As we all know, the roads are really bad today, but some of us have to venture places for whatever the reason may be. So, there I was heading north on the parkway when all of a sudden i was heading Northwest. I am skidding sideways in the middle of the parkway and as i try to correct the situation I am now headed directly across the lanes and off the road.....in my head all at once I thinking many things such as:
1)turn into or away?...which is which? 2) are there cars coming up next to me that are gonna hit into me 3) hit brakes? 4) is this the end? 5)and other things i'm sure
back to reality...I'm about to fucking either run off the road into trees/a ditch or hit a guard rail at a decent speed. Still trying, in vain, to get the brand new 2003 Ford Escape straightened out. Bam, I hit the guard rail, hard, very hard and head on. The thing I didn't realize was that these guard rails give a little and absorb some of the impact. Therefore, it really wasn't that bad. Now I gotta go check the damage. Not all that bad. There was very little damage to the body of the truck. Plastic bumber was pushed in a little and one of the fog lights is pushed back and hanging. Overall, not bad. Once I get back into the truck I realize that this all would've meant nothing if that guard rail wasn't there, I could've died or seen some serious hospital time if it wasn't for that guard rail.

skidding and slipsliding around could be fun when there is noone around. i like to take a corner a little fast and let the backend swing around a bit on the turn and then make the correction to get straight again. makes me feel like i'm in a movie's 'carchase scene'...
glad their was little damage especially for you but it still gotta suck a little bit being the vehicle is almost new. guess the airbag didn't inflate, good thing! i hear it could be like getting punched in the mush and it costs to get it back in place...

If its front wheel drive, you should excelerate and steer the car the way you want to go. If its rear wheel, dont step on gas or brake, but steer in the direction of the skid. Braking is always the worse thing to do, even though its our instict. Thats the way I learned and its always saved me. Im glad your ok! Its amazing how they make those guard rails too. If you ever look at them, youll realise they are sections, bolted together, with the overlaps in the direction of a cars usual motion. This prevents the car from catching the edge of a section and having that section tear through the car like a knife. Smart!

Funk, i have done the same thing...especially with the 4 wheel drive....this was a freak thing....I have never, ever made contact with another car or anything while driving
Since I have never been involved in anything like this, what's the deal...do I report it as an accident? do I take it to the dealership, as it is under warranty? do I tell them what actually happened or tell them that I was hit in a parking lot or something along those lines? Give me some advice that will prove the least costly.

PRACTICE IN A PARKING LOT BEFORE YOU KILL US ALL YOU MANIAC!!!
Seriously, give it gas, not brake. Glad you're back alive.
Some asshole in a van was behind me today fishtailing all over the road. I was glad they were behind me and I was suprised to see the van coming up fast on my left. Me and my friend were saying what an asshole they were after they passed us (doing about 40-45) because my Explorer is GREAT in the snow and we were just cruising along. A couple miles up we see the same van spun out against the guard rail and some fat black woman walking around, hollering, screaming, and slipping on the ice in her heels. DRIVE MORE BETTER!!!

Ive heard that if you report it to the insurance and say where it was, that you might get a bill for the guard rail repair. I could be wrong though.

Give me some advice that will prove the least costly
contact your insurance agent(if you have one) and run it by him/her. Or find out what it would cost to fix and match that against your 'deductible'. You'll know where you stand. just do it quickly.
you may want to let your insurance know right now(should have an 800#) slipping on ice may be an 'act of god' like hitting a deer is and it may fall under 'comprehensive'(i always want to say compensation)
just a few ideas...
