the Wizard of Oz. If you read up on that, you will see the plot isn't as basic as Chickenhawk assumes it to be...it has a serious social, economic and political subtext.

But now that you mention it, the point is still valid. I can learn to appreciate and understand what Tolkien was trying to say with the Lord of The Rings by reading up on the history of the author...the times he lived in...his experiences...his environment...they are all contributing factors that influence his story.

I think the Wizard of Oz is a classic and it's one for those movies that I just have to watch anytime it comes on TV. I think the line that really gets to me is when the Tinman says " Now...I know I have a heart because it's breaking."

Did you know the witches guards were chanting;"oh we loathe, the old one!" referring to the witch.

No, I didn't. Now I'm gonna have to watch it again to see if I can hear that.

maybe it's my eternal cynicism, but I haven't really been able to sit through the movie since pubescence. Not that it's not a good movie, it's just too bright for me; the colors are too rich, Dorothy is too, "Shirley Temple-ish" especially when you know she's a raging drunk in real life.

The characters are also just... for lack of a better word, corny. I would like to see a visual realisation of a darker version of the movie, hinted at in McFarlane's new action figures, but again, that's just me.

My high school did this as their musical my senior year. It may have been the funniest thing i've ever seen. My half-suburban, half-rural high school in the area of western Maryland know as Fredneck.

also:
We learned about the duality of the plot of the book when I was in school. The whole gold standard issue was part of the progressive amendments to the constitution, which were pretty successful: Direct Election of Senators, Income Tax, Women's Sufferage, and Prohbition (oops, nobody's perfect). The dollar remained tied to gold until president Nixon took it off the gold standard. blah blah blah...

The studio wanted Shirley Temple in the role.

Thanks for posting that essay so I don't have to feel like I'm the only geek who knew that history. Now I can take solace in the fact I am one of a small group of geeks who know that history.

Fun Historical Fact! William Jennings Bryant also was the prosecution lawyer in the Scopes Monkey Trial.

I'm sure my fellow geeks out there knew that as well. ;)
